  • This is my thoughts and biased opinion of Hoplomachus and what my conclusion is after 40hrs+ of gameplay and beating it with 3 heroes on hardest difficulty. I also included some things they cou;ld add in an expansion to fix these issues.

    So far, I'm enjoying it. I don't care about the length of the game really, but I have to say that the easiest difficulty, Chosen, is still pretty hard. I would consider Chosen to be Normal mode, then the other two being Hard and Insane.

    I agree with most, if not all, of your points. I'm finishing my second playthrough, and the shiny starts wearing off. However, I love this game so much that I want to work on a set of houserules to make it enjoyable. The market is an interesting idea, but I was thinking of something a bit different: how about replenishing your tactics at the start of every fight (which would require to have a boost on the opponent's side as well to compensate), but you could spend a tactic to reroll any of your misses on one roll? Also, I was thinking that killing the tribune would give you the penalty of not replenishing your tactics for the next fight, or start with none.
    An additional con for me is replaying the same map over and over again on a given act. While not mandatory, the game pushes your to do that to deplete the stack of local units so that the primus won't have too many of them at his side. However, this is so repetitive. I don't have any idea yet on how to solve this aside from my "gauntlet" experience (play only the primus fights and the scion fight, as a shorter experience, with adjustments on how fast you gain upgrades - see the "Draftomachus" rules I've posted in BGG files if you're interested, though it's only a rough version for now).

    I was thinking of buying Victorum, maybe a 2nd hand copy. I usually like CTG games, Cloudspire is my #1 game of all time. I love TMBs too. Yes, they use dice but are more balanced toward a predictable result (hey, "too many bones" is the game name, and bones are supposed to be the "misses"). Also, I own all old Hoplomachus games and yes, I got frustrated with the dice and I finally came up with house rules to mitigate blanks: There are plenty of ways to mitigate bad rolls. Then I saw this video. mmmm...it makes me this that I probably will enjoy all about this game but the dice roll...house rules again? Thanks for the video.

      They originally made the game with no blessings but added them in because even then they realized the dice were too much swing. I think if you played the original one and loved it you will love this. CS is my favorite tactical game. This is not one for me.

      Thanks for watching. And it was great the first 2 full playthrough but after became more a struggle to dive into. How many full campaign playthroughs have you played?

    I agree with most of this, though I’d probably give it a 3/5. It’s hard to enjoy a game that’s so dice-heavy coming from a Cloudspire background. Play styles between the two are massively different, spire dice in CS have just enough randomness for me that it’s not frustrating. Victorum triggers that rage-quit reflex in me like no other board game I’ve ever played lol. That being said, I do enjoy the different units and maps. I’ll probably end up buying their next expansion pack for it in the hopes that it fixes some issues I have, but I would not recommend it to most people until then. Good review, thanks for the content!

      @@mortalcompass5229 I’d actually love a market. I think it could be great to be able to purchase health potions that could be used mid-combat or in between events without using a spectate. They could add potions/items that add/subtract hit die or allow for re-rolls. There might be some conflict with Tactics at that point but as far as I’m concerned those could be worked into the market as well. Armor could grant a unit absorb, etc.. Lots of options

      Don't get me wrong. I really like CTG as a company. I was just disappointed in this one more than I've ever been disappointed by a game. All the reviewers had me certain I was gonna love it, and it was just boring. I love Cloudspire > Too Many Bones. Have no interest in Burn Cycle.

      @@Copterman Yes you make such a great point. Even the way they designed the storage/box layout was off, Felt cheap and rushed compared to your mentioned games

    Those dice... Played 2 rounds and was out. This is just stupid. Make an amazing game, but then resolve combat with simple 'roll a 5 or 6'...

    What do you think about the new quick mode for victorum? Have you ever tried ?

    • @mortalcompass5229
      @mortalcompass5229  Год назад +1

      I have not. I think it will help a bit in reduce the act 4 drag. But my ultimate concerns were the combat mechanism and they from what I read didn't do anything to resolve it. I'm not a successful game designer so I can't be upset about it.

    I cannot imagine Chip Theory pays you to keep review bombing all of their crappy games. Yet another 30+ games played of a very low rated Chip Theory Game. You sir are a true masochist!

      As i said earlier, I was Hyped for this game when on Kickstarter. I had great hopes for a shorter campaign-style game. It's not fair to base a review off of 2-5 plays, but playing a game takes time. but during that time, we get exposed to the core more. Cloudspire was a bad start but because of the time invested, it started to shine more and more. This was the opposite. A great start that faded more and more.

    Can we get CTG to comment on this, please? Their silence merely confirms everything said in this video.
