    I have heard of a navy tradition involving the yard of beer where some sort of earned medal(I believe) is at the bottom and as part of your hazing ritual to get it you have to chug the yard of beer and then catch it in your mouth

    "Stein" in german is a rather loose term and may refer to a certain group of ceramic goods (see "Steingut"). To add to the confusion, the typical stubby german beer bottle is called "Steinieform", but I have never come across a single one that was made of other than glass.
