Hey team, welcome back! Hope you enjoy this video on how to pitch your tent in snow and high winds. Please feel free to SUBSCRIBE to my channel so you get all the other helpful wild camping videos I create. All the best! Barry.
Hey, this might be a dumb question, but how do you pack the tent in the winter? Do you just stuff it back in the sack, even if the tent is damp? Any tips on this? I can't find a video that covers the subject, people always show setting it up, but not packing it back up in the winter. Thanks.
Hi Daniel. Thanks for tuning in. You ask a really good question! I was away on a longer trip last week and a couple of my fellow hikers used a microfibre cloth to wipe the outside or inside of their tent before packing it as neatly into its bag as possible. If it’s been snowing, shake off any excess snow, then wipe it down with a cloth. On a multi-day trip, where it’s been/is raining, shake and wipe down the outer, then detach the inner and pack it in a separate bag to the outer so it will remain dry. If camping again somewhere else that night, put the damp outer up first, (if possible) then the dry inner. Hope this helps.
@@wildmountainman1 YES! That is exactly what I was curious about. I am going to start winter camping this year and there is very little information on taking down the tent. Thank you!!
RobHK Vlogs thanks Rob! That means a lot to me. I trust you are recovering from your surgery, and well on the way to finishing your work in your garage. 👍🏼 You’ll also see I used your intro template, it’s awesome - thank you!
Nice tips mate. Winter camping is a new thing to me and I don’t intend going into the Scottish highlands before being armed with knowledge from people like yourself. And also dialling in my sleep system in the fields or woods within walking distance from home. I doubt it’ll be this winter anyway since I can’t seem to locate a hilleberg soulo in the country due to popular demand and hilleberg most likely having stopped production due to this pandemic. Thanks again I look forward to binging on your videos. 👍🏻
Thank you. Good to see you enjoyed my video. You’ll really like the Soulo when you finally get your hands on it. Hilleberg have had massive orders during C19, well beyond previous years and are swamped. Hopefully though once you do get your Soulo you’ll also have your sleeping system sorted and can venture out safety and have a fantastic time. Reach out to me anytime with any questions you may have. All the best. 👍🏼
@@wildmountainman1 thanks very much. I’m on the fence for the red or black label now that it’s taken so long. I have spent many nights in snow holes and tarps in the army but I want every night in all conditions to be enjoyable. As by long as hilleberg don’t ask stupid money for it I’m not all that concerned with weight. Plus it’s been 20yrs since I was sleeping in a snow hole 😂 at 42 I deserve some comforts. Watched so many of your videos this morning and found all to be well informed and straight forward chat. I may one day do a NZcamping trip my cousin lives in mata mata and claims it’s Scotland with a reliable weather forecast 😂👍🏻
Glad to see you’re enjoying my videos. 👍🏼 Yeah I think either the Black or Red Label Soulo would suit you. However the red label is pretty hardcore as is, without the need for even more reinforcement. Matamata is in the North Island of New Zealand. We are going up that way at Christmas. The South Island though is where I live and is far more picturesque and better for hiking and camping. Hopefully you can get here at some point.
Hi there. You might like to check out my video called, ‘How to WILD CAMP IN STRONG WINDS and SURVIVE!’ That will help answer you question. All the best.
@@wildmountainman1 I've just recently put money down on an Allak 2 which is due to arrive in a few weeks so super excited to get out and use that when it arrives. 👍
Hi there. Yes you want some flex in the poles and tent itself. This helps the tent move under pressure rather than cripple under the weight. All tents have their breaking point though.
Hi there. Although this potentially could happen, if you angle it away from your tent, that’ll lessen the chance of it happening. Also, as you’ll be aware, at night, snow tends to freeze so the axe will be lodged into the ground a lot more than in normal ground. Good to be aware though of safety concerns nevertheless. Happy camping.

@@wildmountainman1 I’m sure I will get there too. I’ve never camped abroad but my first will be the TMC around mont blanc. In 2022.
We did the Tour du Mont Blanc circuit two years ago, loved it! Enjoy.
Thanks we are about to camp in snow next weekend

Good video mate.
I've done one winter camp and i hope to progress and do more this winter.
Thanks Stevie for checking in. Glad you enjoyed my video. Hopefully you’ll be able to get out more over winter. I subbed to your channel. ⛺️❄️😀

Nice! You’ll love it. It’s a great investment. I really enjoy getting out in my Soulo in some fairly harsh weather.
Great info !
Thanks Michael. ⛺️👍🏼
Before I got the aluminium pegs,I was building my own ones, similar with the wood one presented by you,but made from split bambus! Super strong!
Dorin Nicolae sounds good. They’d be super light too. 👍🏼
Hey do tent bends during snowfall or can it break?
Hi there. Yes you want some flex in the poles and tent itself. This helps the tent move under pressure rather than cripple under the weight. All tents have their breaking point though.
Ice axe as a stake in strong wind looks like trouble to me, if it is ripped loose it will go flying into the tent fabric, and you inside.

@@wildmountainman1 thank you for reminding me about the snow setting overnight! I've not a lot of experience in snow (thats why I was watching)
No problem. All the best. ⛺️❄️👍🏼
Crampons buried in snow also work pretty well for securing guy lines
Good point Nick. Thanks. 😀
That tip about using the pack to secure the tent during setup is a doozy!
Aaron Schulz yes it is a good one. When it’s windy it’s good to have a few tricks up your sleeve. :)
