Fort Ord was my first duty station. I had a brother one year older than me. He was in the Army also one year ahead of me, he was station at Ft Polk LA, from Sept 1978 - 81. He didn't like at all their and always complained to my mom in LA, our hometown. So when I went to the Army, I made sure I went to the closest base from LA, which happened to be Ft . Ord. I just wanted to make sure that if I didn't like the Army, etc, like my brother, I could at least go home on long weekends. Turned out Ft Ord was fabulous, I enjoyed it at 18-19 years old. My age their.
I lived in Monterey for six months in late 1984, and did some work at Fort Ord while working for an architectural firm in Monterey. I used to go on base a lot of times to put together projects to repair and upgrade facilities. I remember we did one project at Stilwell Hall, which was a club and roller rink up on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. It was said that the building would eventually fall into the ocean due to erosion of land under building. I remember they had a long drinking bar in a part of building that must have been 30 feet long or more. It was my understanding the site was taken over by California State University and would become a CSU campus. I’m surprised to see so many abandoned buildings and areas on the site. I remember hearing explosives going off at night when they were doing exercises on base.
Yes Indeed I remember the bar it was long !! I saw it come down in 2003 and yes as a kid in the 70’s I remember hearing firepower all night !! The college built around it and yes, I grew up a Monterey and thank you for sharing your comment with us. I appreciate it.
I completed Basic and Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Ord prior to going to Vietnam in 1970. A few years ago I visited Fort Ord and found the barracks I stayed in during basic training. It was said to see the building with broken windows and trash strewn around in the building. The company street and grass area in front of the barracks showed years of neglect. The tree in front of the barracks has certainly grown in the last 50 years. Too bad this fort closed.

Heartbreaking to see this once beautiful Army base in this condition. I arrived here in July of 1963 for Basic and Advanced Infantry Training prior to Basic Airborne Training at Ft. Benning, GA., then on to Ft. Campbell, KY. where I served with the 101st Airborne Division -- HHC 2/506th Abn. Inf. ~ Currahee!
I attended several public meetings about what to do with Ft. Ord properties. I will describe it as squabbling. Communities with no actual borders with Ft Ord were the Elephants in the room. While smaller community of Marina and Seaside who had borders with the former Ft. One of the reasons in my mind that Ft. Ord was closed was the proposal to extend their airfield to accommodate larger troop carrying g aircraft was the victim of NIMBY syndrome. Why have quick reaction forces where they had to go my train to where the aircraft were. . . The Airfield that Ft. Ord used was only big enough for a Helicopter air field. That airfield later became a manufacturing park and a civil aviation field for light aircraft.
I attended A.I.T. there (Food Service Specialist aka/cook) and was one of two women in my class in March 1975 to May 1975 and Ft. Ord was also my permanent duty station for the next 18 months. I loved it there by the ocean. Sad to see the condition it’s in now but I still have my memories.

With all that wasted land, that would be a good place to relocate all the zombies that plague cities on west coast. They can be employed constructing living quarters giving them good skills. But that's too good an idea.
I was stationed there 1984-85. Lots of memories. It's a shame that this placed closed. A lot of history and good infrastructure that could've been put to good use. I remember the beach cleanup, having to bury dead sea lions that'd wash up on shore.
My Father was Stationed at Fort Ord for training prior to WWII. And Decades later "The Planet" was my 1st Duty assignment after AIT. So, I was the second generation to be posted there in 1984. I had a lot of fun there, re discovered my belief in GOD, had some great friends, and a lot of Sargent's over me. Eventually joined the "E-4 Maffia" (as a Specialist) prior to heading to my next unit at Ft Bliss, in Texas.
Just one more thing..I got to Ord after MP School Basic in October of 1979. I was assigned to the 7th MP Company. I later was apart of the 54th MP Company. As long as that place as been closed it could have been cleaned up and used for other means. It has been over 20 years since it has been closed. There is no excuse for allowing this place to fester for so long. There are numerous companies and individuals that have the resources to clean up that place and turn it into something nice. Ocean view property wasting away.
Only post where a private could meet famous people from every where, issuing them a visitor pass at the front gate. Sometimes you could volunteer to help with parking lot control for free passes to the races at Laguna Seca. Disgusting vandals should all be shot ! I was there 1984-1990….6th bn 80th Fa and then 5thBn, 15th FA….
I lived in Marina, just north of Ft. Ord 1992-2004. I saw the start of the decline, but these videos make me sick. What is in the minds of those sick Vandals, graffiti. I shopped the Commissary, Post Exchange. I also remember the fight between all the nearby metro area of what would be done with the properties. I also work in support of what was being used by other military🙃 commands and knew those areas. When a base or post, or fort is being close why throw-away perfectly good structures because they don't meet the perceived standards of today. How many people used them for years before and were glad to have them.
Its costed more in money to clean up Old Fort Ord than it would if they just kept it open

As if my “home base” more than half of my 20 year career. It really looks NOT like our great “Planet Ord”.
