Jack Sheldon - think of the rare privilege to be the trumpeter who introduces such a beautiful tune to the world in the movie soundtrack! Jack was something else again - comedian, actor, voice-over artist and great musician. He played beautifully but I remember watching him at the old Alphonse's in Toluca Lake - after the number was over watching his face - what is Jack thinking? He was hilarious! Anybody sitting next to him was usually laughing.
Wow, unbelievable. A new high in playing together. Every single one a virtuoso. But that tenor player. Never heard it like that! So inventive! A doctor of jazz! Beautiful arrangement. It must be nice to play in a band where everyone is complementing one another so well and yet playing as individuals, all to make one whole gorgeous movement.
this song will always make me think of the opening credits of that film, the long, loving pans of Big Sur, the coast that I can never see again except as a lowly tourist. Once i lived in paradise; then i had to leave.
Absolutely one of my favourite songs since high school when I had first played this piece of music in the school orchestra. Johnny Mandel did an excellent job writing the music.😊❤
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my music teachers for exposing me to this beautiful living art form called jazz.. it has been and still is a great joy in my life.
Small correction - singular - The Sandpiper. See opening credits also on RUclips. Jack comes in with the melody the moment the Elizabeth Taylor credit comes on the screen. That kind of thing is no accident. Best Song Oscar - 1965 - Johnny Mandel with lyrics by Paul Francis Webster. Not the greatest movie but one of the best opening sequences ever! Add to your list - they don't make 'em like that anymore.
a guy below had the pleasure of studying with Michael moore one of my alltime fav bass players lucky him.this group is always worth listening to classy musicians playing classy scores by david.nice stuff.many thanks.
At 4:52 the trumpet player quotes ornithology and then the bass player smiles... it’s adorable
This trombonist is awesome.
Nice tight ensemble with great players.
George Young sounds great! So does the whole band.
That sax solo though 😮💨
Nothing like listening to really talented musicians 👍👏

Great musicianship! I have to admit that sax solo has a lot of bells and whistles tied togther sooo nicely. Simply exquisite.

Just perfect. The changes in this tune get me every time. 2-5-1. Minor ninths.
