yeah, I'm sure there were metroid fans who bought the switch near launch because they knew prime 4 would be coming to it, announcing last minute that you'd actually need a different console to play it would've been an understandable choice all things considered, but they promised them they'd be able to play prime 4 on this system, so they're making sure you can.

BotW was originally announced for specifically the WiiU as well, but they didnt mind going for the dual release when push came to shove

The MvC trailer was a master class in show me don’t tell me. If they made a big build up hoopla, then to reveal a retro collection, the non-fgc would be “all that hype for a retro collection?” Instead, Max getting his brain fried as a viral moment did way more to communicate to the non-fgc crowd how special this is than anything Capcom could’ve put together.

The wildly different gameplay seen in echoes of wisdom very likely *IS* because Zelda is the protagonist this time.
Not in a "Oh she can't be a HERO, cause she's the PRINCESS" way; that's stupid.
But rather in a "She relies on a fundamentally different set of skills from Link, and represents an entirely different piece of the triforce. Of course her gameplay would be different." sort of way.

This shouldn’t really be surprising. Zelda’s a thinker, and a leader. I had personally thought that a top-down city-building/unit-management game would work well and play into Zelda’s role as a leader, but EoW is honestly not too far off from that idea, just much smaller in scale.

Given Nintendo, I wouldn't be surprised if they came up with the gameplay concept first and then decided that Zelda would be a better fit for the gameplay than Link. Nintendo is generally gameplay-first after all, and it wouldn't be the first time they chose a character to fit a gameplay concept.
For an example, Captain Toad: Nintendo came up with the idea of a puzzle-platformer where the character can't jump, then they decided that Captain Toad would fit as the protagonist because his backpack could justify being unable to jump.

    • @darcidious99

If zelda was fighting with a sword I wouldn't play it period, I don't want "female link", I want zelda. She deserves to have her own unique identity instead of just being "the girl character".
Granted I think it would have been smarter to make her a combat mage instead of a necromancer/summoner, but her gameplay impacts both puzzle progression AND combat so it's still very in line with the wielder of wisdom.
The only time I wanna see zelda fighting with proper weaponry and things is in hyrule warriors titles, and if they ever do a game where the big 3 all have their triforces swapped and zelda gets power/courage and has to be the hero instead (which would be a cool idea nintendo make that happen, and a zelda rpg with more playable races please🙏).

I seem to recall how Aonuma over the years has said something along the lines of how they wouldn't want a playable Zelda to be identical to Link or something to that effect when it comes to movesets when the topic of playable Zelda has come up. I imagine this was in the concept phase and they thought that Zelda would be a better fit than Link.

@@DJ_MaysonicIt wouldn’t necessarily be released twice. Rather, it may have a “Switch 2 enhanced” version that you get when purchasing or just downloading it for the newer system. Perhaps they may do something similar to how PS5 handles PS4 backwards compatibility. In that case, they show that a game is made for the older system, so downloading it will just give you that version. But it may also have a version for the newer system that you can download instead, receiving all the enhancements you wouldn’t have on the older system. Both versions are included in the purchase at no greater price.
A game you’ve already purchased may also get an enhanced version on the new console down the line, which you can access because you’ve already purchased it. It’s a simple and effective way to handle backwards compatibility.

I don't get how anyone look at the gameplay in the new Zelda game and think it will be dumbed down?
They showed them defeated an enemy by placing a rock, having the enemy attack the rock and get stunned then throwing the rock at the enemy, then repeating the whole process one more time just to defeat the enemy fully. That right there is already way more complicated and involved than walking up to and enemy and spamming the sword button until the enemy dies. I saw that in the trailer and was like oh wow it looks like it's a puzzle just to figure out how to even defeat basic enemies, I can already imagine the complicated stuff that you are expected to do to defeat a boss in this game.

    • @M00nlightOfficial

Also baiting flying enemies into one spot with meat to then attack with a deku baba. That’s much more interesting than jumping with Roc’s Feather and slashing. Imagine the cool stuff we can do with other echoes, like using the Redead to freeze enemies while another echo takes care of them. There are going to be some neat combos.
It’s all perfectly in line with their philosophy of multiplicative gameplay that was the basis for BotW and, to a much greater extent, TotK. Instead of giving the player a bunch of tools with limited uses, give them a few tools with a whole ton of different uses that can result in emergent behaviors when combined. It’s my favorite type of game design.

It's dumbed down in the sense that, while the process is more complicated, you generally aren't going to be putting yourself in danger.

It just feels annoying that you're going to have to use gimmicks to take down basic enemies instead of just being able to smack them with a sword. Instead now you summon monsters to smack them with a sword. When they have the same end product of smacking an enemy with a sword why does it matter? It feels dumbed down because there's literally less options for you to deal with enemies. Zelda has used a sword before, so why is she unable to do it now? It just feels like they made the game play a lot more tedious for the sake of a one-off gimmick.

Instead of being 1 on the difficulty scale, it could be a 2, if you know what I mean. It can be tough but not frustrating. Not saying that would make it better, I'm just saying that it doesn't need to be either extreme like you think.
Also, "No life counter, Unique art styles, Transformations, and Customization" alone and in regards to difficulty aren't mutually exclusive or inclusive. You can have a tough game and have any number of those. I do agree on enjoying a game despite it being very easy, I've been in that position as well. But it's always nice when they throw a bone to more experienced players. They don't need to make it specifically for me, but even a simple hard mode (which is still probably not going to be that hard) is nice. There is a point where something is so easy that it feels lacking. Kirby is fun despite most of it being pretty easy (I know about the other modes, that's besides the point), but imagine if they just made you invincible. Not (at least primarily) in the sense that she's female or that she's a princess, but in the sense that she is the aspect of Wisdom in this universe. We've actually seen gameplay styles contrasted based on different sides of the triforce before. The oracle game centered around saving and helping Din and Nayru, with Farore being an element that links the 3 games. They were adapted from the original godesses, and so in Seasons where you're saving Din there's a greater focus on combat to reflect the connection to power, and in Ages where you're saving Nayru there's a great focus on puzzle solving. Echoes seems like it was built around having a focus on wisdom much more deeply impact the core gameplay.

As someone who knows very little about Metroid lore, knowing that Sylux is actually an established character that the devs haven't done anything with yet is pretty exciting. Since he's the game's main villain (presumably), that means the writers will have the chance to flesh him out. Heck, I'd say that the fact that you don't need to play Hunters or Federation Force to know who he is is actually a good thing. Because if you didn't know he was a pre-existing character, he's still a new villain that adds an interesting spin on the Metroid formula. I mean a villain in a Metroid game that _isn't_ just some random alien monster? That's interesting! Not to mention ambitious!
I'd even say that it's commendable for the devs to pick a semi-obscure character instead of just creating a new one from scratch. One of the many things I love in fiction is when writers expand on forgotten or obscure pieces of lore. Not only is it some really nice fan service, but it shows that the creators are fans themselves and are willing to do something like that (which is another thing I like; when you can tell the new members of the dev team are huge fans themselves, and ready to dig up some obscure thing and expand upon it like a user on AO3. Instead of just throwing it in there solely for the sake of it).
Like, remember how in Super Mario Odyssey, they brought back Pauline of all characters, and revealed that she's the mayor of an entire city and is also the lead singer of a jazz band in her spare time? Or how in Pokémon ORAS, they actually explained how trading across different games works in-universe by implying that everyone's save files are parallel universes within an entire multiverse, and they demonstrate this by having some scientists create a wormhole using a device that's literally called a Link Cable? Weren't those some interesting concepts that you didn't expect, but were glad was brought up?
What I'm saying is that Sylux being the villain of Prime 4 isn't disappointing. It's the exact opposite.

If Prime 4 was a Switch 2 exclusive, I feel like the logic of "It's so we can show off the graphics of the next console" is kinda silly? Because you don't need a powerhouse console to make a beautiful game- Prime 4 releasing on the Switch, the same way Prime Remastered did, might just be an easy to appreciate beauty that displays what developers can do if they know what they're doing.
I think that's really cool. Is that gonna be less main stream? Maybe! It's hard to say. But as a Metroid fan, all I care about is the quality and care put into it. Prime 4 immediately shows us the devs are still just as capable of working around limitations as they used to be.

Important addendum to the whole "It should have been called "Legend of Link" - technically in the first game the "series title" was Hyrule Fantasy, and the subtitle was "The Legend of Zelda"
You can even see this original title on Eiji's shirt during the reveal. When the game was localized, they dropped the "Hyrule Fantasy" bit and just had "The Legend of Zelda as the title.
This is why the second game isnt called The Legend of Zelda: The Adventure of Link, but rather Zelda 2: AOL. In japan, it was a sequel to the Hyrule Fantasy: The Legend of Zelda, so it was simply called Zelda 2 to indicate it was continuation of that story.
Starting with Zelda ALTTP all reigons dropped the hyrule fantasy naming scheme because "The Legend of Zelda" was already what most regions knew it as.

I don't think I could disagree more with the idea that the Prime Remaster should have waited until now to release. The last time MP was available at all was in the Metroid Prime Trilogy release on the Wii back in 2009. A huge part of Nintendo's audience has never played a 3D Metroid game, so it only makes sense to give them a real taste of it well in advance and then leave some time for their appetites to grow for more before the new game. That being said, 2 and 3 really SHOULD get some kind of re-release before 4 comes out, because again, they were last made available 15 years ago.

Like metroid prime HD looked stupidly good, and metroid prime 4 seems pretty comparable with it looking more intense and action packed but a bit muddier texture wise. On the topic of the three Mario RPGs: I don't actually think them releasing the games so close together is...TOO bad. at least for this situation.
Two, high quality remakes of games that people held dear, and one new title in a series that people thought was dead and berried.
It helps that, fundamentally, the three games have
    -Different gameplay styles
    -Different restyles
    -Different stories
So, its not as bad as it COULD be.

It's gonna be a double hit combo announcement: now people are happy to get a M4 game. Later this year or next year people will explode when they drop the S2 trailer for the same game with the tag line "Available for switch... and available enhanced on switch 2"

The take about, "It should be the Legend of Link" is like saying that it should have been called, "Mario Country Tropical Freeze" or "Donkey Kong Odyssey" because Mario was the protagonist of the Donkey Kong arcade game. I know modern Donkey Kong is the third generation so maybe it's more like someone saying that Super Mario Bros. should have had a Peach title to be more like the Legend of Zelda or a Bowser title to be more like Donkey Kong arcade.
