I drew a color diagram of all the notes. then from the top string down I would play every G and A. Then every E and F. Every B and C. Then you can figure out all the notes from frets 1-12 easily. From my background in guitar, learning all the notes on the fretboard is like learning to crawl before walking. It is boring, but it will help you in every direction you go with your guitar playing.
When I started playing guitar, memorizing every note on the fretboard was among my initial goals. This method here is awesome! What a great, simple way to understand this concept!
I have been playing without any knowledge of the actual notes for 10 years. I always just referred to the notes as numbers and had no clue what a scale was. Now I am trying to remember the notes and this strategy helped me a lot by helping me associate the numbers I already know and can easily pick out without any hesitation with the letters that have given me so much trouble trying to remember. Thank you sir, you are a saint and a scholar

I am a 44 year young man who loves music and instruments specially guitar, been listening to music for my whole life and for the first time got hold of a guitar 2 years ago. This 11 mins video was the best thing I ever watched , I know a few chords and this video explained what is what. Thank you so much, next for me is to learn how to do a chord in different location on a guitar. I am on the right track to become Ritchie Blackmore in no time. 🤘
By far the best teacher out there. I think his voice is very calming and soothing which helps big time when learning, you don't want a gruff dull voice and Steve explains in detail. I've learnt more from him in the past hour than I have with others in a week. I'll be sure to keep him as my go to guitar guy. Keep it up. Your doing a great job
Steve, your videos are excellent. I’ve been playing, self taught, for nearly 25 years and wish I knew some of these tricks when initially learning. It took me years and years of memorization and repetition and am forever a student...thank you for making these, very educational!
I have learned more about my guitar playing in the last two weeks after signing up to Steve's guitar course, then I have learned in the last six months on my other course I was studying. Steve has a way of reaching those of us who struggle with learning the guitar. Thanks Steve.
Pick a string (E A D G B E) and any note. Then just follow the A BC D EF G pattern. After the 12th fret the pattern repeats from the open note of the 1st string The next octave of any note is ALWAYS 12 steps above the fret that note is played on. On E string C is on the 8th fret (+12) and the 20th. B note is on seventh (+12) and the 19th. Easy trick.
You are the best guitar teacher out there. I've been playing for 20 years and have learned more over the last few with you than the other years combined. Thanks
You have my thanks and thumb's up. I don't care what others gotta type but for me I can tell you without looking at the dots on the fretboard that you really didn't waste your breath. Good job dear. Please carry on helping the dears who can't afford a paid master. Charity with clear conscience always refill your stock on the double and with a double. Coaching without asking for bills is a charity for sure. And, now about the grade of conscience, it looks to me that you may soon need a bigger Warehouse to stock the straight from heart blessings of the learners with holes in their pockets.
Hi Mr.Stine, Thanks for your teaching program here. I like your videos here and I spend 50% of my practice on daily basis in learning Scales in different positions across the fretboard and the rest of my time out of hours duration, I spend in learning my favourite songs as I wanna prepare myself for the parties in end of December this year. I only play acoustic guitar.

Had me giggling to myself at 5:20 when the penny dropped where you were going with this. Brilliant instructions and tutorial my man. Picking up my guitar after a 10 year absence and loving it with you as my guide!
It’s funny, I never really went out of my way to memorize all the way down the neck, but after enough years becoming familiar with the root notes of common chords, I find myself knowing it quite well. Like, it’s obvious that E is open if you know the E chord, it’s obvious that G is 3rd fret 6th string if you know the G chord, whether in the normal G shape or an E shaped power chord, you have to know F# is 2nd fret 6th string and C# is 4th fret 5th string since the E and A shaped power/barre chords respectively are the typical easy way to play them, and in right up through the higher D in the D major chord (3rd fret 2nd string). Above that I think just knowing one major scale is enough to easily fill out the top strings through 1st string 3rd fret without really having to think about it. If you’re comfortable with that area of the first 3 frets across the strings, then it seems to me that the only really important requisite is, as he emphasized, learning that there’s no B# or E#. If you know that then it’s very easy to count your way up each string, and then it’s just a matter of memorizing them.
Been playing guitar for 20 odd years, always played by ear and chords meant jack shit. Sharps and Flats just blew my mind. Consider yourself subbed, young man.
While I see this post is like 4 years old, thought I would just mention, in reference to the flats and sharps.. the way I learned it in highschool band, or at least the way I toook what was told to me, was that depending on which way you are traversing the chromatic scales is when you pronounce the note as a sharp or flat.. so if traversing from say, low E high E on the 6th (top) string of the guitar, it would be as follows: 10-E, 1-F, 2-F#, 3G, 4-G#, 5-A, 6-A#, 7-B, 8-C, 9-C#, 10-D, 11-D#, 12- E And when traversing back down from high E to Low E, then it would be: 12-E, 11-Eb, 10-D, 9-Db, 8-C, 7-B, 6-Bb, 5-A, 4-Ab, 3-G, 2-Gb, 1-F, 0-E Might be useful for someone, might not. Just how it made sense to me when learning, thought I would share. Also, it is my opinion that you have good teaching skills, for lack of a better way to say it! IF you still are, keep up the good work!
Awesome lesson. I've played for 10 years now and I watch your lessons both as methods of learning and as something just to watch to keep myself sharp. When I was learning where my notes were i had difficulty learning all of them so I broke it down to two ways. The first was memorizing the intervals between notes, more specifically that not f and c have no flat. Once I got that down, I created what I call the ACE method. Somebody has probably thought of this before myself but I figured it was easier to learn where 3 notes were than all 7 of the naturals, basically learning every other note a, c, and e, with the knowledge of where the others were relative to those 3. The only reason I picked a, c, and e is because it gives it a name that makes it easier to remember. Maybe this could help some people learn and could possibly be a way that yourself or others haven't thought of. Again, thank you for your awesome lessons!!!
Good idea! With the video and great tips from you and others, my whole pursuit of "mastering the fretboard" turned the overall concept from chess to checkers Thanks
I've watched around 10 videos and all they say is okay so u put ur finger here and here and you told us exactly where and what note it is thank you so much

I'm not a professional, but for me was easier to learn the notes on the fretboard by areas. On my bass guitar, I first learned the notes from the fifth to the eighth fret, on the third, fourth and fifth strings. So I had all the necessary notes for a simple song. I think it's one more, easy and interesting way to learn the fretboard, because you can play a simple song. Just learning and playing in the same time. This can also happen and on one string(learning and playing), but technically it will be harder/slower. This way can help and for future, when arpeggios are needed, because they are usually played on some zoene on the fretboard, not only on one string. Knowing of the geometry of the chords (major, minor) on the fretboard, the eight note (across the string and across the fret) is helpful too. Just my opinion.
A penny dropped today about all fretboard notes looking at a fretboard diagram printout. for E and A strings :- E fret 1 + A fret two = diagonal F.B.i fret 3 : G.C.se (or green chameleon) fret 5 : A.D (anno domini) fret 7 : B E (before Elvis) fret 8 + fret 10 : CuFf Dog (CF + DG) - dog wearing shirt with big cuffs fret 12 : E.A.r ( or EAaaa its in the game) For D and G strings : The above pattern starts on fret [3], after fret 12 remainder starts at the top and reaches fret 3 For B and E strings : The above pattern starts at fret [6], it reaches fret 12 and wraps to the top reaching fret 6 again Check a fretboard diagram and see if Im right.
Great video with clear instructions. The main breaker is in the "ON" position during this whole install? I'm trying to comprehend how this is not the first thing to switch to "OFF".

Thanks so much for this lesson Steve. It was great. We all sure appreciate you! You have no idea how long I've been watching & what I have learned from you....alot!
There are keys like F# and C# where you have an E#, because you can't use F as a note name in that key if you want to spell the notes correctly. In the same way, in key of Gb, you have to call the note B as Cb. But this is for people reading music who have to get used to key signatures.
When I was a kid, my dad put tape markers on the top of my guitar neck and wrote the note name on them. It worked pretty good cause I've always known them.
This man is a very good teacher - he explains in ways that make great sense
I agree 👍
He is really good!
I drew a color diagram of all the notes. then from the top string down I would play every G and A. Then every E and F. Every B and C. Then you can figure out all the notes from frets 1-12 easily. I've watched a lot of guitar tutorial videos, but to me you're one of the awesomest teachers on RUclips, Steve.
I learned a lot from you...THANK YOU.
Very useful, even for some one who doesn’t understand music
Steve, your videos are excellent. I’ve been playing, self taught, for nearly 25 years and wish I knew some of these tricks when initially learning. It took me years and years of memorization and repetition and am forever a student...thank you for making these, very educational!

At last. A teacher who is correct, patient, & allways gives me something fresh to work on.
You are born to be one of the best teacher.
I’ve been playing for 20 years and this is about the best way I’ve seen of memorizing the notes
I like the rabbit ears idea. Never thought about notes surrounding the dots like that. Great tip.
Just got my first guitar. Drummer by trade. This video really helped me understand the fretboard! Thank you
I’ve watched a lot of tutorials and this is the by far the best
Pick a string (E A D G B E) and any note. Then just follow the A BC D EF G pattern. After the 12th fret the pattern repeats from the open note of the 1st string The next octave of any note is ALWAYS 12 steps above the fret that note is played on. On E string C is on the 8th fret (+12) and the 20th. B note is on seventh (+12) and the 19th. Easy trick.
Steve's videos improved my playing 10 fold in such a short amount of time. So thankful to find these.
That was really good. I've been playing for 20 years and realize that I have been fairly ignorant of what chord I am playing sometimes
Man! Huge epiphany! And remember the word (be) because b and e have no sharps, huge help! Thank you!
Exactly the video I've been searching for! almost 5 years old and still a great video to learn notes on, especially coming from a piano. Thank you!
This helped a ton as a beginner thank you man. It’s easier seeing that actual guitar
Most useful tutorial I've ever seen on learning the notes on the fret board.
And I've watched quite a few tutorials.
You are the best guitar teacher out there. I've been playing for 20 years and have learned more over the last few with you than the other years combined. Thanks
"C"at and "D"og are separated by the 9 dot.

You make this easy to learn. Many thanks.
I really liked this approach - but did not really struggle to memorize The 6th string - the challenge for me is to memorize the others (except the 1st of course)
it's the same system for any notes though regardless of string
Best teacher ever
This video made it click thank you good sir.
Incredibly helpful to feel alittle more freedom while playing.
That's right! Keep going!
Steve
Good way of teaching. Really helpful 👌

i can't believe he did this whole video lesson without any jump cuts or edits in the dialog
Well done .very good teacher.
If we want to get technical there actually is E# and B#. They are only used to side step key signatures, when the composer wants you to play an F instead of an F#.
Best class ever, i was confused but now got it! Thanks alot !

So glad I subscribed, great video!
Awesome, this helped a lot!
A penny dropped today about all fretboard notes looking at a fretboard diagram printout.
for E and A strings :-
E fret 1 + A fret two = diagonal F.B.i
fret 3 : G.C.se (or green chameleon)
fret 5 : A.D (anno domini)
fret 7 : B E (before Elvis)
fret 8 + fret 10 : CuFf Dog (CF + DG) - dog wearing shirt with big cuffs
fret 12 : E.A.r ( or EAaaa its in the game)
For D and G strings :
The above pattern starts on fret [3], after fret 12 remainder starts at the top and reaches fret 3
For B and E strings :
The above pattern starts at fret [6], it reaches fret 12 and wraps to the top reaching fret 6 again
Check a fretboard diagram and see if Im right.
Remember everyone.. B to C and E to F are always half steps no matter where you play those notes on the fretboard!
Thanks
When he said the word BE, it made sense....I have some studying to do! I've never been so excited to study!!!
@@unclefreddieDied Never BE sharp is how I like to think of it. I know it's possible in certain notation, but general rule... NEVER BE SHARP ;)
This is so simple yet so useful ! I was so stupid not to see that , thank you !
Wow! This Dude is excellent! Makes it easy to learn great music!!! Thanks!
Thank you Gerry!
Steve
Thank YOU!! what a simple way to help memorise the notes. I love your teaching style.
Great video with clear instructions. The main breaker is in the "ON" position during this whole install? I'm trying to comprehend how this is not the first thing to switch to "OFF".
Such a perfect lesson
Thanks for the kind words, Mark! :-)

Steve, you are a fantastic teacher. Thank you very much.
Excellent.. n time saving tutorial..Steve Sir..your lessons Superb 🍒👍👍
Very powerful instruction! Thank you!
thanks a lot... guitar is much easier when learning by association
