@@brentbechtold7352I think when most people think “Nintendo Horror Game” stuff like Eternal Darkness comes to mind. That’s an entire game that pioneered so many crazy new ideas for how horror games should scare the player, and had such a unique style with Eldritch horror rather than the typical video game horror style. Famicom Detective Club is horror-like at times, but it’s more like a crime thriller you can play due to being visual novels, rather than a full-on horror game that pushes the player to be scared through interactivity and game design. People were interested in the prospect of Nintendo doing something as weird and scary as Eternal Darkness again, so it’s just a touch disappointing knowing that it’s not that.

Famicom Detective Club was relatively big in Japan. It arguably revolutionized the genre in ways other games didn't, and it honestly feels kind of disrespectful to hear from all the "why doesn't Nintendo do anything with their old IPs?" people go "no, not like that!". Visual Novels are way bigger in Japan than North America (not saying there isnt a large fanbase for that gameplay style) and the NA gaming audience is typically more action and input focused as opposed to narrative. Not necessarily just to try and get Hi-Fi Rush, which frequently was likened to a Nintendo-esque project, under their belts if they snagged that IP. Or to realize brand new projects akin to how Shinji Mikami wanted the studio to do a variety of interesting things and raise up young talent. But because if there's any developer who could've satisfied that horror niche for Nintendo now - any team that could take a stab at something new, or finally revive Eternal Darkness - it was probably them.

The thing about this announcement that is exciting for me is Nintendo knew coming out of the gate they don't publish M Rated titles in house EVER. They've published third party M rated titles and such, but this is the first in house published M rated story, and even comparing this to the first to titles that were remade--those were each rated T, so they're making some very big statements with this announcement.
    1. Adventure Games are just as much a video game as anything else we (Nintendo) make, and we want to establish a "Nintendo" Adventure Game series.
    2. We are working with the original creator of this series who is a big name you should be familiar with if you like Nintendo games, as Yoshio Sakamoto is the original creator of Metroid, a series notably dripping with horror elements.
    3. We are giving this game more marketing than any of our previous attempts in this genre, willing to go wild with horror and cryptics, and to even allow it to be an M rated title so the devs are able to tell whatever story they want, limitations be damned.
I know Visual Novels / Adventure games aren't for everyone, but this is going to be a very important release moving forward. Something on the level of the original Ace Attorney releases for the culture surrounding Adventure games, I'd say.

Because then the reality won’t wind up nearly as disappointing. Temper expectations always, because things will never live up to the hype if you shoot for the moon with a little water pistol.
At the same time, the fact this is a new entry in a 30 years dormant franchise is really cool in and of itself. Like, as someone who is a newer Ace Attorney fan- it was very exciting for me when Great Ace Attorney and Ace Attorney Investigations got Western translations after years of being Japan exclusive. So while this isn’t the same thing exactly, having a game franchise come back after so long is REALLY cool.

The fact that it reached a larger number of people than the target audience is a huge marketing success story! The game was always going to be niche, especially with an M rating, but now awareness is increased a ton! I am not interested or a fan really, but I wasn't disappointed by the reveal... Not sure why so many people were.
Plus, I think they timed the hype cycle just right... More teases and hype would have created an impossible to satisfy expectation. By quickly revealing the mystery just a couple days later was appropriate for expectations management.
The latest Kit and Krysta video talked about how Nintendo is very aware of fan expectations and hype... And I also took that to mean they care about shielding their developers from too much fan influence/hype...

I don't think it *is* a marketing success if most of the commentary now is so overpoweringly negative. Nintendo didn't screw any pooch, I'm excited for the game and we aren't gonna get another Detective Famicom for the next 30 or so years after this because the fact the title is a VN is already a terrible selling point for some.
I'm a 07th Expansion boyo, a Nitroplus lass, but the *significant* VNs like Clannad and White Album aren't gonna make a dent because of folks' misconceptions of VNs thanks to great (but importantly not informative) titles like Ace Attorney and Doki Doki. There was no better way to kill hype faster than making something gamers don't see as games in the first place. They don't need to shield their devs now, I suppose is the benefit of all of this?

This video unfortunately shows one of Arlo's major flaws that's been slowly showing its ugly head in recent years. He tends to come across as pessimistic (unintentionally I'd like to think) when a game turns out to be not what he and many others expected. It's important to set reasonable expectations instead of immediately jumping to the conclusion that a new game will be a new IP or genre that a company rarely delves into like the survival horror genre.
I'd like to think that Nintendo would be very capable of making their own survival horror game in a similar vein to Silent Hill or Resident Evil. However, Nintendo would obviously want to put their own little twist on the traditional survival horror tropes. Nintendo has a history of incorporating dark themes into its games. Even if it's something as lighthearted as the Mario franchise. Lest we not forget that some of the deaths in Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. Mario getting sucked into a black hole and essentially exploding, drowning in poison/quicksand, and having Mario/Luigi's hand reach out for one last attempt for air while also making drowning sounds, to getting electrocuted and having Mario/Luigi's skeletons visible.
Majora's Mask is also another example of a game that's exceptionally dark for Nintendo. The most obvious asset that makes Majora's Mask dark is to ever-looming presence of the Moon slowly encroaching toward Termina to cause an apocalyptic event of epic proportions. So I don't think it's a matter of Nintendo being hesitant to create something like SH or RE, it's more so them wanting to come up with something that stands out from the crowd, something unorthodox. And we should all know by this point that Nintendo takes its time when it pertains to coming up with new features and incorporating them into older styles.
Take TLOZ: Echoes of Wisdom for example. The older style is the top-down Zelda format that fans have been waiting for a decade now with the new features being the fact we play as Zelda, the echoes created by the Tri-Rod, along with any other quirks the game will throw at players. So again, I would like to reiterate that it's important to set reasonable expectations instead of looking toward what the majority of folks want. That way, when the reveal happens, you'll either be less disappointed or more excited depending on how you look at it.

If you were intrigued by the idea of an M-rated Nintendo Horror game, why are you not interested in the M-rated Nintendo Horror game? It hasn't changed fundamentally in any way, your interest should be inspiration to maybe see what the series is about.

The complaints are expected, but I reckon the teaser image’s gritty and mature look will win a lot of horror fans over to a mystery IP revival. There’s a lot of cross-genre appeal here, and the performance of this game will no doubt be a major factor in a potential dedicated horror IP in the future

congratulations to the famicom detective club fanbase! it’s great to see a new game for a small ip, even if it’s a small number of people who are actually super fans. even if i’m not one of them, i may still pick it up and see how it is- if this was sandwiched in a direct, i think even fewer people would care. plus, it was fun to see theories! the teaser worked for what it was supposed to do, and I respect the hell out of Nintendo for letting Yoshio Sakamoto do all this. congrats, fdc fans!! 🥳🎉🎊

One thing you absolutely have to give kudos to Nintendo for, is their willingness to both come up with new crazy little ideas and revive niche IP's and then give them some proper attention. They'll give little niche products their own window of marketing and show how passionate they are about it.

Difference is that they've found a specialized developer that can take on Famicom Detective Club in the form of Mages. DK and Star Fox have both lacked consistent developers for a very long time. Retro seemed like it could be the new DK team, but they fell off the map and then returned to Metroid Prime. (I do still believe EPD Tokyo has a DK game on the way as was rumored; they were hiring for a 2D action game a few years ago, and the last time they did something of the sort was Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.) And then for Star Fox, it's bounced between developers ever since 64 even though Nintendo's still contributed resources themselves. Rare, Namco, Q-Games, and PlatinumGames all worked on the IP at some point, and none of them seem to have stuck. (Star Fox also seems to be set for a return soon, though, as leftovers referring to Star Fox elements like the Wolfen were found in Switch Sports of all games, and Nintendo was applying for new trademarks for the series around the same time that they were doing so for Princess Peach, likely for Showtime.)

Sakamoto on an M rated game, especially with how kinda dark the first two games went back on the Famicom, should have people excited enough. But I think it's also worth pointing out, as Sakamoto himself does in the video introducing them, that these are ADVENTURE games. Just like Ace Attorney and Danganronpa, both game franchises inspired by this one in some way, these are not strictly visual novels; nor do I really believe 'visual novels' should be stigmatic term or unworthy of a 50$ price tag for multiple reasons, but I digress.
These games are adventure games where you find clues, communicate with people, solve logic puzzles, and figure out a mystery. Full artwork, full voice acting, fully composed soundtrack, and quite likely a longer length considering this is a game developed on the Switch and not the Famicom. You don't sit and just read.

So you talk at the end about thinking the price for the game is too high because of how short the game is. I'm curious as to what you think about Metroid Dreads price, because it too is a short game that takes around 10 hours to finish. Obviously you're a big Metroid fan and not a FDC fan, but do you think Metroid should've been priced lower since its a shorter game? If not, what is it about these 2 games that makes you think one game deserves to be full price while the other doesn't?
