I agree with the 50ml purchase if you have a growing collection. I don’t have a signature scent because I wear different fragrances daily or weekly. Moreover, I have a different rotation of fragrances in warmer months vs cooler months.

I agree with over-spraying. I work in an office and I've had supervisor pull me aside and tell me someone was complaining about my fragrance. I know that I tend to go heavy. I've been trying to make a conscious effort to tone it down at work. I want to enjoy my fragrance, but I don't want people around me not enjoying it. I also have been trying to practice restraint in buying bigger bottles. Decants is the way for me. Good points as usual. Appreciate your thoughts

Simple logic put in mathematical speak. A 10 ml decants has roughly 120 -140 sprays in it. Now take a conservative amount of sprays per wear at 4. That "tiny" decant will give you 30-35 wearings. That's roughly once every 10 days for a year, or if you are like me and have a decent collection, it will probably last way longer.
No prob with the 50 ml purchases of a few "signature" scents but everything else should be samples. It saves money and saves you from hoarding cause in essence, that's what it becomes.
    Great vid, justin

I can't thumbs up your comment fast enough! I too am moving to decants unless it's just an unusual cool looking bottle

Thanks man. I don't buy no more than 30 ml splits anymore. The last one was red tobacco. Absolutely love it. But like I said above, using the same math, 30 ml equates to 360-420 sprays. Red tobacco is nuclear, so 2 sprays is plenty. That's an average of almost 200 wearings.
I'm in Florida, so I'm not wearing it for half the year because of the extreme heat. The other half if I wear it once a week equates to using about 60 spays a year.
So logic tells me that 30 ml bottle will last almost 7 years. Let that sink in. It's crazy the amount of money people waste when u actually look at it from this perspective

I view fragrance like a nice hat/coat/tie/pair of shoes. For me, it's to accentuate or highlight my personality. It's also another reason I prefer my EDPs to EDTs. I'd much rather someone notice what I'm wearing after I walk past them, not before they see me. That way, it can open the doors to a nice "what was that scent I smelled when you walked past" conversation.

Always thinking outside the box. That’s why I watch your channel. Keeping it real, blunt and honest. Smaller bottles are always considered when I make new purchases. When I love a line however, I try and acquire the flankers I enjoy. Part of collecting I guess more over just smelling great. Certain juices do require a bit of over spray tho. Some don’t perform or project how I like. Just depends on the occasion, the fragrance and my goal for that specific event. Compliments are my least worry. I’ve gotten so many over the years they’ve become less important. I enjoy my scents and enjoy wearing them and smelling them for myself. Love these topics you bring. Thanks Justin

The 100 ml point makes a lot of sense. I try to keep my collection lean and mean. About a dozen (give or take) high quality scents. I ran into the problem where I want to upgrade my Aventus-like MB Explorer to Cedrat Boise. However I already committed to the 100ml Explorer, and it doesn't make sense to buy another perfume that fills the same role.
However there are some that I don't regret having large bottles and back ups of. Those are 10/10 and speak to me on a level beyond the scent itself.

I definitely agree with the first reason👌🏽 I own 80 fragrances in my collection, and not only have I taken a break from purchasing anymore fragrances but if I do add anything to my collection I do 50ml and less. Because that’s all I’ll need, especially because I rotate my fragrances properly. I also think this applies for people who buy back up bottles of something. Now I know people are entitled to spend their money however they like but personally I think it’s quite idiotic to stock up on Back up bottles of something that you’re not even going to run out of the original bottle. I’ve read some ridiculous comments on fragrantica and on other RUclips videos of people having three or four back up bottles of something. Ridiculous and redundant 🤦🏻‍♂️ Yeah I just think it’s pointless and dumb to stock up on back bottles. You’re throwing your money away.

Very true, I agree with you on all points. Smaller bottles make more sense for a growing collection, especially for the more expensive perfumes. I applied that concept when I got the Beau De Jour. However, when I go for an everyday scent I do prefer the 100ml. Recently I got a 100ml of Y edt from YSL, after wearing it a few times I wish I grabbed a 50 ml of the EDP. Buying flankers is a big no-no for me. The hardest was choosing between Guerlain's L 'homme ideal original, intense and extreme. After 10 minutes I went for the l' intense (50 ml) and am very happy with that choice. I used to over spray, especially with lighter fragrances (you do need 15 sprays from Bulgari MAN), but I curb myself now and limit it to 4-8 depending on perfume intensity. With Ambre Eternel it is usually 3.

Spot on about bottle size! I love 15ml sizes but know they are pretty unique! So my go to is usually 30 or at the most 50ml bottle sizes! Always find that when I ask for the smallest bottle size they have in a particular fragrance, the assistant always gives me THAT look! Oh don’t know if he can afford it? Is he trying to save money? Always feel a bit uncomfortable but genuinely have so many bottles and samples that I would never get through in 10 lifetimes 😁 and just don’t see the point in trying to explain it all and complicate matters worse! 🤷 Anyway, power to the 30ml! 😊😊 Great vid again! 👍👍

Agree 7 sprays is a good number of sprays for average/mild fragrances: 2 behind neck + 2 left arm + 2 right arm + 1 on chest area.
Mild all-rounder and Summer fragrances can certainly be sprayed more than 7 times and not overwhelm anyone, or the wearer's own nose though.
Also agreeing: one spray is almost always too little, maybe except for some truly beast mode ones, both projecting and lasting, while going to a closed space. Also if wearing two sprays the nose did feel overwhelmed, then naturally, try just one. Interlude might be a candidate for this, at least for some.

I still struggle to run through decants. 10ml decants will last FOREVER with a growing collection. The bottles look nice for sure, but if you’re sampling, I’ve found buying a 10ml decant is sufficient to last me a long time. If I REALLY love it, I’ll buy a full bottle only after the decant is gone. It was life changing one I realized that I don’t need a full bottle of everything

  • @Kenoji8

I agree with all points, but I am ESPECIALLY in agreement with not needing to buy the bigger size bottles if you have a sizeable and/or growing collection of fragrances. I used to do that when I first entered this like five years ago with cheaper bottles and I never used much of those fragrances at all. Plus, let's face it, when you start going into that high-level designer / niche territory, 100 ml bottles of the high-end stuff gets ridiculous in price, so sometimes you have to step it down to a 50 ml to save some coin.
The ONLY reasons why you would even consider buying a full-size 100-125 ml bottle are:
    1) it is the ONLY size (or option) available for the fragrance
    2) you have sampled / tested the fragrance and absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the scent AND how it performs on you
    3) you intend on wearing the fragrance pretty much daily / weekly because of its versatility or overall usage
    4) you found a "Killer Miller Thriller" of a deal on the fragrance when it is normally super super SUPER expensive (from places like Kingdom Fragrances) -- AND you (once again) have "mostly" tested the fragrance out beforehand

I agree on all 3. As usual you raise fantastic points about our community Justin. Right now in my fragrance journey I’m fighting the urge to buy any size bottle and instead go with samples/decants. I have around 50 fragrances and until I shave that down considerably I’m just adding more fragrances to sit on my shelf and get used maybe once a month.
Also I wore ADG absolu to work once and did one or two too many sprays and had a couple co-workers complain to me hah. One even said it doesn’t smell bad just a little too strong 😅 you live and you learn. Better to be subtle with your scent as opposed to too much especially at work!

I like to think that my personality and wardrobe are what is going to be noticed first. Sometimes I think about if I should try to make an impact with fragrance depending on the situation. I am a classic over sprayer not for social reasons I enjoy it and even do it home for myself. Due to being an over sprayer I typically will opt for a larger bottle if I like it and it is available especially if the price point is decent.

I have a few huge bottles. I have a 45 oz quadralobe bottle of Misouko extrait and another huge bottle of Shalimar cologne. Both are vintage and beautiful pieces as well as spectacular scents. I told somebody once I think backup bottles are dumb and got flamed lol. But yeah no need for all that.
I spray a little more because I like to have the scent on my hands too. So I do five sprays if it's not a strong fragrance around the collar (one behind each ear, back of the neck, and collarbones) and one on the front and back of each wrist. The ones on the wrist don't last that long because I wash my hands but during the first hour or so I really enjoy having them there.

Truth! I have seasonal bins of 60+ scents, and even with different scents with each morning and evening, I wear each scent at absolute most 6-7 times per season, obviously I take a few out of rotation each season for not being up to snuff and try something new, but this means even 50ml bottles of my absolute favorites should last years if not decades.
Agree about new designers - the days of YSL or Dior blowing everybody's doors off with M7 or original Dior Homme are long gone. I go to fragrance counters to try new stuff with very low expectations these days.

BUT If I absolutely love it..and know I will want it in my collection forever i may buy a big bottle immediately bc I'm afraid of reformulations and discontinue...I learned that the hard way. 2nd I will always overspray but I do it for me..at work and other gatherings I will go in with less sprays. 3..I always buy extraits if I can bc they are worth it and longevity is the the most important thing for me. I'm a perfume lover. I dont care how good something smells. .if it dont perform I wont buy again..

I honestly line to get fragrances at the 100ml level because my first one was 100 ml. Plus, I don't like having a lot so I get a lot of wear out of them. They usually will last a little over a year. Plus, I only stay with these, so I'll be repurchasing them whenever one bottle runs out. At worst, if I bought a bottle that I think is underdelivering (Cedrat Boise) then when I finish that bottle I'll just probably replace that with another scent.

  • @DarrylCobb

I agree, very common sense approach. My daily drivers for work, those I would purchase 100ml bottles. But special occasion fragrances, 20-50ml works. Hell, even those 8ml decanters are great. However, if I REALLY love fragrance, a 100ml bottle will be purchased. Something I would like to add though, sometimes people wear too many conflicting scents. Body wash has a scent, deordorant has a scent, lotion has a scent, shampoo, etc. Investing in scentless products is a good move, in my opinion. Also, nothing is better than a clean platform for fragrance to launch off of. Fresh shower and clean clothes are a must.

I must be an under sprayer. At work it’s almost always one spray only, and only rarely outside of work will I spray more than that. I change where I spray it to adjust the strength even further. I guess I mostly just wear colognes for myself, and for anyone very close to me to share in it.

Michella over at CurlyFragrance would like a word with you over number 3. 😁
I Do like this kind of content, even when I don't agree with all you're saying. Please keep it going! 👍
I do agree with number 2 and 3. But I see number 1 slightly different. I like my full bottle worthy fragrances a lot. That's why I buy them. Well, mostly actually, sometimes 'they get me' with a great deal on an ok one. But back to my point: if I like it and a bigger bottle is just a bit more money, say 50 for 50 ml or 60 for 100 ml or 130 vs 150, I want the bigger one. Not that I'll ever finish it myself except for perhaps 2 or 3 all-time faves, but I'm a social guy. If my friends tell me they like a certain smell, I love to be able to give them a sample or decant. Or if they come over before we go out, they can pick something to wear from my frag collection. 50 vs 90 or 130 vs 180, then I'll go smaller size, but being able to share my love for my bottles with others is a reason for me to go bigger size if the price difference isn't too much.
A slightly related thing I don't get with people that collect a lot: buying 100ml clones that cost the same or more than an 8-10ml decant. Yes, there are exceptions, like high quality clones for discontinued frags that go for crazy money on eBay or clones that are better versions of overhyped, overpriced, reformulated stuff, but when the original is on par and worth it, I'd rather have an 8-10 ml decant than a 100 ml clone. That would still last me a while and I'd rather have a little of something that is a high quality lovely fragrance than a lot of a less refined more synthetic smell alike.

I definitely agree that we shouldn't buy every flanker and that we shouldn't spray too much on our fragrances (sorry Curlyfragrance). And yes, any fragrance can garner compliments depending on how we wear it and how we present ourselves.

    Thanks for the "smackdown"..... Lol.
I agree 💯 on everything you said for sure.
The only time I ever buy the big bottle is if it's something that I JUST HAVE TO HAVE and the dept. store only has the big size the moment I want it.
I'm guilty of over spraying some.... But it's not always directly into my skin. Sometimes I veil myself with only hitting my skin in 2-3 places.
But as we all know, potency (like you said) determines how much.
I totally agree too about personality and style come first.... Fragrance is just a supporting enhancement.

Some good advice/ideas in here, Justin. The Dude abides 👍I often see people with hundreds of bottles buy 200ml bottles as back ups on top of multiple bottles already of the same fragrance and Im just like.... really?! Dust collectors. And I often see people, even a famous youtuber, say stuff like "you should spray 5 times - 2 in front of the neck, 2 behind the years and once on your chest (or wrist)... without taking under consideration the type of fragrance, the setting/event, the concentration/strength, etc. It's just unreasonable.
Keep up the good work and videos

In Serbia we decant a lot so I buy the biggest size and decant at least half of it so I think it's not a reason my game is trash but actually good and that I spend way less money like that. Just bought 150ml of bvlgari man in black for 50$ and split it with a friend so I got 75ml for 25$ and no... it's not a fake it was just opened previously

now I’m into 50 ml bottles because:
1- Definitely I agree with most that you mentioned except the last one, I guess it depends on the fragrance.
2- I consider 50 ml or less as a compact size which is more practical and I can travel and move with it easily.

I stopped buying large bottles for the most part - mostly buy 1.7s or 30ml now... once in a blue I'll get a big bottle of something if im worried it might get reformulated or I just love it that much and I'm going to wear the shit out of it.
flankers - I have to really love something to buy a flanker - i understand people collecting just to collect "for show" and I won't judge if that's their reasoning - it's their money lol
on your last point - I agree completely. I usually do 3-5 sprays (outside like the blue beast or TF oud wood intense - 3 sprays tops)... each side of neck, back of neck, and wrists (dont do that rub wrists together shit - makes me cringe when I see people do it)... for the people doing it 10+ - it better be some citrus based weak stuff - because then I get it, it just evaporates off your skin and maybe your bottle too big to carry around and respray (see point #1 lol)... but unless you trying to choke people out - no reason to spray more than 7-8 times (absolute most)

I really disagree with that 50 vs. 100 concept. I struggle to convince myself to buy a 50ml. Convincing is very hard when there is a 100ml available, but I struggle to even convince myself into buying 50ml scents that only come in 50ml because it just doesn't feel like good bang for my buck. Prime examples are from Xerjoff and Nishane: Suede et Safran, Uden, Nefs, Via Cavour I. The houses sell 100mls for most of their scents, but these ones are only sold in 50ml. I really have to "love it love it" to buy a 50ml in that €200 bracket, otherwise I prefer buying scents that are €300 for 100ml.

    • @stayfreshproductions
      @stayfreshproductions  2 года назад +2

I totally hear you. I have been tempted by that too. But the reality is this-in a year, you’ll most likely still have plenty left in that 50ml bottle, if you continue to acquire new fragrances and wear different stuff each day. And you will have obviously made that money back ten fold. So what are you really losing?

    • @DivineFrag
      @DivineFrag 2 года назад

@@stayfreshproductions There are some psychological factors that come into play imo. For example, I enjoy looking at a bottle that is more full than empty - if it's leaning towards empty, I might prefer to use it less. When a 50ml inevitably runs out, I might think "damn it, I knew that wasn't going to last long" - even if "long" in this case is years, in the moment I might still think it was bad value.
Then there's also priority - if there is a 100ml available for 300 vs. 50s are 200 and I have a vision for the size that my collection will be then I'd rather accumulate the 100mls first since they'll be better staples value wise.
      Just my 2 cents.

  • @berenddevries74
    @berenddevries74 2 года назад

    Great advice Justin!
I do have the larger size bottles of the scents I love and are "me". The last few months I downsized my collection to a "thirteen to the dozen" amount. (I just love to say I got a thirteen to the dozen collection) I had several dozen and found out most I didn't actualy like or enjoy that much or gave the love I should give them. After 25 years being a frag-head, I finaly took a look at which notes and scent-types are what I like and dislike. So what I didn't like, some I sold and some I just gave away. With only a small collection, larger bottles are, like you mentioned, not a problem.

Yep, I got a sample of Christmas Wine by Pineward Perfumes and nobody warned me that it lasts for ever and is very strong. Nothing to do with Christmas Wine here in my opinion. It smells more like broth with a lot of vegetables and it frustrated me a bit. Who wants to smell like broth vith cooked vegetables, definitely not me. But yes, strong and long lasting it is, one spray is more than enough and I used at least 4 😂If anybody out there loves this fragrance I'm sorry, it's only my personal opinion.
