    You'll know when you find a really good LCS owner, I found an older signed Jim Lee punisher comic book in the dollar bins, signed in regular pen on the front cover & on the bottom of the first page. I showed it to him and said are you sure this is $2.00?, he said "great find", "I'm not the kind of guy that will raise the price because of that." Consistently this owner has been the real deal, and he's in the 40-50 y.o. age range.

      Very lucky…I’ve had a shop owner raise $3 books to over $100 when I got to the counter and even straight up take books out of my hands while shopping because “he’s not ready to sell it yet”…like bro if you don’t want to sell it keep it off the floor mixed in with other books….and it was just a Carmen san Diego book I was going to get for my little sister. Mind you this guy was constantly crying and complaining how he doesn’t get any business & he’s struggling with his shop. Comic book industry is very weird in my opinion & I don’t feel bad for owners going out of business since they don’t want to do good business.

    There's a notorious backroom in a comic shop i went to in the 70's. There was a sign over a small archway that read ' abandon all hope ye who enter' the hallway went down through caves into a subterranean world, filled with ancient dinosaurs and huge bugs. But it did have a 50cent lot bin where there were stacks and stacks of action comics #1 and hulk 181😂❤

    There is also the Idealist. This is an LCS owner who takes a lot of pride in their business. The owner knows their customers by name, takes pride in keeping the space clean and organized. They will discuss the books with customers, in addition to the shows and movies that have been released. This owner is also involved with the local community, donating books where there may be a need or an opportunity to expose individuals to comic books.
    Customers will leave this comic shop in a better mood than when they walked in. I hope more individuals find an LCS like this, much as I did.

      Yeah there was a shop like that out in So Cal named Ryan's Comics but they got bought out by Graham Cracker Comics which I just found out is the largest LCS chain the US(13 locations). Reading the reviews online, seems people are bummed by the new owners.

      INDEED! I grew up with each type, and learned from each (what to do, and what not to do), all based on how they treat their clients, and more importantly the new kids who are starting in the hobby.
      I learned, and kept the most info from “The Old Man”… I am extremely grateful to the elders that gave me information, cheered my successes in my personal life, and was always kind.
      Those Old Men made me, what you call, The Idealist” .. I hope I can make the same difference in other collectors lives.
      This is how I run my business!
      Great video
      CHEERS!

    6. I own a comic book shop here in New Zealand as a 'kinda' silent partner with 2 other passionate guys, we take no wages from it and never will, it is run by volunteers and is a community service. We've been donated amazing collections and it runs great. I gifted the shop my eftpos/credit card machine from my art gallery. The rent goes to an elderly charity that rents us the space cheap. We love it and my business partner runs the may the 4th comic book day giveaways each year at the local library. The idea is to sell lots of comics at a cheap/fair price but not expensively so that the market grows. The 2 guys were running at a loss until i came along and changed the way they access the public with having an eftpos machine and now afterpay and i havent had to put any money in.

    There is a sixth. Thats the guy that invests a ton because the shop is his mancave and he mostly sells new comics. This shop has gaming in the back and feels like a comicbook starbucks. Unfortunately they do then to go out of business within 24 months unless they build a hugely devoted gaming community

    great vid, i instantly thought of certain shops when you described the owner. It's kind of sad though, to me the best part of visiting a shop is the interaction with the owner and discussing books, artists, writers, etc. Without that positive interaction, just order online. I would say the majority of shops are more negative, and lack the interaction. I travel all over the us, I wish that was not true, but thx to those shop owners that make it a great experience!

  • @TempleoftheDarkPartsoftheMind

    One of my fondest moments in a comic books shop when I was younger was having the owner condescendingly correct me after mispronouncing an artists name. He was the Simpsons Comic book guy archetype and I often wonder if someone on that creative team didn't encounter him before making that show.
    That being said I've encountered all types of owners and shops over the decades some are better than others. It's easy to lose your passion for something when it turns into a business. I really like working in a creative field and even enjoying working on personal stuff outside of it but I can see where people get burnt out. What I've noticed with successful business owners and creative people in general is the ability to reset and remind themselves of what they were passionate about with this work when they first started. Way to many people get stuck in the doldrums of their work.

With that being said, I don't plan on living in it full time, more for visitors and when I've been working late nights. I'll actually be spending most of my time in the stock room/office

    There’s a shop owner in Vegas that has a channel and streams almost nightly. He’s a cross between a gatekeeper and back room. He thinks “Batman was never meant for kids”, because he killed in 2 early comics. Bill Finger and DC quickly after 4 months of complaints and didn’t like it anyway. Probably Bob Kane’s take. Anyway, I told the owner he better include Wizard Of Oz because Dorothy had a body count. He wasn’t too pleased. *He’s obsessed with ZS too.* 😂😂😂😂

    I think comic shops will live and die by subscriptions. Selling coffee can help, too. Diversifying into other nerd stuff might keep you alive longer. But big money will only come from adding value to the community. Infinite ways to do it - have to test what works and see what people enjoy.

    I think graded comics hurt the comic industry

    • @Fin-gj2th
      @Fin-gj2th 2 месяца назад +1

      Especially how they effect raw comic prices for older books. It's ridiculous. In fact, I rather take my risk on a graded book than a raw book that costs about the same....

    • @Fin-gj2th
      @Fin-gj2th 2 месяца назад

      @Mike_oliver1313 not entirely, but we can see what sellers are asking for certain books in raw compared to graded and it's within the same price range on many occasions. :p

    • @richardolney2546
      @richardolney2546 2 месяца назад +3

      I think grading possibly saved the comic book & sports card industry. The big whales are who move the market, everything feeds downstream from them. They needed a service to detect restoration and fakes. Grading started with CCG(Certified Collectibles Group) in 1987, they started with stamps, coins & bills and nobody complains about that but with cards & comics it creates controversy.

    • @Fin-gj2th
      @Fin-gj2th 2 месяца назад

      @richardolney2546 excellent point! Does the stamp and coin collectors ever bark a comment? Never! I'm sure their input made the process better and they surely have their opinions. They truly understand the value it provides to the market. But for some reason, within the confides of THIS community, everything is nefarious and dubious.

    I know you had a bad experience there but Basement Comics in Salem VA has been one of the best shops I’ve been to. The owner has always treated me fairly and has a dedicated room of dollar comics and a wrestling ring in the back. He is definitely an old school shop and from your videos your opinion of graded comics seems to be a lot closer to his views now. I hope your viewers give him a chance and check the shop out if they come to the Roanoke area

    Yeah I'm not so sure about this. There are definitely real shop owners described in this, but most of the types mentioned here have too much overlap. I've collected and had weekly pulls for forever, at many many shops. I go to the LCBS at every new place I visit. I feel like maybe a third of the owners, I've met are represented here.

    Sadly what your saying is true. I’ve travelled eastern side of America. Visited many shops, pawn, used bookstores, and conventions. Between the owner and store. I rather deal with an employee. Owners must’ve had experience of buyers ripping them off. Just for someone who genuinely likes the hobby gets pre-judge. #CrackSlabs #ReadFloppy
