In Swedish, the verb "grina" has two meanings depending on location. In the south it means to "to laugh" and in the north "to weep". Commonly, it just means to "to smile", "make grimaces" or "make faces".

I love how when the meaning is explained, one can trace the word to other languages where the word is used similarly to the original meaning. e.g. Swedish- smärta=pain or fån=fool.

What happens to positive words? Do they simply disappear over time?

Yep. Just fall out of fashion with the next generation of cool kids who always want to talk differently from their parents.
