As someone who lives in New York I can confirm that I’m pretty sure I saw him last week … and the week before … and a couple of weeks before that, although that time he was in a dress.
We always knew he was the best. But when you hear him in these shoots, you know exactly why he was the best. He understood the business waaaaaaay better than anyone else. THE BRAIN.....
Always was a big fan of The Missing Link. I liked him back in the days with the Von Erich’s in the WCCW when he was part of Skandar Akbars Devastation Inc.
Bobby the brain Heenan was super intelligent in every aspect of the wrestling game. His analysis of everything on everyone and the politics of the game is really special. The Missing Link wad a character. R.l.P. Bobby Heensn. Stop that Link. Link, Link, don't do that.
Heenan, self-admitted, was in the business for the money but was thankful he also enjoyed what he was doing. He credited Guerrilla Monsoon for saying "if you are in this business for anything other than the money you are a fool."
The missing link was used to be managed in a different way in WCCW. Gary Hart worked with guys as a mix of kayfabe wrestling manager and real business manager looking out for them & their careers. It was a different way of doing things. Similar to what Paul Ellering eventually did with the Road Warriors. But it wasn't anything that Hennan ever did or was interested in doing. The problem between him and the missing link was mostly just confusion from people working in different territories getting put together in the WWF. The other somewhat shoot manager was Harley Race with Vader. They put Harley with Vader as a sort of real-life babysitter and one who was tough enough that Vader couldn't mess with.
I wonder sometimes how John Studd's career would have looked if they had made him a face instead of a heel. Does some to much of the conflicts betwren him and Andre never develop? Maybe McMahon never tells Studd to step over the top rope? I don't know, but it would be interesting. Thanks for posting this. Heenan was SO much fun.
Studd was a face for a short period of time when he returned. Won the Royal Rumble, was a guest referee for an Andre vs. Jake Robert's match. Did a few matches as a face vs. Andre there at the end, matches were not too good because of the shape they both, especially Andre, was in then. I guess Studd was a better heel because he was never going to be Champion. Biggest thing about Studd throughout his career was taking bumps, he wasn't good at it at all. He would just slug it out mainly with whomever. I guess he was injury prone or just afraid or too big don't know. A body slam is the worst bump he ever took. Great size though and sometimes you needed that to make fueds with Andre seem more realistic. The top rope thing, if that is Andre's claim to fame then, petty, real petty. One thing about Andre was, up to and even after Wrestlemania 3, the WWF or now WWE, was terrific at keeping a close hold on Andre's deficiencies. If there was internet at that time that would have gotten out and tainted his Wrestlemania 3 match with Hogan. Instead, didn't know who would go over in that match until it occurred. Now with the internet, you can get an idea of who is hurt or hurting, leaving or staying, contract is expiring, so you get an idea of who will win a big match. Didn't have a clue then. The secrets of the business helped make the business. Sadly no more secrets, if a wrestler is going to take time off you know ahead of time.
In the 70’s and 80’s, outside of wrestling, “the missing link” was an argument against Darwin’s theory. If we evolved from primates, then where’s the species that was the link between the evolution of primates and the evolution of humans? It’s a missing link.
John Studds son used to come into my bar. He was a real nice guy so it doesn’t surprise me that his dad was a nice guy too. He tried out, did some indies work but didn’t pan out. Worked out good for him, he became a US Marshall and always had interesting stories busting some guys.
Does anyone else thing that Paul Orndorff with two extra inches in height would have been a Hogan or a Flair-level superstar? I feel like at 6'0 he was ever so slightly under-tall (not short!) for his era. He was otherwise one of the GREATEST pro wrestlers produced in the 1980s. It's really a shame that the WWF-style of a "land of giants" was the only model that persisted. Nonetheless, his run with Hogan solidified Hulks' reign after he won the title. A lot of folks consider Haku or Harley Race to be the terrifying guys... put Orndorff scared me! That intensity and that piledriver!
Bobby Heenan absolutely did not give Paul ellering enough credit. Paul ellering, I cannot imagine the road warriors without Paul ellering. And when I was a kid in the '70s I watched a wrestling match in Northern Minnesota where Paul ellering got robbed by Jesse the body Ventura 🤣🤣🤣
everyone is different I respect that. I heared Paul Bearer when managing Undertaker he would take care of things like hotels and booking for the arenas , tickets for planes and few other things. for the wrestlers.. things Heenen just mentioned he didn't want to be responsable for as he felt they could handle those things themselves.
RUclips “Patera vs Robertson” from “Wrestling At the Chase”. It’s a tough hard match that was on television. Robertson later became “The Missing Link”. He was a better character as the Link. He was a better technician as Dewey Robertson.
Studd wasxa nice guy behind the scenes but he knew how to be a heel when the camera was on he also was a big guy and a dam good wrestler for his size as for Ellering Bobby was a little hard on him he was a great manager for the Road Warriors he helped them get over and was probably the only guy that could manage them IMO
The second time Orndorff fired Heenan as his manager, and introduced Oliver Humperdinck as his new manager, was badly done. I remember watching Orndorff and German talking, and I was soaked to see that, as Orndorff was speaking, Heenan's lips were moving. And he was saying the exact same words as Orndorff!
One minute Bobby's saying "it doesn't matter how much money you're making" then a few seconds later he says "if you're in this business for any reason OTHER than money, you're a fool"
Love Heenan, but not 100% on his assessment of Paul Ellering doing absolutely nothing. Ellering was a perfect for the Road Warriors early in the early years. A lot of their success was due to him being their real manager behind the scenes. Outside of the Road Warriors, I do see where Bobby is coming from. Doesn't stand on his own as a manager in that regard.

Crush's heel turn WAS best for business, looking back. That jobber then had to explain and apologise to Jake. Warrior, who was hiding in a locker, had overheard the whole thing and some believe THIS is what caused his beef with Roberts. Yes, it was. Shango and 'Take were supposed to have a 'Master of Magic' feud but Vince nixed it. Sid still bears the scars of his fight with The Enforcer. Sherri and Liz were supposed to have a program. Dusty didn't get on with Sapphire. Virgil had a shoot boxing match with Piper. Bulldog forced Diana to take the bump at SS94. Bret and Owen had heat with him. They found him in his hotel room with Anvil, stoned, dancing around to Koko B. Wares theme. Flair's chops were the worst. Mike Shaw pitched a character to Vince called King Kong Jr. King Kong Bundy got word, and actually squared up to Shaw over it. The name got scrapped. Mr. Fuji was an accomplished sushi chef, and would cook for the BSK. Steve Borden nixed the WCW push of Raven. Sting overheard Scotty bad mouthing his promo skills and went to Bischoff. Scotty got hot and headed for ECW, and even tried to convince Page Falkinburg to go with him. The Nastys were shooters and would shoot on enhancement talent. Paul Roma sabotaged Alex Wrights big push. Things were on the up for Wright, and he was going to win the US Title. Roma, who was known to be jealous of other peoples pushes, sabotaged it. Austin blames Mero for his split lip, and subsequent stitches at KOTR96. Undertakers never won a buried alive match, HIS own personal favorite match.
I have a friend who was an enhancement talent had a Missing Link story. Money was being stolen from lockers during matches and they spray painted some money to see who took it and checked everyone and found Link had it. Gorilla Monsoon beat the piss out of him. Separate incident but Link was also later banned from that bar, I never found out why. Stay Out All Night and eventually Shabooms were the bars where a lot of local Chicago Indy wrestlers worked so the WWF guys would come there when in town, it wasnt far from O'Hare Airport. Dewey Robinson honed up to a lot of his mis deads after he kicked his drug issues. I always like Link as a kid

Met Studd once, he signed about 30 kids autographs and talked to each kid!

I remember when The Missing Link passed through the Mid South territory. As crazy as he was, and as crazy as Louisiana was, he was a baby face.
So I told him ..."leave the face paint on ...this is New York ...you'll fit right in".
