- In this movie review, we explore "Companion" (2025), a thriller directed by Drew Hancock, starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid. The film starts with a seemingly sweet meet-cute between Iris (Thatcher) and Josh (Quaid), but quickly veers into dark, uncharted territory when their weekend getaway with friends at a secluded lakeside estate reveals Iris's true nature.
In this video, I break down:
The Plot: Unravel the twists and turns of this cleverly crafted narrative. We'll discuss how "Companion" starts with a seemingly simple premise before diving into its true nature, without spoiling too much for those who haven't seen it yet.
Performances: Sophie Thatcher delivers a standout performance as Iris, while Jack Quaid brings layers to his character, Josh. We'll analyze how their acting elevates the film's impact.
Whether you're a fan of horror or just love a good thriller with unexpected turns, "Companion" has something for everyone. Make sure to watch till the end for our final verdict on whether this film is worth your time in theaters.

Absolutely had a blast with it! Great sound design, and it’s super suspenseful and thrilling! I feel like Quaid & Thatcher are at their best here, it’s just a lot of fun!
Good call on the sound design, I agree
How is it suspenseful? She literally tells you what happens at the beginning lol
That’s the beauty of it all. The film is still able to surprise and entertain in spite of that. Cmon Aaron, you should know that. You’re a film guy lol
it is time we start naming this the best January for movies in the last two decades.
I love Sophie Thatcher.
She’s awesome
I also had not seen the twist and I cant believe they put that in the trailer! That was such a blast to discover in real time!
Shout out to Creggar
Saw it in IMAX Thursday and loved it.
also so glad i didn’t catch the trailer and only saw the teaser before watching!
Thanks for your review Austin 🤍
Another fantastic video! Thank you Austin!
Excited to see this on Saturday 🎉
Really enjoyed it.
I wish the second trailer had less spoilers.
Sophie Thatcher was amazing!
I'm so excited even though I watched the second trailer. Seeing this on Saturday
Same! Seeing tomorrow, can’t wait!😊
Don’t worry, there are plenty of surprises in store!
@@AustinBurkeI've seen it, and it f**king rocksss
I saw it Monday night at the AMC Scream Unseen and it was a blast, I love this movie.
Was "on the bubble" about seeing this movie. Not much in January, so I almost went today. Maybe your review will convince me to hit the theater tomorrow.
Lmk what you think
Sounds like a winner to me; definitely gonna check this out once it’s streaming.
Good review, Austin. I agree, definitely lots of surprises!
Unfortunately I did watch the trailer that had spoilery elements but hey, I still had a blast with this. It's definitely my favorite of 2025 so far. January finally gives us an awesome horror-esque movie. There was one moment towards the end where Jack Quaid thinks he's dealt with the problem and then the other person said something that just will completely screw over Jack Quaid in getting away with his plan, I was like - "OHHHH SHIT" 😂 I'm glad there were still moments like that despite me seeing the trailer.
I enjoyed this movie so much, especially the over arching theme about how dangerous ai can be if we are not responsible (especially with the sentient component). I really liked it a lot and had a great time watching it
I really liked it, I'm officially a Sophie Thatcher fan after seeing this and Heretic.
Agree! Just saw it a few hours ago with my dad and we had a great time
Saw this with a crowd of...4 other people. But I still had a lot of fun. I got the tones and themes and think it all really gelled. I also only saw the teaser before so the whole plot development was very fresh for me.
I went in, not even seeing the trailer, as I never see trailers on principal as Ihey always give too much away, when the first reveal happened I thought Wow, as I just didn't see it coming. The rest of the twists and turns were great. And the two leads were perfect. I will definitely be seeing it again.
I only saw the teaser trailer and I was hooked! Was skeptical because there was no second trailer and the marking wasn’t strong. I was glad I didn’t see the second trailer but I did see a tv spot and it did somewhat spoil it.
I knew going in, didn’t effect my viewing experience at all! 8/10
Sophie Thatcher is a star on the rise
Great movie, brisk 90 minutes, twists and turns like a thriller should have (cos imo it was closer to thriller than a horror) with good bit of comedy. The less you know the better, just go and watch it, I had a blast and I went in blind only knowing its Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid movie.
100% it flew by
Sophie Thatcher is amazing 😍. After Heretic she became my celebrity crush.
Surprisingly very good film! The plot twists were great and so was acting and directing. It set out to be exactly what it was and fully commited to it. Honestly one of the best movies I have seen in a while. If you like these kind of movies that is. It's a thriller!
Changing the background photo in Letterboxed for this movie is nice, especially when you find the photo that says 69%
This year’s Strange Darling?
I like that comparison
That movie was excellent. I think Companion is this year's M3GAN.
I went in with low expectations and i ABSOLUTELY enjoyed it! Definitely is one of my favourite films of 2025 so far. So glad you enjoyed it. Its not by any means a masterpiece like dune part 2 etc, just lots of fun to watch.
Trailers suck nowadays. They definitely give away too much imo. I saw this at the Cinemark Secret movie on Monday. It was a good movie, even if you knew the twist ruined in the trailers. Fun time in the theater overall.
Watched, they end it with Emotion.
My Rating is ⭐️9/10
I want to see it so badly. I just moved to college and don't know if I'll be able to see it on the big screen.
It’ll be worth the wait!
only saw the first trailer, and felt it only 'ruined' one aspect of the film. but that aspect was then blown up ten minutes in, so did it really? and knowing Iris' true nature going in, the dialog was brilliant insetting the reveal. I missed my bet on who the second would be, but figured somebody else pretty soon in the film. very good film and I gave it 4 stars.
I want to see the Sergie actor play Omega Red for MCU.
Must see movie. Spoilers did not hurt my enjoyment at all. A little violence but not very graphic or bloody. just a good time. Iris is Siri spelled backwards.
Just watched this in the cinema. Didnt know nothing about the story and didnt watch any trailers but a small scene of the movie was shown with other quick scenes of other movies just before the movie started. It showed something that kinda little bit gave the plot away.
Thats was cringe. And then the intro voice over started and that gave some story element away. And then i could kinda guess what the story was going to be because the lines the actors where saying and stuff.
Maybe i watched too many movies 😅 so the story went in the direction i thought it would go. Maybe they shouldve hide the plot more?
The movie was entertaining and it is oke. but the surprise was gone already. But i enjoyed myself. Only the last 20 minutes the tension just went away for me.
The person who edited that 2nd trailer should be fired.
3:41 Austin I know you were mentioning the idea of that the second trailer that gives it away, but doesn’t this image also kind of give it away? Just asking cause this is a non-spoiler review.😅
Nope lol
Not even remotely haha
@ I just assumed with the eyes it would be giving it away lol
No. If you’ve seen the movie, sure. But those who haven’t seen the movie have zero idea what those eyes mean. And if people tell me they do, they’re lying, or they’ve seen the trailer haha
It's a good movie, enjoyed it.
Finding out this has some people from Barbarian has me curious about it since I thought that film was pretty solid. But I am checking out Dog Man instead, so I’ll have to wait for this one sometime later this year. I’m certainly interested in it.
I won’t give any details that may ruin the movie for you guys. I just wanna give a small review because you guys have to watch it.
I was expecting Heart eyes to be the secret early screening but it was Companion. At first I was disappointed but immediately I change my mind.
From the very first moment the writing its phenomenal, it’s so funny and smart at the same time. So unique. The first act was one of the recent best first acts ever. Even if act two and three weren’t that awesome they were great.
The action was on point, everybody did an excellent job. Lukas Gage was definitely the best. Rupert Friend was also a scene stealer.
And for you fan guys, the violence. Wow! Very well done. Very violent and gory.
All of you should go and watch it. This movie has the potential of being the best horror movie of the year and one of the best of the decade and the century.
Sophie Thatcher was good, the rest of the movie was a rejected netflix Black Mirror episode. Unfortunately disappointed, but glad others liked it. The writer needs some more practice outside of Fred the Movie 3 IMHO.
Nah
@AustinBurke it's literally my opinion
And I’m literally allowed to disagree, so I repeat, NAH
When did we get so soft
@@AustinBurke and I clarified that it was my opinion. Why are you acting like we don't speak to each other directly?
Why is Jack quaid always limping in 3rd acts???
Shame the trailer and poster basically spoils the movie
The poster doesn’t
@@AustinBurke Thought it did with the eyes. Would have been much better if it wasn't as obvious in the trailers then it would be a bigger shock once it's revealed
Whoever edited the 2nd trailer should be fired. Literally spoiled the main plot. And before the movie, a trailer for Ryan Cooglers Sinners played and they also spoiled that too.
Yeah i absolutely hated that hailee stienfeld reveal. I would love to see that revelation in the theatre.
Good, im not gonna check the trailer :)
I like the similarities to Ex Machina.
f modern movie trailers
I am holding back because of Jack Quaid. I think he’s a mediocre actor. Can’t stand him on The Boys. Is he better in this?
More of the same from him
@ ugh… she’s such a good actress. I feel like I’ll be annoyed by him.
Do not watch the trailer!!!! I think the trailer gave up way too much. Seen it today and it was very good, a few twist and turns are enjoyable that the trailer gives away. This movie is definitely worth seeing. I enjoyed it almost as much as the substance. Original idea and a fun watch.
I work in a movie theater. i didn't think much about the trailer when i watched it. The poster we have, i don't think spoils anything. then i read about it and think i have the idea. Then i saw what might have been the second trailer and i don't recall anything spoiling anything. Now i am so confused
