  • Back in 2014, we received a report of Ziwa’s heart-breaking plight when he was found bravely guarding his dying mum from curious and hungry hyenas.
Watch his rescue and find out how he's overcome recent health battles to become a thriving five-year-old bull who is continuing his journey back to the wild at our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit.
    Foster Ziwa today: www.thedswt.org/ziwa
Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

Thank you for saving him and not giving up on him. I'm sad that his friend Balguda wasn't as strong but glad to have been able to meet him too.

You make me feel like despite the odds, good people can still make a huge difference in this world. I can see how having the Umani Springs site is useful to send elephants who have health problems or healed injuries so they can still have alife of the herd and contact w wild elephants. Thank you for your great work. Adopting an elephant is just 50 dollars everybody...it feels great and they clearly make every dollar count. Finding your channel has gotten me through some dark days.

Ziwa is a wonderful elephant, protective and caring and a leader. Five years after this he is the first Umani orphan to return to the wild. Though he is happy with his wild friends, he returns often to be a gentle uncle to the younger dependant orphans. Most recently he took Kiombo out into the wild with him to show him the ropes. Kiombo later returned to the stockades, excited with the thrills of his wild safari, but not quite old enough to take the plunge. But what Ziwa teaches him in knowledge and experience will be of great help to Kiombo when he is ready. Ziwa was the first but now he is teaching the others. Stories like Ziwa's show why the extra cost and work to save a sick elephant is the gift that keeps on giving, it's so worth it not only for his own life, but all he will teach, protect and father. 💙💚💜

So in a country that had the highest infsnt mortality rate not to mention all the children without parents due to HiV , and extreme poverty. This organization has rhe resources to pick these animals up via orivate plane, and rush then to a vast amount of resources while all these children are dying around them.. Sounds pretty disgusting. Just keeo in mind especially my fellow Americans, you are heavly targets for fundraising. These litttle bsbies grow up to adults that require an enormous amouht of resources to live. They are alreadty startung yo violently invade villages and destroy crops and livestock. Please think hard before mailing that check. How many sick dyjng children would love the chance to ride on an airplane to get medical help and food? I nstead thst treatment is reserved for beasts of the field? Cmon we can do better people!! SMH

This is what DSWT is all about...from the October 2021Keeper Notes, "Ziwa is the exception. He has always been a lone ranger, very fond of his Keepers and fellow orphans, but happiest when doing his own thing. At the beginning of the month, he arrived after a very long absence. When he first approached the Umani babies, the Keepers thought he was a wild bull, because he looked so rugged and imposing. After witnessing his warm greeting with Lima Lima and Zongoloni, however, they suspected it was Ziwa. They were overjoyed when they called him by name and he responded!"
    Back in the wild..

I hope and trust Ziwa is still happy and thriving .. Thank you DSWT for going to all the trouble of diagnosing and treating him. The life of a single elephant (or any animal) is worth everything. I'm just so sad that poaching in this part of Africa still goes on, making orphans of many young elephants. Why anyone would want to buy ivory knowing where it comes from, is far beyond my understanding. I guess education is the answer.

Birgitte Roel Yes, I know. Ithumba and Tsavo East, in particular, is a wonderful place with a varied ecosystem. I was really just being a little unfair. Kauro had to go back to Nairobi because he got sick and there are plenty of other elephants that have been in the same situation. As far as I know only Ziwa and hopefully Kauro have healed, survived, and thrived.

Maybe that blood parasite was what took his mother ill. Maybe over time, it multiplied to the point that it overtook her, and later, nearly overtook her calf. This is why the antibiotics given her wouldn't have had any effect, and actually to the contrary, would have lowered her immune system, doing away with her healthy intestinal flora that IS the immune system. There are herbs that cleanse of parasites; that's worth studying for them.

Seriously, they put SO much regard and tenderness for their pandas, you'd think their humanitarianism would cross over and they'd understand what their greed for Ivory is doing to these magnificent beings! I hate the duplicity and hope some day, they will come to their senses about the Ivory trade and stop buying it!
