  • Around 37% of CO2 emissions and over 34% of global final energy demand are attributable to the building and construction sector. Thus, there is a global trend looking at construction materials and their production processes to become more sustainable. Just this March the Buildings and Climate Global Forum took place for the first time to initiate a new impetus in international collaboration for building decarbonisation and resilience. In discussions surrounding urban development and climate concerns, there's a demographic often overlooked: the rapidly growing population of individuals residing in informal settlements, numbering over a billion. Despite their significant presence and exponential growth, their plight is frequently sidelined in conversations about building and climate issues.
This webinar explores the imperative of sustainable construction and design in uplifting the living standards of those in informal urban settlements. It discussed the barriers and opportunities of sustainable construction within informal urban contexts, demonstrating the scalability of sustainable construction projects and evaluating the current global landscape and necessary changes to transform construction practices for marginalized urban communities.
Speakers: Sheela Patel, Roof over our Heads; Alexandre Apsan Frediani, IIED; Arne Janssen, Cities Alliance
The event is the first of a global Peer Learning series on Urban Innovation to achieve just and sustainable cities, hosted by GIZ and Cities Alliance, in collaboration with partners throughout 2024. Across five sessions, the series will explore practical approaches to just and sustainable urban planning, construction, and financing with a focus on informal urban areas.
