Wouldn't it be easier to just clamp a straight edge to the workpiece and use that as a guide? The method in the video essentially does the same thing, but with the added step of screwing a piece of wood to the jigsaw.
I think theres a good chance that the jigsaw could wear out the edge or cut straight through in that case. I can see why this method is better long-term since it doesnt wear out the straight edge after repeated uses.
your idea has one benefit: you can cut thicker pieces. THOUGH: it's not so immediate to place the "guide rail" at the perfect distance. It's easy, but not as immediate as this method reaches
@@marcopinchetti5872 the way I do it is by using guide blocks. Basically a pair of blocks that define the distance from the guide to the line. It's fast to set up and you can always use a metal guide like a t track if you are concerned about wear. But if you are doing a lot of them it can become time consuming in comparison to this method
Not to mention the added distance between the machine and the workpiece, allowing the blade to bend a little when it follows the grain of the wood. with the machine on the workpiece itself, the blade cannot bend that far, allowing for more precise cuts. Also, wood against wood gives more friction instead of metal against wood.
🙃🥴The irony of this video is that you need advanced power tools, like a table saw, to create a jig for making straight cuts with a jigsaw. However, if beginners had access to those advanced tools, they would likely choose to use them instead of a jigsaw for this specific task.
You could use the factory edge of a sheet of plywood to make this. That way you would not have to make any accurate cuts to make this jig. But you make a fair point. This is always the problem with these types of yt videos, "excuse me while I whip out my perfectly set up table saw to make a jig for cutting straight lines!" ;) Anyway, I will try to make this using only a jigsaw and a cordless drill
Better to use the right tool for the right job. But if you have nothing else, I guess this can work as a permanent workaround if you not planning use the jigsaw for something else. Can also just use a guide and clamp as usual instead of fixing wood to the jigsaw which you will need to remove again when using it as intended. The ideal tool will be a circular saw and will give a much more desirable finish. Jigsaw is better for odd shapes, curves and tight corners in my opinion.
Exactly, the blade always flex thus no point trying to make accurate cuts. The only benefit of this jig is we don't have to account for the width of the base when placing the straight egde
The black plastic guard that is on the bottom of the jigsaw...actually has square and parallel sides. Put a straight edge on the top of your timber and use it instead. Good brands state on them how wide they are between the edge and jigsaw edge.
Yeah, there’s no point in doing what he did if you’re running the saw against a straight edge anyway. Just back up the straight edge and run the guide along it like you said.
Circular saws wobble but the saw kerf is consistent. When used with a fence, wobble will produce a kerf wider than the blade, but it won't produce a wandering cut like a saber saw. The angle of the blade to the work does not vary in a circular saw. It varies quite a bit, and unpredictably, in a saber saw.
Изобретение на пустом месте, что если направляющую крепить немного дальше (на половину подошвы лобзика) и тогда к подошве уже не нужно ничего прикручивать

Thank You. I need to make angled cuts on a 1900mm piece of plywood. This will do the job much more accurately than trying to follow a line. In fact I can use it with a circular saw. Much better than the saw guide cutting through the centre that I tried. Straight edge is of course another piece of ply.👍👍👍
Neat idea! Thought about the same thing a few days ago, as whenever i cut, i have to work out the inconsistencies later, getting tired of it, wasting time.

can't see how this is better than running the jigsaw down the guide rail you attached with the clamps and not messing around with a bit of wood screwed to the jigsaw
Very good idea but I always have blade deflection when I use a jigsaw. Never cuts square for me and I`ve tried many high quality blades. I think you would have the same problem with this technique cutting curvy lines thru thicker stock.

It's a complete waste of time, did you see he clamped the straight piece of wood to the wood he was cutting?
