- Back in 2014, we received a report of Ziwa’s heart-breaking plight when he was found bravely guarding his dying mum from curious and hungry hyenas.
Watch his rescue and find out how he's overcome recent health battles to become a thriving five-year-old bull who is continuing his journey back to the wild at our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit.
Foster Ziwa today: www.thedswt.org/ziwa
Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

I've met Ziwa a couple times last year at umani , he is a survivor for sure with all he has been through. I'll get to see him again next June. I can't wait! Thank you for saving him and not giving up on him. I'm sad that his friend Balguda wasn't as strong but glad to have been able to meet him too.
will try to adopt an orphan elephant soon .🙂
admire you guys🐘👍
This is why funding is so important. All the keepers, the vets, the pilot, the Sheldricks, the ground teams etc worked hard to save him with great success. Bravo!
And he's such a handsome boy!
quadbox The most eligible bachelor out there...

Thank God and DSWT. Rock on, Ziwa!!
The Masai & their amazing native dress. It's just so bright & beautiful.
Being an elephant keeper is my dream job
Me, too! 💞🌾🐘💖🐘💖🐘🌾💞
BRAVO and ABUNDANT THANK and BLESSINGS to Dame Daphne, to their Veterinarians and the Lab that ID'd the blood parasite and to ALL YOU WONDERFUL CAREGIVERS and to the Masai for finding him + letting DSWT know so the rescue Ziwa!!!
BRAVO + LOVE 2u all 👍💞🐘💞✝️
I am going to give this wk...and will do occasionally. Next yr, hope to do monthly...Mungo Akubariki Sana! 💞
You are just the best organization, doing such incredible work. I am proud to have donated and hope to give more as soon as I can. Thank you for this video. The are so inspiring and moving. You make me feel like despite the odds, good people can still make a huge difference in this world. I can see how having the Umani Springs site is useful to send elephants who have health problems or healed injuries so they can still have alife of the herd and contact w wild elephants. Thank you for your great work. Adopting an elephant is just 50 dollars everybody...it feels great and they clearly make every dollar count. Finding your channel has gotten me through some dark days.
🌹🐘🌷😍☘🌻
I love you🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘😎😎😎😎❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
Something within me is helped sooo much when I watch these video's - i have big respect 4 all the keepers who've dedicated their live 2 helping these amazing gentle giant's..... I pray I'll get 2 meet them one day soon! Love isn't a big enough word 2 describe my adoration/appreciation 4 all of Mother Earths amazing creatures : )
once again a miracle for this baby who lost her mother !😢 it really difficult to watch all the steps these babies have to support to survive ! they are full of energy ! strength ! and they have a good recovery ! once again thank you to the Wheldrick family and all keepers carers Vet’s ! so many babies will return to the wild !!! 💕🐘💕🐘💕but they will always have 2 families elephant and humans they will never forget 🥰🤗💕😘💕🇫🇷
I sponsor Ziwa! Thank you to all of you that take care of him! I consider him my baby. This video was a wonderful surprise and an awesome treat to see "my" Ziwa! He's gotten so big! He looks so happy and healthy. You guys are angels.
Ziwa is a wonderful elephant, protective and caring and a leader. Five years after this he is the first Umani orphan to return to the wild. Though he is happy with his wild friends, he returns often to be a gentle uncle to the younger dependant orphans. Most recently he took Kiombo out into the wild with him to show him the ropes. Kiombo later returned to the stockades, excited with the thrills of his wild safari, but not quite old enough to take the plunge. But what Ziwa teaches him in knowledge and experience will be of great help to Kiombo when he is ready. Ziwa was the first but now he is teaching the others. Stories like Ziwa's show why the extra cost and work to save a sick elephant is the gift that keeps on giving, it's so worth it not only for his own life, but all he will teach, protect and father. 💙💚💜
I wonder how many sick, hungry children they flew over to rescue this Ziwa animal? I guess if you can feel good about your priorities Pfff! SMH
So in a country that had the highest infsnt mortality rate not to mention all the children without parents due to HiV , and extreme poverty. This organization has rhe resources to pick these animals up via orivate plane, and rush then to a vast amount of resources while all these children are dying around them.. Sounds pretty disgusting. Just keeo in mind especially my fellow Americans, you are heavly targets for fundraising. These litttle bsbies grow up to adults that require an enormous amouht of resources to live. They are alreadty startung yo violently invade villages and destroy crops and livestock. Please think hard before mailing that check. How many sick dyjng children would love the chance to ride on an airplane to get medical help and food? I nstead thst treatment is reserved for beasts of the field? Cmon we can do better people!! SMH
I love how the community comes to help! Wasn't long ago all the conflicts were happening. Bless you all.
Fantastic job !
(and nice video !!)
THANK GOD AND ALL OF THE MEN (ANGELS) WHO HELPED RECOVER THIS PRECIOUS BABY🐘❤
He's gonna be a big boy someday.
The herd at Umani Springs are all big! Healthy living. :) Hopefully Shukuru catches up in height eventually.
What a amazing story, he looks so handsome. You really do a wonderful job with all these baby ellies.
Heartbreaking sad, poor Ziwa :(((( Thank you for saving him XX
Thank you for saving him!!! 😘💜🙏😊🐘👏
This is what DSWT is all about...from the October 2021Keeper Notes, "Ziwa is the exception. He has always been a lone ranger, very fond of his Keepers and fellow orphans, but happiest when doing his own thing. At the beginning of the month, he arrived after a very long absence. When he first approached the Umani babies, the Keepers thought he was a wild bull, because he looked so rugged and imposing. After witnessing his warm greeting with Lima Lima and Zongoloni, however, they suspected it was Ziwa. They were overjoyed when they called him by name and he responded!"
Back in the wild..
Dswt.......hatsofff❤❤.....the team dr.keepers do hardwrk and very dedicated .......my heart is only one but dswt won it again and again👌👌❤❤❤❤❤
I cry.... tears of ultimate joy for the little guy! God Bless you all for the dedication and honoring these loving creatures!
I love the Masai people!
I hope and trust Ziwa is still happy and thriving .. Thank you DSWT for going to all the trouble of diagnosing and treating him. The life of a single elephant (or any animal) is worth everything. I'm just so sad that poaching in this part of Africa still goes on, making orphans of many young elephants. Why anyone would want to buy ivory knowing where it comes from, is far beyond my understanding. I guess education is the answer.
Oh thank god he pulled through! 😅😅😇
There aren’t words to express how good the work is that you do. Thank you.
once again, the red soil of the DSWT herd doing a really lovely effect here
Thank you for all that you do for these magnificent creatures.
Quite a journey! So glad to see Ziwa happy and healthy! What a booootiful elephant! I wonder if his illness is what claimed his mom...?
i love the music happy ziwa
Thank you all so much for your hardwork in keeping these animals safe and properly cared for.
Thank you to everyone at Sheldrick Trust for doing everything to keep him alive.
It’s cute how they walk in a straight line
Adorável o cuidado dessas pessoas com os animais.
All u who help these wonderful beautiful creatures are awesome! I truly luv u all!💖🐘😍🤩
❤️
So happy for this sweet boy, Ziwa. I love everyone that works to heal and comfort these orphaned elephants.
What a success story! I’m so glad they were able to determine what was making Ziwa ill. I wonder if that was the same parasite the mother had and she had inadvertently transferred to Ziwa or he got it the same way she did. God Bless Ziwa!
So much of work and concern to save little fella....u guys r doing efforts beyond limits. So happy to see h back on his feet. God Bless all the helpers and Sheldrick trust
This made me cry good we have people to help the babies.
I'm so glad this had a happy ending. For a moment, I was really worried.
SO HAPPY TO HEAR ZIWA IS ON THE MEND. May God bless you folk in service you provide to elephant orphans!!
I love you
I am so glad that he is healthy and happy now! Thank you for saving his life! God bless you all!😊😊😊❤️❤️❤️

awww...the way you all fight for each and every one of these elephants is so heart warming! Love all the elephants and all the ppl working so hard in all your places!...Thank you!...xoxoxox
Bellísimos animalitos, son una ternurita, me encantan, me apasionan, son preciosos!!! Los amo!!!
💕💕💕💕
I was worried there for a minute when I saw the title of this video. I've been reading the updates and I know that Ziwa is having way too much fun at Umani Springs. Good job Ziwa for hanging on to life and great job DSWT team for helping him heal! Bravo!
Now, I'm hoping Kauro moves here too instead of at Ithumba. I guess some elephants are just not that keen on being there. lol.
Dear God, me too... :)
TlanImass as they say he thrived fine untill he got a blood parasite, nothing to do with the place. Ithumba is a great place and been for decades.
Birgitte Roel Yes, I know. Ithumba and Tsavo East, in particular, is a wonderful place with a varied ecosystem. I was really just being a little unfair. Kauro had to go back to Nairobi because he got sick and there are plenty of other elephants that have been in the same situation. As far as I know only Ziwa and hopefully Kauro have healed, survived, and thrived.
Anett How are the 2 that are still with the wild herd? How is the one that was returned home?
Balguda also returned from umani back in 2016 I met him after his return to the nursery. They tried very hard to save him.
HERMOSOS!! Me encantan lis elefantes!!!
wish I could romp around with them!
Touching to see the very somber concern of the Masai tribe for Zombie and her calf. They wear such beautiful, brightly colored clothing. Conservation has to in some way include the future of the African people. They are part of this great land.
Thanks God! He made it! But there were so many others that died. Daphne said once that she cried bukets of tears. I am sure she did. What a special person! If I could ever talk to her I would ask, how can you go on with so much pain. She said once: the others need us. But still.......going on with broken heart, how does this work?
😍😍😍😍😍😍
👏👏👏👏👏👏
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
😍💕😘😘
I wonder if Ziwa’s mother had the same parasite that killed her (if Ziwa was still nursing.)❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️🐘
beautiful video
I wonder if the Mom had the same blood disorder as Zika?
😭😭😭
Maybe that blood parasite was what took his mother ill. Maybe over time, it multiplied to the point that it overtook her, and later, nearly overtook her calf. This is why the antibiotics given her wouldn't have had any effect, and actually to the contrary, would have lowered her immune system, doing away with her healthy intestinal flora that IS the immune system. There are herbs that cleanse of parasites; that's worth studying for them.
Bad enough he lost his Mumma. Then to go through all he went through after 😣 poor boy. But look now. SWT rule ok!! 🐘 ☆☆
Why I donate to SWT🐘🐘🐘
Are these elephants suffering from pythiosis? The signs they show point to that. There are labs in the US who can test for it and an immunotherapy has been developed to treat pithyosis.
😢😢😢
the uqbeat jazz is far less annoying than the tyqical haqqy animal video music
No trees anywhere near... 😰
Recebendo sangue tadinha afff 😍♩🌨🌧🎶🎵🎼👧
I wonder if that is what his mother died from.
If Daphne Sheldrick isn't an angel sent by the heavens, I don't what is! The Asian should be ashamed. Seriously, they put SO much regard and tenderness for their pandas, you'd think their humanitarianism would cross over and they'd understand what their greed for Ivory is doing to these magnificent beings! I hate the duplicity and hope some day, they will come to their senses about the Ivory trade and stop buying it!
Wondering if it is this mysterious blood parasite that took his mother's life? So sad to see him lose her but so happy to see him survive and thrive. ☺️
