Dharavi is the largest slum in Mumbai and the 2nd largest in the world. It is also currently the most densely populated living area in the world. There are many slums in the city, large and small. But yes, you heard right that slum rehabilitation projects have speeded up in recent years, especially near the international airport. Lots of people have moved out of slums. You see, slums generally exist in Mumbai because of scarce and very expensive real-estate. Love your videos!!

Mumbai has two very big slum area’s one is Dharavi and other is Deonar. However there are 2/3 small hut nets situated in different parts. The government has recently proposed to redevelop Dharavi by constructing buildings as replacement to these slums so poor people can live comfortably. However opposition leaders trying to create obstacle for their vested interest.

Imam & Moazzam - Dharavi is the biggest slum. There are few other small slums but not as big as Dharavi.
Imam - You are absolutely right !! Almost 40% of all the slums in Mumbai have been converted to modern high raise buildings with smaller flats. The Government of Maharashtra has converted the slums by constructing high rise buildings and giving the slum house owners proper flats and importantly FREE OF COST. In about 8-10 years, a substantial portion of the slums will be converted into high rise buildings.

Ek bade office mein kaam karne wala peon ya fir cleaning staff wagairah log kya dusre shahar se aate Hain ya fir uss shahar ke high rises mein rehte hain? Ji nahin... Ye sab log unn jagaho pe rehte Hain Jo hum naak unchi karke slum keh dete Hain. You find such places in and around New York and every other big city where the rents are so high that the lower strata can only afford dilapidated places within their means.

Gabi, Thailand has its share of poor ppl living in very bad houses and Bangkok has its own set of slums. The Klongs of Bangkok stink to high heavens and very poor sanitation. Contrasts in every major city! New York ppl know they have lot of slums outside of Manhattan. You look at your own country before passing judgment on others, Gabi.
BTW hasn’t your visa expired and you are overstaying?🤔

Marin drive road 3 km. Road hai Jo ki curve hai raat ke waqt street light jagmagati hai to half necklace jaisa dikhta hai. Isliye queen nackless kahte hain . Charo taraf samudra hone ki vajah se Mumbai mai zamin ki kami hai jisse log main Mumbai ke nazdik jhopadapatti mai rahte hain . Jisse jaldi kaam par pahunch jaye . Main Mumbai mai one Bedroom kichan ka ghar 2crore ho jata hai . Door makan lenge to aane jane local train mai 2-3 ghante lag jate hain . Mumbai ghumne dekhne ke liye thik hai . Zindagi kafi hard hai . Logo ke pas Rupaye hain lekin makan nahi hai . Isliye unauthorised slum ban jate hain. Amitabh Bachchan ne apne interview mai kaha tha ki subah Mumbai aapko nind mai ek tamacha marti hai aur kahti hai ki utho naam kamao paise kamao. Middle class aur lower class ki zindagi kafi mushkil bhari hai.

Imam and Moazzam, I see you asked about mumbai slums. Forgive me for long post but let me share some insights on mumbai slums.
To answer you question: Yes, Lots of slums in Mumbai. Almost every suburb will have a slum in it. There must be at least 2-3 dozen slum settlements all over Mumbai. Maybe even more. Any unused vacant land will be taken over by slums. Over 40-50% of Mumbai is slum. I grew up in north eastern side of mumbai and slums where less than 10 feet from my building and from my balcony it was vast sea of slum. My english medium school was about 20 mins away but by the time I was in 10th standard the mountain behind my school where we used to go hiking was taken over by slum and the whole mountain is slum.
Its deceptive to say slum is only for poor people. Over 90% of these slums are not owned by its residents but are actually owned by a sophisticated network of toughies, goondas and even local politicians, power brokers, power proxies. They take over government land or if they are part of a powerful political entity such as say the Shiv sena or if its a muslim slum then they will have connection to a powerful muslim man in waqf committies or haj committies or muslim mafia. Its all maintained in delicate balance invisibly.
Now your question about slum redevelopment.. yes its a huge huge part of Mumbai municipal corporation. For the last 25-30 years the state and central government provides funds for slum redevelopment.. its a complext corrupt nexus between politicians+government-muncipal bodies+builders unscrupples + NGO-Social activists.
FUnds are swallowed up and the slum residents also know the game very well. THe slum resident is given a flat somewhere far away in a proper building and they are asked to vacate the land. The resident takes the flat and rents it out and he gets a supplemental income but never vacates the slum. The project fails but bunch of peopple make money.
Now dont get me wrong there are some places where slum people are moved into buildings but since slum people are not ussed to paying society fees or maintenance charges they don't now how to upkeep these building..how to deal with trash etc etc.. so I know of cases where the slum people then go back to the slum and the slum building rots like a eye sore in the middle of it.. It becomes a failed experiment because for lot of slum dwellers the idea of living in a flat itself is new and they dunno the civil rules of it..
So over all its a mixed affair. Don't assume slums are low income. THe rents of some of these slum huts goes from Rs 8000 Rs 15000 deppending on how many rooms they hae and if there is access to sanitation.
Slum economy is its own economy with proper players in it.
Everything you see in mumbai is tied to a small microcosm of capitalist economy. ever square inch of the congested street is auctioned and there is a tenant and a rent seeker. Even the street vendor sitting on the pavement with a small basket will have to ppay something to the municipal officer or some tough guy who will take care of the encroachment department or a housing society that complains.
Its like everybody knows the rules and who stands to gain and who stands to loose. Its somewhat different than in a muslim country where muslim population will surrender to one top tough guy on the top and obey. In India there is chaos and slum but everybody is aware that its illegal but they all have a price and if that price is paid they will move away.. So in the north easter suburb now all the chaotic sstreets and slum vendorss on the streets have been cleaned up.. the streets now have pavements and footpaths and for almost 25 years I have seen nothing but very shanty congested slum shops ..All disappeared in 6 months.. just like that... no chaoss, no violence..the municapality came..someon struck some kind of deal.. I dont know where they went but I am guessing everybody got what they want and its clean.
So I a sure dharavi's day will come and the land under dharavi is more valuable than manhattan in real money without exaggeration. So overnight residents of dharavi will leave for the right pprice.. they know what they have under neath that slum.
THe BKC (bandra kurla complex) you see as posh in this video..You will not believe how it was if I showed you a picture of that pplace just 20 years ago. My college was near it and it was the smelliesst stinkiest most polluted toxic dumping ground you will ever see.. Lakhs and lakhs of slum and it was worst because it was chemical pollution that will kill you. You could smell toxic chemical smell just passing thru by train.. Mumbai has a river called methi river that was once a very vibrant river but in last 50 years its polluted and almost a swamp now because of the chemical factories in BKC area.. Look how it is now.. cleaned up and multinationals and tree clad avenues...All of that happened silently without riots and fights.. THat is different than muslim countries where it can turn nasty because people dont like to compromise and get aggrieved soon. So I do believe what he says. Mumbai will clean up but its just waiting for a rich man and every slum resident is waiting for hiss payday.. That is how india achieves social justice and wealth distribution. Even the poor knowss he has a stake in the democracy and he can snatch from that rich guy whom he keepss closeby and under his watch right there in his own street..lol.
