    There's something about your channel I really like Craig. Feels very genuine. Could be that 'smaller RUclipsr' vibe that doesn't feel over edited or too flashy.
    Great information. Great vibe of the channel. Great community.
    Keep this up, it's definitely working. I always tune in to your videos especially new ones.

      Thanks for the nice words. I actually have a pretty demanding full time job so it keeps me from fine tuning some videos, but that's how I am so it fits me. I'm not the flashy type and like the stuff not everybody else is reviewing. Plus I can't afford to buy every Mac each launch like the big channels but I like that as I can try different types of products. One day I hope the channel pays off but for now a fun hobby. Thanks again.

    I'm still on the M1 Mini and use the Satechi (horizontal hub) with a Samsung 970 EVO NVMe at 1 TB installed. This connected to the OWC Thunderbolt Dock is providing for two 4K monitors, five lightning ports, HDMI, and several USB-A ports, along with an SD and Mini-SD card reader. With all external drives connected, the little Mini has 14 TB of storage - all working like a charm.

    This SHOULD be a TB 4 (USB 4) connection at 40 Gbps and then the NVMe SSD would be significantly faster. And it leaves all the Mac Mini ports exposed on top, and a huge cable mess.

    I'm running a 2013 MBP retina thingy 13" with a 2TB thunderbolt (Lacie) drive and I'm looking to upgrade in the next year or so ... yeah I squeeze Apple for every dollar and previously owned a 2007 MBP 13". In my use-case, they are the cheapest laptops on the planet, but I have to admit they have never left my desk for any reason. I reckon I'm ready to "de-evolve" back to a computer/monitor/keyboard/trackpad situation and think the M2 Mac Mini might be my launch point into this new/old era of discrete components. The last time I had a separate monitor it was a 17inch CRT. My last dedicated keyboard was a wired Logitech thing, and around that time the trackpad didn't exist, except for a Wacom tablet, or a track ball mess. Cheers, $0.02

      Thanks for sharing. The M2 Mac mini is a great system. Just make sure you find a good screen to go with it. If a new iMac comes out I would look at that also since it comes with an incredible screen that would normally cost about 1K by itself. But if you are getting the M2 mini try and fine a good 4K panel and it's a great system for sure.

    Thanks! For those planning to buy a stand anyway, they run about $25, so they'll be getting a useful hub for just $45. Also, given that for some bizarre reason the Mac mini WiFi and BT antennas radiate downward, installing it vertically in a stand should increase their coverage.

    1) - Make version II of this hub powered.
    2) Support thunderbolt 4 speed of 40 GB/sec. in version II.
    3) Support a single SSD of at least 8TB in a new version.
    4) Support two SSDs as needed and configure them to work as RAID 0 or 1 if a user wants to.
    Then the new version of this hub will be an excellent device. The kind I needed a year ago.

      @@paulhorn24 I don’t actually own it yet, but saw the Stand and Hub with SSD enclosure reviewed by another RUclips channel just yesterday and it looked almost perfect (the only downside noted was that it only works with M.2 SATA SSD drives and not NVMe, but for my intended use that isn’t a dealbreaker). I’m looking to replace my wife’s 2013 MacBook Air with a Mini, so any speeds are going to be an improvement.

    • @dondonaldson1684

      The Satechi hub is really good as it fits under the Mac Mini and it has the ability to add an NVME drive. The added benefit is that the added ports are located in the front. It matches the footprint and colour of the Mini and has a slight gap to allow some airflow for cooling even though I have NEVER heard the fan come on. My daughter has the nonSSD version on her M1 Mini and just uses an external SSD to get the same result. We both use dual monitor setups.

    Number one question: Does the hub heat up? I’ve used these no name adapters and the heat is insane for an adapter. For whatever reason just connecting the adapter and not doing anything but having it plugged into a Usb-C it heats up.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Год назад

      So far it heats up about as much as any hub I have used. Not crazy hot or anything like that but can get slightly warm if you are using it for very extended transfers. I think a major part of any hub heating up too, with storage, is how much does the M.2 heat up. NVMEs will heat up more than SATA M.2s for sure.

So you will get slightly faster performance from the NVMe drives but they run hotter so pros and cons on both sides. It's really comes down to the orientation on the Minsorpuru hub and for the other two I would just review option as other than that they are very close.

    You willl be bottlnecking your m2's data transfer performance with 10 gigconnection. If you don't care about using your thunderbolt 4 speed then that is fine but if you are transfering large amounts of data or need to drive 4K 60 displays or 5k displays you're leaving 20gig, 30gig, and 40gig performance on the table. I had a "slower" nvme drive that was limited to 800mbs with a 10gig external enclosure and with a different enclosure I was getting 2700mb/s. That was with a gen 3 NVME. I have other drives that get between 4000 and 6000mb/s. Just be carefult and know that everything in the chain has to be able to do the speed you want. That includes these 10gig ports. Call Digit as full thunderbolt docks that allow you to utilize the full speed of your periphials.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Год назад +2

      Yes for sure. This is what it is and less expensive than a thunderbolt 4 hub. So it's a trade but most users like me who used my Sony ev10 can do editing and most of my work with 850 MB/s speeds. Some need the speed for sure but 90 percent are just basic users and just need extra storage.

      @@craigneidel totally! Just wanted to make sure people knew. I bought an incorrect enclosure, and was unable to get the maximum throughput, even though it was plenty fast for most usages. • @EdwardBartel
      @EdwardBartel Год назад

      @@NakeanWickliff This is accurate, but there doesn't appear to be a thunderbolt hub that will hold a mini (like this one or the Satechi, for example), especially one that includes NVME storage. I think my use-case aligns with most users of this product - I like it because it holds the mini, incorporates a front-facing SD card slot for importing images from my camera and has a fastish NVME slot. The integrated drive will be for non-critical storage or backups, I'm not sure which, yet.
      My only concern is why does it have a 2 TB limitation? Craig said he was going to look into that one, but I haven't seen an update from him on this issue. Would I rather it had a 40gb connection? Yes. But for the price, this hub adds more functionality for me than the Satechi because the alternative is limited to SATA or 5Gb bandwidth.
