The most beloved voice of the 70's - and her brother was a fabulous arranger and their voices blended together so wonderfully. All of us who were alive back then feel such a tinge of sadness because of her tragic story. It is good that her recordings are still available for new generations to appreciate.

Wow, they were so talented. This show was classy, they looked classy, just complete talent. Karen was thin, but never sounded better. Their music may have not been liked by everyone but nobody could ever say they weren't exceptional musicians. Her voice has this haunting quality, a sadness that makes even their happier songs have a tinge of sadness. But her voice was built for all those sad ballads. It's nice that so many people of the younger generation are discovering them and keeping their legacy alive.

It’s wonderful that you are noticing these things. I love it. ❤️

What you hear in this was from a tv special. They pre-recorded most all of their tv appearances in studio, both vocals and music, then lip-synced while recording the video. This was because they were perfectionists and wanted the performance to come off as such. They considered themselves to be recording artists more so than performing artists even though they did an extreme amount of that (another story). It absolutely goes without saying that Karen's voice is beyond comprehension to me. I do feel that a lot of credit for what you hear goes to Richard. He truly KNEW her voice and how to "showcase " it with his incredible arrangements. I feel he can be credited with coming up with a sound of their own. Dereck thank you for listening to them and reacting. It is so great to see a younger person listening to and appreciating what many of us have for over 50 years now.

Burt Bacharach and Hal David, an iconic 60s songwriting team (they penned many of Dionne Warwick's hits), were associates of Herb Alpert, the A of A&M Records and a significant recording artist in his own right; Carpenters were with A&M their whole career 1969 onward, and their first really big hit, Close To You, was a previously-obscure Bacharach/David song.

Superstar, Now, Rainbow Connection, Tryin' to Get the Feeling Again ( you can hear the rustle of the sheet music when she turns the page), Do You Hear What I Hear (Richard had to record the 1st verse because Karen was playing around, but the rest is her Lead Vocal). There are others. I think most if not all of the vocals on the Old Fashioned Christmas album are 1st takes EXCEPT Santa Claus Is Coming To Town which they had recorded years earlier.

Just like you, fans have wanted to hear the entire versions of these songs, but unfortunately, apart from "Sing", "Someday" and "We've only just begun" these songs were not recorded in full by the Carpenters. And the recording of "Someday" (for their 1969 debut album "Offering") was one that neither Richard nor Karen were particularly happy with. This is part of the reason that they included it in this medley, to get a "second chance" at it. In years since, Richard has said that they might have re-recorded the entire song at some point had Karen lived longer.

You must react to Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft. Their most elaborate production.

Karen sang very softly, but she had great breath control and she could hold a note forever. During the taping of this special, singer John Davidson (one of their guests) supposedly asked her, "Do you have a third lung??" 🙂

Why is it that when Karen starts to sing, fears start coming out of my eyes.? I am 60 years old and Karen has a beatiful, angelic., voice where nobody can match.

Yes, KC was known for single take perfection. I think you've reacted to "Superstar", Dereck; that recording is one example, the vocal on that track (which was a sizeable hit single) is not only a first take but the first time she ever sang the song...

Karen sang a duo with Perry Como who lived right down the street from me. It was on Perry Como Christmas special.

This is my second time hearing.
I love the way you get into the instruments.
I saw you cry to Now by the Carpenters. Thank you for crying. I do not like watching the guys react because I really dont think they feel that they are to manly to cry. If it is beautiful CRY.
I want to let you know that Karen is in the top 10 women drummers in the world.
PLEASE check out her Christmas solo.
    Keep up the good work.😁🤘

Check out the Carpenters' Bacharach medley recorded live at Walter Reed medical center a decade earlier, in 1970. Richard's hair alone is worth your time 🤣😁 ...and amazing Karen in her Happy Place - killin' it at the drum kit. Knowing When to Leave is actually quite an up tempo song, at least the way they did it. 😃👍🏻

A Lot of the songs were written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and they wrote the most memorable songs ever.
