This isn’t the “Meridian Logo History”, it’s actually a history of ITV South and South East - which includes Meridian as the third and final true regional franchisee.
Yeah but ITV almost broke up with the idents due to some of these idents not being seen today and some of these logos being still alive. I know that because I saw a video of ITV idents
Well done for finding the Meridian ident inserted at 22:05. I haven’t seen that version with that variant of jingle anywhere else on RUclips. Meridian started off in 1993 with an excellent ident and jingle variants. Unfortunately, with every redesign, they got worse and worse. The fizzy yellow background version has the logo displayed in incorrect proportions. The daytime jingle was better than the evening variant though. The ITV dual branded hearts idents had clever opening live action sequences, but the revolving blue hearts graphics were so horribly naff.
17:08 No Offense but what is the point of all those clock chimes on a still image with the central object reminding me of those two characters from Mario Party 6?
Brighton - Sun Twila - Moon Brighton's face is looks like a Meridian logo, but the right one is in orange. This is basically one of my favorite idents until ITV's shitty rebrand from 1999.
Anything potentially to do with Meridian, Anglia and HTV both being owned by UNM before the TV assets were bought by Granada?? Maybe UNM were more keen for the regional identity to survive before they exited the ITV system. Then again attempting to sell to Carlton first wouldn't have achieved regional identity independence either...
@@bwp70 One was made for them like all the regions, but some regions said get stuffed to it - you can see why with some of them as they are really badly designed particularly the TVS one, plus it was supposed to be Independent Television not the homogenised company that it is today, although this ident is foreshadowing of that.
Basically due to 1990 Broadcasting Act, after 1994 it was permitted for ITV franchises to buy out other franchises. By 2000, ITV in England & Wales where owned by Carlton and Granada. Then in 2004 they merged to form ITV plc. The only independent franchise is STV.
Southern was so dull and deserved to lose its contract, but when you think back to all the money the utterly incompetent IBA forced those companies to spend to win those 1982 franchises and then to be only be on air for ten years like TVS. Millions upon millions spent on studios like the one in Maidstone and like the one Central had to build in Nottingham because of demanding dual regions when all those dual regions needed were a small complex to cover their news obligations and then they had to sold off because nobody needed so many studios. And fast forward to today and nearly every ITV studio has been bulldozed to the ground. It's heartbreaking to walk down the South Bank to see LWT coming down in 2023. That complex should have remained!
I quite like the Meridian idents, but agree the actual logo is VERY of its time and subsequently has dated very badly. Whereas the TVS logo being relatively simple in design could work now, with today's styling.
Love this video. The Meridian idents were truly iconic, however your play out on the itv1 ident tunes are nice 👍❤
Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed this video 😁
