Army wife here, I think your tips are great! Elegant is definitely the goal. You can tell spouses from girlfriends usually by the level of appropriateness to the attire. Also I would add for the army at least, make sure that you can go from sitting to standing without adjusting the dress or shape wear because that is what you do the whole ball is sit down then stand up, over and over and you don’t want to me messing with your dress every time.
There’s definitely a ton of sitting/standing at our balls too!! I didn’t even think to mention shape wear! That’s definitely something you don’t want to be adjusting all night!
My husband is a USMC veteran. We attended several balls while he was active duty, but he’s been out for a few years now. We were extended an invite from a local command for this year and I’m SO excited to get to attend again 😁

It's good to know a slit is ok. I have my eye on an emerald green dress and the slit is a little high. It's probably similar to the green dress you showed at the end and I wasn't sure if it was appropriate. Definitely going to buy it now. Thank you!
I feel like it’s sooo hard to even find a dress without a slit these days! But yeah, nothing to worry about as long as the overall look is appropriate and looks put together! I’m also obsessed with emerald green right now, so good color choice 😍

I just wanna reconfirm what you said about the bright pink dress in the DO NOT wear, the only issue is the color? I’ve got a dress picked out similar to it’s style but in black and was afraid it would be seen as informal bc there was no shoulder coverings and the slit and I heard that they normally want you to wear some kind of sleeve to the ball😅thank you so much for posting this though it was really helpful on what to expect
Correct! The bright pink dress (second to last one mentioned), the only issue would be the color. I think that style of dress in black would look classy! Also, there aren’t any rules about shoulder coverings so that may be outdated information. I have seen that info being shared too, but it’s never been my experience or something I’ve heard of until recently. My guess is someone’s command was much more strict or it’s just super outdated information - either way, I wouldn’t worry about it because that’s not a rule or expectation across the board.
New marine corps girlfriend here and I’ve been stressing out over my dress it’s beautiful floor length it’s black with green detailing and i feel like I’m going to stand out to much… I’m also very much an introvert
Your dress sounds beautiful! From how you described it, I don’t think you’ll stand out too much! Keep in mind that I showed more “subtle” dress styles in this video simply as example. You can message me a picture on Instagram if you’d like my opinion on your dress! Ultimately, you want to be comfortable and confident.
Thank you. See I’m super nervous about what to wear to my my boyfriends army dinner. He hasn’t told me what the dress code is supposed to be but I assumed it has to be formal since they can bring their significant others.

Have him get more info for you on the dress code! Dinners can vary and may be different from ball attire! If it is a formal event, I think the dress you described would be fine!
Update I was so concerned and the attire is Christmas sweaters, ugly Christmas sweaters😑🤣.

I have a beautiful white dress with a gold sequin pattern all over, it’s v neck, long, and appropriate. the only thing i’m concerned about is the back of the dress, my back will be out a bit but i also have very long hair that will be covering it, should i look for other options?
Is the v neck a deep cut? If it’s not super revealing, and the only deep/dramatic cut is the back, it sounds fine!! If you want, you can send me a picture of the dress on Instagram and I can let you know what I think from seeing it!
So this is my first/ only marine corps ball with my boyfriend, and I have been nervous with looking at dresses. Is having a slit in the skirt of the dress ok, yes or no? Just curious because if not it’s been hard finding some without.
Totally fine! As long as the slit isn’t too high that it becomes revealing!

Good question!! Graduations are much less formal, but you still want to look put together! Girls tend to wear dresses, but more along the lines of what you’d wear to church. Not super casual, but not formal!

Good question!! No, most Marines don’t know formal dining etiquette anyways 🤪 Basic etiquette and manners is all you really need!

My boyfriend has a military ball coming up and this is our first time going… he’s a Marine and I have a dress and everything but I’m not sure how to do my hair that’s 4c and I have on a nose ring so I’m not sure if some items are restricted …
No restrictions on face jewelry! And do your hair however you like it best!! Whatever makes you feel pretty and confident!

Good question! There aren’t any rules for dress colors! I’ve seen yellow dresses worn before! I think a muted yellow is fine, but I’d avoid anything super bright or neon. With a loud color like yellow, make sure the overall look is balanced and mature! Avoid dress styles that look too “prom” or juvenile ☺️

As far as I know, there aren’t any restrictions on guests with tattoos! This may be different across branches/units though, not sure!

I think burgundy sequins would be perfect!! Burgundy isn’t super loud. As long as the cut of the dress is classy, I think you’re good. One of my options for this year is burgundy sequins 😊 (USMC wife of 12 years).
