The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I saw the Spoonful regularly when they were a Village Bar Band at the Night Owl Cafe. Love them from the start. Yeh. I'm old.
Thats awesome!
Unless you're a Sage, Age doesn't count!!! As long as the music is young, we are young!! From '62 to '69, I went from 5th grade to high school grad. My life's soundtrack was forged IN FIRE during those years, and that same soundtrack is still my go-to comfort food! Oh, I've added many gems to it from the '70s to the 21st century, but check it out, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Stones(still touring 60 years), Led Zepplin, Eric Clapton, anything from Motown -fuck, the list goes on and on- All as relevant today as they were back when!! Still scoopin' up new crops of fans daily!! You get the point!! Excuse me, but I get wound up easily. Be young, my friend...

They were such a wonderful blend of folk, pop, and rock. A nice American response to the British Invasion. It's hard not to smile when hearing them.
Indeed ! I remember sitting on my friends back porch, with several other young friends, playing records on her portable record player. The Lovin' Spoonful were just some of those we listened to. The 'old neighbour' from next door ( who was probably only in his 30s !!) came over to listen, too. He was a hobby musician himself
( guitar player ) and he knew good music when he heard it.

I love the shot when the puppy makes a brief appearance!
I stood next to John Sebastian at Los Angeles International Airport just before he flew with The Lovin' Spoonful were on the Ed Sullivan Show in New York. John wore some fairly high top boots with about six inches of fur at their tops and wearing those 60's round glasses. I was just a young kid in elementary school but it left a memory in my mind I still have today. 🔥🎸🎸🎸🎶🎵🎶. Yes I Believe in Magic 😌
lucky bastard
KOOL MEMORY! JOHN WAS ALWAYS WITH DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS THAN THE OTHER BANDS.
It's funny how people remember being around celebrities, especially if they were kids when it happened. I remember seeing the members of Earth, Wind, & Fire at the baggage claim in the airport in Lexington, KY, back in the late 70s. The memory is still vivid, even though there was no story other than that I stood near them for a couple minutes!
Michael Anderson And fun! I thought I was a hippie in 1969🤣. Turns out I was a 17 year old kid with no idea what a hippie was! Good times🤷🏻♂️
@@briteness I wish POC still made that kind of music
Brilliant.
My first concert in 1965 The Beach Boys, The Lovin’ Spoonful and Peter and Gordon...!!!! What a FabTasTic lineup...!!!!
mine was Ricky nelson in 1960 on the Atlantic City Steel pier , my dad took me and I sat on his shoulders to see !
The lineup I saw on 1965 tour was Chad and Jeremy opening not Peter and Gordon, followed by The Lovin' Spoonful and then headlining, the Beach Boys.
Well it was 1965, memory serves me a little different. It was October 65 in Houston,Tx you may be correct. It was a great show. Thanks for you input.
And I bet the tickets - for a good seat - were less than $10 , too !!! I paid $5.50 to see the Beatles in Toronto in 1966. Bobby Hebb and The Circle were the 'warm up' groups. Those were the days, my friend.
Are you sure it was Peter and Gordon? I see that same concert bill in Florida in the same year, but it was Chad and Jeremy instead of Peter and Gordon. I guess they could have done a different opening act for half the concerts. Mine was more like Spring of 65.
This song is an absolute banger. They were so ahead of their time. This song works in any generation.
I was 15 when I first heard this song, 3 months after my mum died and was instantly consumed by the music of this band, especially this tune, have played it literally a thousand times and will always regard it as my favourite. John Sebastian is a genius.

The special effects are mind blowing.
I believe a lot of the effects and switches were filmed earlier. When Ed introduced the band, he told the audience they had to watch the monitor to see the special effects. It was definitely backing track but not sure if John's vocals were live.

PLEASE POSTTHE SPOONFULL'S ED SULIVAN PERFORMANCE OF "DARLING BE HOME SOON". It was beautiful. They had a string section on stage with them. Even the parents were impressed.
Never heard this song In years, brilliant 🎉
I met John Sebastian a few years ago when he was playing in my hometown theatre. Got a pic with him. He really seemed like a socially awkward person, even in the Woodstock movie. But man, this guy put out some of the best music ever.
I think I remember seeing this original telecast. I was about 16
Love how John Sebastian plays the autoharp like Mother Maybelle Carter....magic.
Zal Yanovski is the most..facinating stage presence, manerisms, and facial expressions. A lot is going on in his noggin while he plays on his Guild S-200 Thunderbird guitar. A very underated guitarist who can play many styles of music. Robert at 67..
The guitar playing by Zal is the best part of the song. That is my opinion!
All time guitar hero!
I'm surprised this song was never a hit in the UK it's one of my favourite Lovin Spoonful songs
Oldie Goldie :)
Summer in the city was the first 45 record I ever bought I mowed lawns that summer with an old push mower to get the money. It was a truly magical time
Here in England we love the Beatles, but certainly Loving Spoonful comes very near to them. Great group.
Beatles wrote Good Day Sunshine as an answer song to Spoonfuls Daydream!
Good show mate!
I was just thinking about this, I think the groups are somewhat analogous. Both were excellent and built on the musical history of their respective cultures, Beatles focusing more on the classical world and the Loving Spoonful focusing on the folk music of America.
One group other than the Beatles that I regret never seeing was Creedence Clearwater Revival. Of course they were years later,
but they were great.
@@marcarturi2137 didn't know that.

Yes, there is magic in a young girls heart. I pity any man, young or old that can't feel it. We men can never share it but we can appreciate and cherish it.
That was so sweet to say. Thank you Sir. 🙏🏻
We men have magic in our hearts too, if we let it sing.
One shudders to imagine what inhuman thoughts are behind that mask
With hair getting gray, it is difficult to imagine that this was 6 months before I was born. 1967 was just a fantastic year with the best music and the year the most handsome men were born ;)
'Summer in the City'
I was a little kid, and that song started my career in music.
Ya..that tune is their Stairway to Heaven signature song. Robert at 69.
Hey I am old too. What a different world.
This song is part of my music story. From 1967 through now.
This was their best, IMHO
I throw the "Spoonful" in the same class as "The Animals". Not because of the style of music they did, but because you could always depend on them constructing well crafted, well performed "pop" gems...........and they never quite made it to the pinnacle of popularity ( Beatles, Stones).
But man, they sure made GREAT music.
Great...can't get songs like this today...
I like the Lovin' Spoonful, because they made very happy and upbeat music. Fabulous band. May Zal Yanofsky rest in peace. I'm hoping that Darling Be Home Soon will be uploaded in the future. Cheers!
Yeah, " darling be home soon." Is by far their best song.
This is one of the perfect songs - perfect for the time and place.
I dare anyone to find a 2 and a half minute song that sums up "Rock and Roll" more than this one!! You can;t not love this!
I like the monkey with the badge and alien sticker on his guitar . He knows something more than the others.
This simple song is a masterpiece. I also love the clever guitar piece in the middle. So much better than the music garbage of today!
John Sebastian is a truly wonderful singer! Loved this group back in the day... 💙🖤💙🖤💙
This song was magic beautiful
What a nice song
What a masterpiece.
While the Beatles & Stones were getting the majority of the attention the Kinks were doing their thing at a very high level. I've been a huge fan since I first heard that classic riff in You Really Got Me.

I meet the Spoonful through Steve Boone’s brother who was a school mate of mine at Westhampton Beach HS. My band and I actually helped to setup and break down the bands equipment when they played at Queens College in New York, on one occasion. I would once and awhile drive Mark Sebastian to school when John lived in an A frame home in East Quogue, Long Island, NY.
Great song from a great band. I liked the cameo by the dog! The Lovin’ Spoonful is probably the only rock band from the 1960s whose frontman (John Sebastian) played an autoharp.
