I had the same problem I just got tired of guessing and bought a used 318 engine from a yard and it changed the whole game I installed the engine in a single day with an oak tree and two comealongs one for pulling it out and another on a different limb for dropping the next engine in got lucky I guess now two years later about to do it again
oh yea, i will get it... i just need to get it soon... gotta convert this thing to OBD2 and drive the crap out of it... gotta make sure it can do a 16 hour road trip without issues... haha
Hey that evap is most likely the charcoal canister. Mine was sucking the charcoal up to the solenoid. The line was clogged. I ran tie wire down the line to get the charcoal out. Then I blew all the charcoal out of the container, put it back on and fixed it tell i can get a new container.
Jake Matthews the truck doesnt have egr haha. its supposed to, but there no egr ports on the exhaust or manifolds, and no ports on the intake haha. thanks for the suggestion though!
It's possible. The truck went for scrap shortly after this video. Tried to sell it cause i was moving, and the potential buyer crawled under and noticed the frame on the driver's side was rotten, so i scrapped it haha! It was a lot of work to begin making the truck right... it had the wrong trans, and a bunch of stuff wasn't right... probably one of my worse impluse buys haha :P Good to know about that hose though, hopefully others can read this comment and change it while they are in that deep. Cheers!
I was gonna say the same thing although I’ve never removed an intake manifold but I am 1000% sure I would clean it first just because I’d convince myself that it will make things go smoother and better but I’m not a mechanic but I have changed the water pump and thermostat during the process and it was a process for sure and I went ahead and changed that short hose that leaks .. I have a 96 ram 1500 and now that I think about it I’m not sure if it is a 318 or 360 they say they have the same heads but different strokes and piston size .My daily driver is a 99 Laramie 1500 318 rwd.
Make sure the cat isn't clogged, doesn't sound like it, but it's something else to check. Can be checked with a vacuum gauge, or when they're really bad by ear, exhaust from the tailpipe would be abnormally quite. Vacuum gauge would be the easiest, hold the RPM's steady at 3k ish, and you should still be pulling strong vacuum.
Is the timing adjustable on those trucks? Or is it all computer controlled? Could be off a little. I don't know the Dodges to well, more of a GM man haha.
Jeff Joy yea, 2 of them were seized in the intake, hence the bolts breaking where they did. with the intake off, they wound right out :) its not a bad job to do haha
adam farr i ended up scrapping the truck. I didnt do a careful enough once over before i bought it, and didnt notice the front drivers section of frame from the UCA forward was rotten. Would have been way too costly to replace it and out of province. I ended up selling all my cars and buying a 89 3+3 to build.
Wasnt bad. Biggest pain in the ass was the front and rear bolts breaking off haha, but it could easily be done in a day, just make sure you have all your gaskets
Pull your distributor cap look up inside and you will see the 8 electrodes are probably all White and corroded. Replace it or use a Dremel with the fine Barrel sander to gently knock the corrosion off the electrodes. Clean up the rotor button with sandpaper making sure the metal part that touches the center of the cap and the one that jumps the spark are tight where they are attached to the rotor button with the press fitted pin. It's an ionization problem and if anyone knows how to stop it I would love to know.
@@neilhuddleston8294to my knowledge they all have vent caps but you could be right. It's a small distributor cap. I'll add some more ventilation and see what happens.
I will tell u that the trans codes will make it run like shit. I know that for fact buddy hit me of if you need some Dodge ram advice I can help with it running like shit
Agreed. Fixing the plenum gasket is only half the issue. You'll need to clean out all the carbon that accumulated after driving all those years with a leaky gasket. I spent two days cleaning carbon off the piston heads. I'm also replacing both O2 sensors and the timing chain as well since it's all disassembled anyway. She's been a good one though. I have 334,000 miles on the original engine.
Brandon Swanner supposedly it was the catalytic converter... i reset the ecm, tried a whole bunch of stuff, nothing was working. Then i found out that my frame was rotten, so i ended up scrapping the truck, dude who bought it works on these trucks ALL the time. Asked if i cut the cat out. I had, and he told me that was my issue. These things need the cat and o2 sensors to run properly.
Can I get that old intake manifold off of you. I really cannot find a intake that has the two sensor holes due to me having a 95 and in 96-97 up they changed to the one sensor. And person before me put a 96 5.9 in the truck. And I need a double sensor intake. I'll pay to have u ship it if I'm not close
Sean K there isnt a EGR on this truck haha. its cobbled, but only slightly... haha. theres no exhaust port or intake port for the EGR. not sure why theres even a code for it... i was messing with it a little bit earlier this week, and started unplugging things to see if it made a difference... i unplugged the IAC and nothing happened. plugged it back in and smacked it with a screwdriver. THEN i could spin the tires on gravel. still bogging, but its 70% better. need to make another video. ive been run down to nothing these past 2 weeks... almost 120 hours between the past 2 weeks. caught up with me finally. been on the couch, sleeping for the past 2 days haha
Check your catalytic converters if theyre clogged then it will not have any power and it will cause engine running problems

You will get it. Take a break, relax, and then get back to it.

Where was the container if you remember?
LOL! Only laughing because I snapped the same exact bolt you did. Thank god the intake isnt threaded huh?
A stuck open EGR will cause very poor running and no power. Check the vacuum circuits to/from the EGR.
Jake Matthews the truck doesnt have egr haha. its supposed to, but there no egr ports on the exhaust or manifolds, and no ports on the intake haha. thanks for the suggestion though!
Those exact bolts brake on every single one of these engines. I have tested this at the scrap yards. Never had one not brake in 5 years of testing.
I can confirm that as well, the front 2 plenum bolts. I'm waiting on my heads from the machine shop and have purchased the aluminum retrofit plate.
Only bolt that broke on mine was one of the tiny 5/16 water neck bolts.
You are gonna regret not having changed that waterpump bypass hose

Have you ever herd of cleaning your working spot before tearing into your motors?

Gearheadtom its computer controlled. i just hope its not got a stretched timing chain... id be right upset haha
Sounds like you have an exaust leak shouldn't sound like that from inside the cab of the truck. And try cat cleaner see if that helps
I did that same job on my ram 2 years ago only broke 2 intake manifold bolts was able to get them out after I lifted the intake
Jeff Joy yea, 2 of them were seized in the intake, hence the bolts breaking where they did. with the intake off, they wound right out :) its not a bad job to do haha
analog56x I gota felpro gasket kit it came with all new hardware
That's why you need to use a impact with a light finger when taking off these bolts on these old motors.
Hey what did you figure out on your codes? Good work on the videos btw looking good

The bolts are 5/16×18. I used grade 8 stainless to replace mine

Damn bolt! Hahahahahahah I snapped off the one under the ac compressor too. Took all day to drill it out.
You better pull your heads and clean the cylinders. After my plenum failed i pulled huge chunks of carbon out of my cylinders.

does carboraitor give you more power than fule injection
Depends how much carb you have, vs how well the fuel injection is set up.
Barney Warwick fuel injected is better in general

What ever happen to the Cummins ?
MFB Alaska sold it. needed to pay rent on a slow month so i had to sell it. it was hurt anyways and i didnt have the money to fix it :(
