Replacing Icemaker With AC DC Fridge

  • I installed our new AC/DC, Dual Voltage fridge in the cockpit of Boogaboo. removed the old AC only powered ice-maker, enlarged the opening a bit and hooked it up.
    Now we can have chilled beverages whether we're connected to shore-power or away from the dock, as the new Dometic unit automatically switches between power sources. This upgrade was a must for us, given how much cruising we do throughout the boating season.
    And remember folks, this NOT a How To video, it's 'How I Did It' 😉

    I bought two shop vac hoses so I can reach farther and hang one outside to blow the micro fiberglass dust outside.

      Actually, the burnt smell of fibreglass and wood was so bad after doing this job that I tossed the whole vac and got a new one. Only forty bucks at Walmart, so no big deal.

    Hey Paul, excellent video! Could you give me a little direction on the DC power once AC is removed? And, how you wired it as well! Thank you

    • @BoatingWithBoogaboo
      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  25 дней назад +1

      The AC (Alternating Current/shorepower) side of the equation was never removed, as that was a simple receptacle that I merely plugged the new fridge in to ( ruclips.net/video/bB7ma2FwABQ/видео.htmlsi=aX7yewkl1LIb8605&t=453 ). The DC (Direct Current/battery) was connected through a new line that I ran directly from the battery (with a simple toggle style shut off switch + inline fuse), as I discussed in the video, here; ruclips.net/video/bB7ma2FwABQ/видео.htmlsi=BWOdBGtUz60gdtRS&t=565

      @@BoatingWithBoogaboo I guess I’m drawing a blank. Pardon me if I’m being obtuse but, the cockpit fridge run on AC when on shore power out Genny. When you switch off shore power power out Genny the DC panel has a refrigerator switch which then powers both fridges on DC. Why did you run a new line to battery for DC?

    • @BoatingWithBoogaboo
      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  24 дня назад

      @ericoeks As our model was only equipped with an AC only powered ice maker in the cockpit, there had been no accommodation (power feed or switch) to supply DC power to that unit. This is why I had to run a DC power line and install a switch for it.
      That said the main DC breaker panel in the cabin in our boat DOES have have a 'Refrigerator' switch, but that is exclusively for the AC/DC galley fridge, which was factory installed on the boat. Of course, in theory, one could add another switch to that main panel if there was enough space, but that would be a more laborious job.
      If you're interested, I have an in-depth video that I took when we first took possession of the boat, which includes my poking around behind the galley fridge and talking about all the fun stuff I discovered back there. Here's the link; ruclips.net/video/v_ki1WkCezU/видео.html
      BTW, both fridges automatically switch to DC power once the shorepower is disconnected. Aaaaaaand, fun fact is that they operate on DC all the time anyway, whether connected to shorepower or not 👍

    Nice job! We pulled out our ice maker to replace it. I think the model you used will work for us. Do you remember the height you needed to put the new one in?

  • @BikeBoatandTravel
    @BikeBoatandTravel Год назад

    It seems I am faced with part of this job. One of the previous owners of our boat did the same conversion... but they only did the AC part not the DC. Did you consider trying to get the DC from the panel in the cabin?

    • @BoatingWithBoogaboo
      @BoatingWithBoogaboo  Год назад +1

      They did that because to achieve an AC connection, they merely had to plug the thing in ;-)
      As for my DC supply, I dropped a dedicated line down to the batteries (located immediately below the fridge location) and connected it that way. Of course, that line has an inline fuse, as well as a power interrupter switch in case I want to shut off that power supply.
      I'm sure you've already looked up the model/specs for the fridge you have, but be sure that the unit is in fact AC/DC compatible. I've seen enough replacement fridges that are no more than Walmart specials with AC supply only. . .

    I have the same 1998 400 Sedan Bridge you used to have. Do you think that ice maker on the stern under the stairs would just as easily swap out for this new unit you put in? Or would there not be enough room to cut out? They look like exactly the same non usable ice makers.
