  • Watch again as Jeremy Hunt delivered a speech on Friday, 17 May, promising further tax cuts if the Conservatives win the general election.
The chancellor was expected to accuse Labour of “playground politics” over attacks on the historically-high burden being borne by households and businesses.
Speaking from London, Mr Hunt vowed that “taxes will go down under a Conservative government” and accused his shadow, Labour’s Rachel Reeves, of plotting hikes to fund the opposition party’s spending pledges.
Mr Hunt was also expected to say he will to scrap national insurance - a measure Labour has described as an unfunded £46 billion pledge.
He said the current plans are necessary to pay for the pandemic-era furlough scheme and the energy bill bailout.
It comes as Rishi Sunak’s attempts to kickstart the general election campaign have failed to move voters, a new poll has revealed.
The prime minister has claimed the UK is facing a threat of nuclear war and that the Government needs to have a government strong on defence and security.

@@woofolliesmydog8628 I never meant to deny the hardship faced by many people who don’t receive Universal Credit. In fact I was really saying the opposite as being entitled to as little as £1 of UC can entitle you to many hundreds of pounds worth of passported benefits, making such a person much better off in practice than if they received no benefit.
The commenter above talked about people earning less than £29,000 a year, but in reality the amount you can earn whilst still claiming UC varies between households with different circumstances. For instance a household with an income of £28k with disabled persons or dependent children would almost certainly receive quite a substantial top up, whereas for a single adult without disabilities the amount you can earn before this support is withdrawn is considerably lower as you receive no Work Allowance and have a lower initial entitlement.
Without intruding into your circumstances I can’t know what category you are in, but it’s certainly possible you may be entitled to some support with the cost of rent up to the amount of Local Housing Allowance, provided your savings aren’t too high (you can only claim means tested benefits if you have less than £16,000 in savings).

It’s about time the tax brackets rises by about 5-6k at each level! As people clime jobs they don’t see a benefit. The lower limit is now significantly below the living wage, this is unacceptable.

@@user-wf4hy4ub7p - was not talking in relation to millionaires, was talking about those earning less than £60k. £50k back in mid 2000’s was a good wage. Now it’s not much more than enough for a comfortable living. If living alone, it’s not fantastic.

Landlords should bear the tax burden, not hard-working British. I don't like the Cons (many are landlords benefiting from our feudal system), but am also very disappointed Labour didn't offer to lower tax in their six pledges yesterday. Hmm... can't vote against my wallet, can I? The Cons are too cunning

    • @CharlieTheSupersaurus

Council tax should essentially be an asset based tax on property owners instead of tenants, but when you have so many MPs that are slumlords with vast property portfolios they'll fight tooth and nail against it.

Scrap national insurance and raise the retirement age to 75 to help pay for it. Further cuts to the NHS and private health insurance to help pay for it. Under a Tory government taxes may be lower but other costs will be incurred, especially by the lower paid, so only the wealthiest will benefit. *unt or sunk wouldn’t actually say that bit out loud though.
