My father was executive director of a division of the Office of Equal Opportunity and his office was located on the campus of FAMU in Tallahassee. Some summer days he took me to work with him and I would hang out at the stadium watching the wonderful Rattler Band rehearse. Such a treat!
Thank you TI for another great video. I have some cousins on my mother's side who graduated form HBCU's back in the day, a couple of them from Howard and one from Spellman. There were a lot of HBCU's that were founded by wealthy white persons from the Gilded Age and some were also founded by white abolitionist once the American Civil War ended.
Even before the Civil War wealthy abolitionists and churches were setting up schools in the North for Black people. But after the Fugitive Slave Act (1850) was passed; escaped slaves had to flee to Canada.
Hey Rebels! Not exactly what I'm talking about in this video. She didn't help to build anything or fund construction on campuses. And that doesn't take away from what she did. Mitchell donated money to medical students at Morehouse.
@rebels42wynn83 you don't have anything to apologize for. I just didn't want anyone to see your comment and think that she did what I'm talking about in this video. I know that some people will take a piece of information and run with it. That's all I meant. It's all good.
Yes! That story really didn't have anything to do with my topic, but I just had to mention it. I love horses and it made me sad. Thank you for watching and the compliment, Tammy.
Thank you for a very well-made and informative video. John D. Rockefeller and his wife, Laura Spelman Rockefeller, in addition to a building at Tuskegee were also generous benefactors of Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. About the Rockefellers: People yip and yap about JD Rockefeller and about monopoly, etc. But he made more money after his monopoly was broken up than before. Also, if he had not been able and willing to drive hard bargains (and invest in the infrastructure from the oil well to the tanker railcar; the price of kerosene for lighting and cooking would not have been affordable for most people. Prior to kerosene only oil lamps (tallow, veggie oil, whale blubber) and candles were available to light people's homes. Only whale oil provided a clean bright light; it was becoming scarce and expensive when kerosene was introduced. Fuel for cooking and heating was provided by coal and wood. Kerosene stoves were a big improvement in the kitchen.
This is an interesting video . I'm only previously aware of Tuskegee Institute and the millionaire money that helped fund parts of the college but not other HBCUs. It's an aspect of history that not as well-known .
It was soooooo good. I'm not planning on reviewing the episode...but I might change my mind about that. I'm almost done writing the script for the next video. It's about the character Maud Beaton, Oscar's girlfriend. I'm going to give you a video about the real-life person behind her character. It should be ready tomorrow.

Hi Crystal. Thank you for watching. Some of them were also founded by former slave owners and even fewer were founded by free black people.

MARGARET MITCHELL, author of "GONE WITH THE WIND" had secretly donated $$$$$ to some black colleges too.
