A New Pathway to Architect Designed Living - Ruum

- The Ruum model proudly represents a new pathway to architect designed living. Through considered partnerships with industry leading companies such as Chamberlain Architects and Fisher & Paykel, Ruum is making architectural designs accessible to more people.
Captured in a recently completed home designed by Chamberlain Architects, Ruum founder Elliot McLaren and Chamberlain director Glen Chamberlain explain what this new pathway to architect designed living represents, and how Ruum is able to maximise value for the home-owner. As Elliot explains, “having spent over 15 years in the residential building industry, I became acutely aware of a chasm in the marketplace where traditional project building will stop and one off bespoke architecture starts.” In practice this has seen Ruum partnering with Chamberlain Architects on the first series of Ruum architect designed homes - five different configurations that can only be commissioned ten times per state before they are retired.
Within this program, there exists the potential for customisation of each template to maximise the living and lifestyle benefits of Ruum’s offering. It allows home-owners a degree of customisation to their layout, whilst achieving efficiencies in the appointments and appliances throughout their home. For Glen Chamberlain, this meant that “the attention to the plan” and choosing to partner with “companies that have a passion and commitment to design” were of utmost importance in elevating this new pathway to architect designed living. The decision to align Ruum with Fisher & Paykel was therefore a logical choice, with all Ruum homes enjoying integrated Fisher & Paykel kitchens that become extensions of the main living space.
Elliot elaborates that “what is a common theme with all the partnerships that we have curated within the Ruum model is a common belief around quality” and this is nowhere more apparent than in the Ruum kitchens. Demonstrating a new path for architect designed living, Ruum allows clients to create beautiful and architectural spaces without the rigours of the traditional model.

Fisher and Paykel's All Blacks series are very practical and stylish
it helps the constraints from a planning policy are not as harsh as most places, UK for example.
Hands down the best modern architecture there is. The merge with the outdoors is so fluid. All south East asia benefited from it.
The Best in the World indeed spatial planning and permission regulations are simplified. i wish south Africa could learn and do like wise.

Anywhere in the developed world, these homes are million dollar homes. Anyone that can afford a million dollar home can also pay an Architect's fees. How is this a new model?
its a fair point however all buildings cost significant money and would be the largest cost investment of most people's lifetime. Paying fees for an architect proves very valuable considering many factors including resale value.

Concept is pre-fabricated houses where the rooms are at least in part multi-purpose and can be employed to various uses for the tenant to decide. Me: how does this look practically in terms of layout?

I feel like a standarized home is the wrong way to go... what about building for your surroundigs?
Most of the time standard affordable homes all look the same nowadays, real estate companies dont care about regional development planning. This is an approach for modular (affordable more or less) homes, i think its the way to go if you do it right
Nice if you can afford it. To have the opportunity to go this way on a budget and chose the style of house that fits your environment is key.

I love having huge picture windows and doors not just to let light in but also the UV rays that kills bacteria in our home, especially in the kitchen and T&Bs. What I am worried about is how UV rays can also be bad for your interior finishes. If there isn't any yet, what would be your solution to this dilemma?

It’s has a nice concept at it adapts (at least seems to) well into the Australian weather. The bigger problem is, how do we know the house is Australian? It looks so generic and bland, that there are some very similar done some years ago in Europe.

I can never understand this new trend of isolating the housing from the street. More and more architects are putting big fencing to the front for privacy etc ignoring some very important architectural and urban principle of engaging with context, providing eyes on the street, making it safer, friendlier and prettier with proper formal entrance. What with this obsession with privacy, isolation. Surely the architects have a few design tricks to keep front façade open to the street while maintaining certain level of privacy.
maybe if you have a family/kids you will then see the value of privacy,
@@ISCDESIGNAustralia Quite the opposite, I would prefer the street that is constantly observe by my neighbours which provides safety for my kids. Isolating street with big fences making it quite a dangerous place. It's way people always lived, because it worked. Besides that's what architects are taught in architecture schools, but they are doing quite the opposite when they get to work in the practice.
@@deniska0 Well then you are due the right to have your own opinion and build the way you wish; I can certainly tell you as an architect designing houses for 25 years that all NSW planning laws support a low fence and surveillance to front yards inline with CPTED Principles. CPTED principles focus on natural surveillance, access control, territorial reinforcement and space management to create a safe and secure environment that encourages activity, vitality and viability, enabling a greater level of security. However myself and many other architects would rather have private yards. From experience I know a great many people also love high walls at the front such as we see overseas. Me personally & my wife concur; We want a front high solid tank proof, bullet proof, Swat-team proof wall! :)
@@ISCDESIGNAustralia mate, they are spot on, good urban principles are to integrate into your surroundings and add to the spatial economy of the area, not turn your back on it. That being said, these houses look to be set up for suburban and rural areas so your point stands, no point in building right up to a boundary line if there is no urban density as context. Also this whole premise is pretty sad really, an attempt at an annuity of income for the architects, this is a business enterprise more than a design undertaking, let's not kid ourselves. It's a couple logos away from a commercial.

Great concept but I notice they didn't say any prices. These homes have gotta be expensive. Definitely moreso than the average Lennar/KB/MI/Toll Brothers garbage we have here in the US.

These are some great aussie architects and designers and these guys are unique.Id say half the builders in australia are rubbish and overpriced and build the same stupid designs again and again( of this lot 10% are just shonky) we have apartments that have structural cracks and some supposedly 40% built in the last 15 years have some structural issues.A complete failure of authorities to oversee inspections before during and after concrete pours for all slabs .Just attend a HIA of MBA awards which to me are so corrupt.10% are world class and 25%% are above par and 15 % build variations of project homes because buyers just cant stand to be given the same stock design and want to spend more to have something a little unique.
Don't come to NZ everyone here ripping people off loading up material prices.Architects here pretty fucken boring they think the more they spend more bling they add the better the home any moron within reason for enough money can produce a house half reasonable.To my way of thinking a clever architect who can produce something with good design and a quality build on a lesser budget.

Opening up to a lot of people means making it affordable. I didn't see anything about any of that which indicated affordability. Custom architects, marble islands, state of the art appliances, come on. That's accessible to more people if those people have the cash. And the large majority don't. I thought he was gonna say it's for lower budgets and affordability. Without that, this whole notion of it being open to more people is just talk.
Well, if you study mass-housing in the western world, what's out there currently already (aka; McMansions in endless suburbs) has such fittings/fixtures & materials you talk about; One unique selling point of this model is that you are working with a qualified architect whom has his/her individual ethos which in the end translates to artfully-inspired housing and you are working to your actual budget-however big or small it is. All buildings cost significant money and would be the largest cost investment of most people's lifetime. Paying fees for an architect proves very valuable considering many factors including resale value. Im an architect involved in the building industry 25+ years and can clearly conclude we are heading in the wrong direction; This model provides a real positive direction..

It's not Bespoke, if the user of the product in not a central part of the process of building. So NO this is not bespoke, these are just designs which YOU think are good, not that they are not but everyone has different taste

Its beautiful, but somewhat impersonal and demanding on whoever is going to live there, like a wrongly folded towel would be an affront, never mind walking around there with tatty underwear.
