- Ridgid 12V Impact Driver, Model Number R82230 from Home Debot.
I have no affiliation with Rigid or Home Depot.
Welcome to this Product Analysis / Review / Teardown / Disassembly from the perspective of a professional Product Development Engineer. I have 10 years of experience bringing complex products to market. My goal is to explain how, how well, and how efficiently the product is designed, manufactured, and executed.
I try to focus on these main areas:
Manufacturing Processes Used
Materials Used
Assembly Processes and Labor Needed
Overall Product Design and Execution
And I will try to rate and compare all of these based on:
Quality, Function, Cost Effectiveness, Aesthetics, Ingenuity, and Synergy
I have a the AEG version of this 5 years still going strong
Great brand and the Lifetime Warranty is outstanding 👍🏻. it's to bad that the RIDGID R86211B is no longer available. Best 1/2 High Torque Wrench that was put out, TTI pulled the plug it was out shinning Milwaukee in its category at that time.
My original with clicking chuck is now 15 years old and till going strong.
You should check out the 18v line of ridgid
Added it to my list. Thanks!
Have it (duo) since 5 years. Good but three four things dislike:
1) The default 2 Ah battery doesn't have any charge level indicator. Not even on the charger.
2) Light is partly blocked by the tool.
3) As far as I know, the drill and impact driver are the only 12V tools Ridgid ever developped. So you cannot get any other tools that use the same 12V batteries.
Exctremely limiting.
4) The 12V is the same price as their 18V, so I consider the 12V to be a bit pricey.
Great break down, I got this in a two pack impact driver and drill for a discounted price about a year and a half to two years ago and for what it is it's quite handy. Granted it's a 12v so you aren't going to be doing anything "heavy duty" with it, but then again that's not what it was designed for. Overall it's been a great durable tool. It's survived at least 3 15+ foot drops one of those being more than 20 ft. It's one tough SOB and it's drill brother is equally as impressive if not more so.
Always cool to hear real world feedback... Thanks!
It's really neat having you explain the engineering behind the tools. I never knew so much was put into the engineering of a power tool.
I am a home remodeler and I carry this thing with me as a supplement to my big impact. Can use it to zip off cabinet doors, put in lock sets, that sort of thing. If I can get away using this thing all day it's much more comfortable. It fits in the tray of my tool box and I can use it for a week or so on the 2ah battery without having to charge it. Wish ridgid's 12v line saw more support, there are much better and more powerful 12v tools on the market these days. But this one is so comfortable.
The rubber overmolding on tools is really nice not just for comfort but so you can put your tools down on someone's floor or inside their brand new $500 cabinet without it scratching anything.
P.s. The drill is amazing to use in combination with another drill as a predriller for a bigger bit or with a countersink.
Great insight man; always good to hear from the professionals! Thanks for the comment!
I love this drill I have one that I beat the piss out of for about a year now and the thing still works great! It’s powerful too
Same here, I left mine out in the rain and sun in Florida for a couple days by accident, that was 4 years ago... Still going strong.
Thanks for the comment. My Ridgid experience has been very similar.
hate to be technical but this is not a drill its an impact driver.
I want this for my ridgid line but I guess it's no longer made

Great video keep it up! People love tool break downs. I’m sure you will blow up if you keep doing them. Cheers!
Thanks for the support!
a side by side of tti brands torn apart would be awesome. to see how the red, orange, green, and white step down the scale is a curiosity for sure. awesome videos.
That would be sick to see how a single company decided to water down or build up their products for the various price points.... thanks for the suggestion. I have a Milwaukee M18 in hand right now.... coming soon.
JJ Concepts Co completely sick and glad to share the thought. thanks for the reply. cant wait to see whats up ahead!
Rigid consumer tool. looks descent but the milwaukee fuel only costing another $50 bucks and it out performs the 18V version of this is a no brainer.
Hard to argue after looking inside the M18.... review coming shortly. Thanks for the comment.
Ridgid has apparently discontinued all 12 volt tools.
That is unfortunate, but they may be coming out with 18v versions that are just as small as the 12v stuff so could be a sick upgrade. Thanks for the info!
milwaukee outperforms it but they are owned by the same parent company in TTI
Yeah, I've heard good things about Milwaukee tools.
@@JJCCENG Would absolutely love to see you tear apart a M12 Fuel Impact.
Nice

Thanks!
Ep. 3 should be coming this week..
cool vid, keep them coming
I have .no interest .. correction. I did not have any interest in what goes on inside tools. Now I do. This video gives some context and insight into the how and why of the design and manufacturing. Really good information. Be safe all.
Thanks for the comment. Glad you eventually enjoyed it 😁. More to come!
#istp heaven
Hammer drill? Impact driver
Yeah I misspoke a couple times but corrected it with text at the bottom of the screen. Thanks for the feedback.
Rigid has the best warranty of any of the top manufacturers. Rigid has a limited lifetime warranty. Milwaukee, and Dewalt doesn’t. They will fix the tool, until it’s not fixable, or cost effective, then give you a new one!!!
I 100% agree. They even warrenty their batteries, which is unheard of. I have personally used their warrenty and they followed through. Thanks for the comment!
@@JJCCENG Ridgid only extends warranty on batteries that come in a tool package. Buying batteries by themselves, they only have the 3yr warranty. From what i've heard :)
@@darrenmcquade215 Did not know that..... very good to know. Thanks!
Milwaukee absolutely does cover batteries for I believe 3 years and tool for 5. A Hyundai has a way better warranty than a Honda does but I’d take the Honda any day.
@@kitchentimeinc Good to know for sure. Milwaukee M18 review coming soon!
Just got a new sub #teamridgid
Thanks! Definitely have more Rigid reviews coming soon.
Best you can get! And it's made in china.
Well, it's not made in the USA so it's a step up
Rigid tools (and a lot of the other good cheap tools) tend to be over engineered (and not over engineered in a bad way) in these ways to make up for the cheaper materials used. Like you said they use expensive strong where it matters and cheap flimsy where it doesn’t. If you go strong everywhere certain design features become less necessary although I’m sure you know this.
Very good insight... yes I have myself designed using cheaper materials but added thickness or bulk or ribbing to get the toughness back for a net result that is just as strong but less expensive.
