To me, he was just this awesome, cordial and friendly person that seemed to have no idea just how legendary he really was. He was just that same guy that I watched on television; nothing more, nothing less than you'd expect.
    I mentioned that I loved his WCW days (I really did, that was true) and how I thought it was just the best. Without missing a beat, He slaps me on the shoulder and says "Hey, off the record of course but it was the best, it had to be the best because everything else in that company was just so damned terrible!" Gene was a true legend though and for what it's worth, he was right but I so loved WCW. 🤣

      Lord no. Tony Schiavone? He's terrible now and always had that 'over the top used car salesman' fake hype in his voice. He was a professional, but he's not in my Top 5, not even close really.

    • @jasonlane6187
      @jasonlane6187 3 месяца назад

      @@Clubber-Slang Exactly!
      I'll never understand how people think Schiavone was ever a good announcer. He's a good announcer for baseball or for golf -- AKA, sports where the action has looooong pauses in between the action. But when it's non-stop action like wrestling, he always resorts to dumb cliches and repeats the same stuff over and over like he's doing it on auto-pilot. And that "emotion" that people perceive in his voice is FAKE AS HELL at least 75% of the time. If you watch him on AEW now he constantly says "this is so amazing" or "this is the such a great show" or "wow what an amazing match" -- OVER AND OVER AND OVER, every week.
      If EVERYTHING is so "great" and EVERYTHING is so "amazing"....then NOTHING is "great" or "amazing", Tony you idiot! It's the same principle as when he used to say at every Monday Nitro and WCW PPV that "THIS IS THE GREATEST NIGHT IN THE HISTORY OF OUR SPORT!" Ummm....if they're all "the greatest night", then NONE OF THEM are the greatest night, you dimwit! God, I always felt like he thought that the audience had the emotional IQ of a toddler. Just say "it's great" and they'll think that it's great! I felt insulted listening to him.
      But yeah, to his credit, he's definitely a professional. But that's mainly because he was an ass-kissing, brown-nosing company man. Hey, Okerlund said it himself, calling Schiavone a "politician" and that "Tony was always looking out for Tony".
      He's not anywhere near my Top 5 either.

    Okerlund was such a pro. He hard a great career in wrestling but could've easily been a national news broadcaster, or a sports host

    "Mean Gene" used the phrase "go bear hunting with a switch". I heard that phrase used to describe Larry "the Axe" Henning, in the early 70's on the old AWA shows. R.I.P. "Mean Gene", "the Brain", and "the Axe".
