- Cathedral Valley is a remote area of Capitol Reef National Park. With a group of friends from Expedition Utah we make our way from BLM land just outside the park to see Temple Of The Moon and Temple of the Sun.
This area is prime for Overlanding trips. Beautiful desert views everywhere and enough dirt roads to keep you busy for days. Watch, enjoy and subscribe.

Excellent content! May head over here in Nov
One of my favorites routes through the desert. The views are next level!
Wow..!!! So happy to have your video found & it’s really of great help…!! Planning to do this in May end, just wanted to know from your experience and knowledge should a Toyota Highlander 2022 would be good to drive from Caineville to temple of sun and back not the whole loop..??
Yes. I would not recommend the water crossing but if you are going to come from the Caineville side and then back out you should be fine!
Did this route last week,14th, on a ADV bike and found the bentonite hills to be very slick. I went down on one turn, but absolutely love this loop. I only knew of it because of your previous videos. Thanks for sharing your routes and experiences, it does promote others to get out and explore.
Those hills can be treacherous when wet. Hope you and the bike are well. What bike do you have?
Its a heavier dual sport; KTM 690 Enduro. Keep the Motologs coming. I’m considering Behind the Reef Trail if you have any feedback. Should be near your starting point, I believe.
@@codysampson3462 Behind the Reef Trail is really cool. We did it last year: ruclips.net/video/dUC8M1NRUYI/видео.html The 690 will do great. There is only one tricky section but a bike can take such tight lines that it will be easy for you.
Been watching your adventures on RUclips. I love the fact that you are spending time with you kids. You need to get you a drone! I'm 74 and been flyin for about a year. It's been a BLAST! Headin down to Cathedral Valley in the Mornin with my honey.
Thanks Tom! I am jealous I wish I was heading to Cathedral Valley this week. I plan to add a drone to the setup working on studying for the license.
Also, could you do a trip like this in a 4wd pickup?
For sure! A pickup would have no issues on this route.
I was really enjoying that. Sucks that it's over. Thanks for the ride. I'm going to go watch some of your previous videos.
One of our favorite trips is the poison springs one, as well as the Pony Express Trail trip.
Another amazing video with beautiful scenery. Thanks.
Been to Goblin Valley and camped in the BLM land off Wild Horse Road just west of Goblin Valley. Done Cathedral Valley a few times but never done any OHV roads between them. Dying to get back down there to do this even though I was just there this past weekend although it was in our 2WD Journey 😟
It’s a stunning area. The landscape is second to none. Can’t wait to get back.
@@BackroadExploration Already thinking of trying to get back in May after I get my Bronco back to running how I want it.
I am stuck in Thailand trying to make quick arrangements to get back home to America. Between this and being on hold for hours on end, this video has been a beautiful distraction. Thanks so much for it. I hope to be back out roaming around Utah and all parts of the west/southwest as soon as I get back. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly. Don't want to wait for this pandemic to be over here in Thailand. Keep the vids coming and maybe see you on the trails.
Oh no. How long are you stuck there?
@@BackroadExploration I was able to get an earlier ticket, for this coming Friday then just heard United airlines is canceling all international flights..I might have just made the cutoff date so here's hoping! 😋 Been here 2 months and that was the plan. My 80 series Land Cruiser keeps texting me to come back and drive it. Haha.. thanks and be well.
After watching a couple of your videos I learned I don’t need a fancy Jeep or 4Runner, I can just get a crappy Durango and go everywhere you guys go!
While it wouldn’t tackle all of the trails we take, most 4x4s could. Our focus is on exploration on occasion we have to really push the vehicles but hard core trail runs is not the current focus of our trips.
This is awesome! My wife and I are planning to do the Grand circle road trip in April, can this trail be done in a stock TRD off-road 4runner? Love everyone’s rigs!
You will be fine no problem in your 4Runner!
We did the west side of the loop starting at the river crossing and went as far as the Temples. Then we went out to North. The road goes to I-70. Did it in a rented F150.
I'd like to take that north road out. I had it planned once but we never made it all the way down there.
@@BackroadExploration SUV RVing did it in his RAV4. Turns out that the road is U-shaped. We did the west side of the U. If you go via the Eastern route to I-70 there's an area with Mokie Marbles. I just love that whole area, from I-70 to the Burr Trail and from Nottam-Bullfrog Rd to Route 12.
I once camp near by and enjoy the sunrise at the temple of the sun, it is so beautiful!
It’s a very beautiful place. Id like to go back and do a few of the hikes
Beautiful work Jared! I've seen your videos of these places, and other people's videos of these places, and I never tire of seeing them. Really enjoyed the mix of content in this episode, and the drone shots were a nice touch!
Thanks! I am trying to incorporate more of the non driving content per viewers requests. How much water can the Subaru ford?
@@BackroadExploration I don't know if there's an official spec. I've successfully been through close to 2' but that would've been briefly at the deepest point in a crossing...a prolonged crossing at that depth would probably be pushing my luck without some modifications like diff breathers and relocating my ECU. I don't know if I would ever go to the point of putting a snorkel on this car as crossings of any significance are pretty rare here, though if it's more common in some of the places I want to visit, I may need to give it more serious consideration.
The 'ol 70 series was in "silent mode" departing camp. I don't recall the ol' tractor being that quiet. Such a cool rig and a shame he had to head home.
Oh, the magic of editing. Love that thing. I am hoping I can get Andrew to take me on an art panel tour sometime. He has seen a lot of them.
Another nice video of that trip. When this pandemic has passed enough to travel again I need to do this section that I missed. A panel tour could be fun to do with a small group.
Pick me! Pick me!
@@brentsmith769 In!
Hmm could I do this in my outback?
It all depends on how much water your Outback can forge. I know my Friend Donald at Softroadingthewest has done some crossing that are deeper than the Fremont river. To be sure I’d check the water forge level of the Subaru and then check the Fremont River depth. Also you could opt to not complete the loop. After you visit Cathedral Valley you could go out one of the other routes instead of the route that takes on the freemont River. That’s the only area I have concerns with otherwise the Outback will have no issues.
@@BackroadExploration makes sense, nowww what about in all seasons? Just barely got an outback, so I wanted to wear these stock tires before I bought some falken wildpeaks.
Great videos! Would you make this route solo? Will be returning to CA from Moab.
Thanks! I have done this trip Solo (one rig) Keep a careful eye on the weather when it gets wet the ground turns to Soup. As long as someone knows where you are you should be good to go. I always recommend walking the muddy creek river (the much smaller one) it is shallow but the ground can be soft. More than one person has gotten stuck crossing it. As you can see we had no issues. The second one is deeper but has a pretty solid base.
Enjoyed your videos! That looks like a fun trip.
Thanks so much for watching!
As always Jared, an excellent video. We've done this route twice now and would do it again as it's just that good. Keep em coming!!!
Great VTR Jared. Thanks for sharing.
Jared, I like your style. Your production is excellent. You deserve more subs! - Dan a new subscriber from NE Minnesota.
Dan thank you so much for watching and subscribing. I’ve always wanted to do a Canoe portage trip in Minnesota.
Just found your video and subscribed to your channel. Great video, I appreciate your explanations. I was able to do most of that route in Oct '20, but couldn't reach Temple of Moon/Sun due to extreme deep sand. I will be going back there sometime this year. Thanks for what you do!
Thanks for watching I’ve had a few people reach out about that sand. Hoping to get down later in the spring to check it out.
How long (time) is the trip from goblins to Cathedral Valley campground? 1/2 day? I'm going through the area in May... and I'm just curious ...
It’s the type of trail you can spend all day on or tackle in 5-6 hours depending on how much you want to stop to to take pictures and things like that.
@@BackroadExploration Thanks! We are doing a 4 week overland journey... From Montana- to Moab then through this area and ending in the north side of the Grand Canyon after 3 days, then Sedona, Southern Az, then Joushua tree, Death valley, Redwoods, Oregon, Idaho...and home. From mid May till June. Trying to look at different sections and be sure I don't get too far behind on one day because we have mixed the trip with hotel rooms about every 3rd or 4th day... rather than carry a camp shower and try to find water for such... We also will need to restock on food and gas...so we won't be out of civilization the whole time.
Jared, great footage as usual. I really liked the drone shots of the Fremont crossing.
Thanks! Those drone shots are awesome. I need to get one
Do you carry extra fuel?
It depends. I like to have a little extra just in case for some trips. However it is not needed on this route if you top off before heading into the dirt. Depending on which direction you come in from you can top off in Green River or Hanksville.
Love your channel man, I always look forward to your posts, I don’t know how I missed this one! I am planning on doing Cathedral Valley this weekend. Do you know if dogs are allowed?
Thanks! My understanding is they are allowed on leash and you are responsible for their waste. But i’d double check the Capitol Reef website just in case something has changed.
Interesting. The website says they are with a leash or at least it used to I’ll have to double check. Thanks for the heads up.
How does one get in on one of these group rides?
This ride was organized via ExpeditionUtah.com it’s an awesome group of people dedicated to exploring Utah. Sign up and members like myself post about upcoming trips. It’s free and an awesome community.
I signed up with expeditionutah tonight! I can't wait to get out!
And then the ranch truck and trailer probably with a load
Driven by two kids who looked barely old enough to drive
What Is that dodge and is it a proper 4x4 or just a all wheel drive we only get dodge ram trucks n Australia.
It’s a Dodge Durango. I believe the new ones are AWD but the older ones are traditional 4x4 but I’m not 100% positive. I’ve never driven one.
