The moment in the series that redeemed Hohenheim's character for me. When I first watched the series I wasn't a huge fan of him, but this scene right here shows why he had to leave before the series began. It doesn't necessarily excuse the whole sudden departure from his son's lives for a decade without saying goodbye, but at the very least it showed he had a legitimate and necessary reason for going.
You have to remember though that Hohenheim is an ancient person. At almost half a millennium old it's remarkable he still functions. The human psyche isn't designed to endure so many years. It's a surprise he hasn't gone insane after that length of time. I think we can forgive the way he treated his family.

It was likely that their desire to defeat Father was what allowed Hohenheim to endure all those years, and then he met Trisha, who made him feel truly alive once more.
When he drops that he's using the eclipse's shadow as the transmutation circle I absolutely lost it, such a smart choice by the writer honestly. The author was crazy good at understanding how her world worked.
That's what makes FMA the greatest. The world isn't used to tell the story, she just told the story within her own world. So many mangas use the "mechanics" of the world they've built to just do asspulls when they write themselves into a corner. This is one of, if not the most carefully constructed manga stories of all time. No stone is left unturned.
When this was said I realized she thought of this exact moment before she started writing the show. It’s an absolute beautiful climax and I think the best I’ve seen in any anime
Although there is no definitive proof, people are fairly positive that this isn't the originally planned ending to the manga/anime. And that the orginal one was more akin to FMA's 2003 anime ending

It really makes sense why only Hohenheim could do this, and why he had to leave home to do it. When he discovered the nationwide transmutation circle, he knew that once it was active, every living soul not in the center would die as their souls would be ripped out of their bodies. But to reverse it, some souls had to act in order to activate the reversal process, so what better than to use the souls that Hohenheim managed to individualize. Father wouldn't be able to take those souls because they aren't inside any bodies, and thus cannot be pulled out. And it took him so long, because Hohenheim had to calculate EXACTLY where to place each pinpoint that would coincide with the Umbra. Do you know how tough that it? And Van didn't have advanced technology to help him. No, he used purely his own intellect. Not even the most brilliant scientists could have done that with just their intellect alone. Hohenheim's 400 year of acquiring knowledge came in useful. So its mostly because of Hohenheim and his friends that resided in him that are the real heroes, as otherwise, they would have lost.
I love how this scene is born from the Ainu's religion. The Ainu are the ethnic minority to whom the Ishvalians are based on. Arawaka wanted to general prejudice of religious and ethnic groups with the Ishvalians. But, in this scene, we see spirits existing in nature. I love how the Ainu's believe is what saved Amestres. Makes this scene more awesome to me .

I can't really give you another series like it since there aren't any that come close to it but Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gurren Lagann, Cowboy Bebop, Berserk, Hellsing Ultimate, Attack on TItan are some of my favourites. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is supposed to be good as well but I havent fully watched it yet.
No anime could ever widen my eyes seeing this. The fact hohenhiem spent his years to save an entire country from forever being trapped made him my favorite character in the whole series. His patience is what's truly godlike in this series.
Rift Walk Yeah, I mean when it comes to saving people, you have to give logical credit to whoever's most responsible for that when thrown along with intent. But yes it's always good for stories to have a diverse character system. I'm actually writing a book like that myself.

When the realization kicked in that the souls from Hohenheim's Stone were going to sacrifice themselves to restore Amestris's citizens, and the young voice announces "we're going now, Hohenheim!" That gets me as bad as the baby's first cry.
This is one of the very anime shows I absolutely prefer most of the English cast. Terrific work by these respectful actors and actresses. Who agrees with me?
Hohenheim was a good character was biggest shock for me as from starting he was appearing like villianous nature but then slowly i realize he was the saviour
For added irony to this scene make everyone metal. But in all seriousness, it's ironic as hell that Father spent his whole life in pursuit of his own selfish plans, sacrificing anyone and everyone to see them come to fruition, yet it's his *only* selfless deed (giving Hohenheim his immortality) that screwed him over in the end.
Wasnt really selfless, he did make a promise to give him three things in return for him helping him. He first gives him a name, he then gives him knowledge so he can be a free man and alchemist and lastly he gives him half the souls in return for having a body and being free of the flask. After that they part ways and he sometimes after sheds his emotions to be a "perfect being". The dwarf was selfish from the start, he just likes Hohenheim because it was his blood who gave him the chance to be in the flask and away from the truth realm.
To be fair, he needed someone to carry him to the center of the circle. It may have been unavoidable and at that point would you really risk your newly acquired 'immortality' on a fight? I would chalk it more up to arrogance than selflessness.

You cannot tell me this wasn't... isn't one of the best stories in any form ever. Everything up to this point and what little was left after was so damn perfect. I am so thankful they redid the anime. 10/10, would watch again and again.
Here’s a reminder: Since they were just above Father and the five alchemists, Riza Hawkeye, the Chimeras and Scar (and according to the wiki, Lan Fan) were in the centre of the circle as well, so they were able to keep their souls. In the manga, there was even a panel where Riza and the Chimeras witness all the souls escaping.

This was actually foreshadowed in the first episode of Season 1 when Issac Mcdougall's circle goes away and it shows Father closing his eyes. (At least that is what I believe is the reason behind that scene from the first episode of Season 1)
I think this shows just how different the Dwarf and Hohenheim's ways of thinking are. The Dwarf is a proud fool that truly believes he should be the one to control everything, instead of accepting the way the world works, he actively tries to morph it into something that serves him. He is completely uncertain of anything but his own ability, so he uses a part of himself (Sloth) to carve a transmutation circle. Hohenheim on the other hand, a man who is humble and understands the beauty arounds him, relies on the way the world currently is to balance fate in his favor. Instead of rejecting the world, he lets it help him, and is all the more powerful for it
Literally started tearing up when that baby cries. Such excellent timing with the music the brief pause that felt like eternity when you first watched it. You knew the reverse transmutation worked; you saw it, but having that audio confirmation was so powerful.
the fact hohenheim learned the name of every soul in his body...He spent so much time paying for Fathers actions and punishing himself, makes you forget the hatred you had for him, and just be happy he got to witness his boys grown up and save the world and finally free from watching everyone he knows and love grow old and die without him.

The beast from beyond the veil may have eaten millions souls, and may have consuned God... But Hohenheim freed thoses souls, he made God's escape only a matter of time. Ultimately, he was the main reason behind the cast win. He fucking slayed that beast.

Every discussion about why father lost always goes to a philosophical meaning that he could not logically absorb god. But in fact to me it was simpler as: because Hohenheim set a trap spell on father's circle. Thats all. No philosophy, no "strong god / weak vessel". Just pure counterforce.

This moment is so perfect. From the dichotomy between Father (manipulation of others) and Hoenheim (co-operation and teamwork with the souls inside himself), to the silence until the baby starts crying, leading into the last OP playing overtop the scene. It's actually a masterpiece.

ComradeSlice When all those souls got ripped out of Father's body he lost about 99% of his godly powers. There were still his usual things he could do, like the "You can't transmute" move, the stupid barrier, and of course, energy attacks. He just couldn't create the Sun in his hand anymore (let alone contain the damned thing), because that requires a good portion of his godly powers. With 99% of it gone, he no longer had sufficient energy to duplicate that feat, and was consequently forced into defense mode.

The reason for this is because the cast is mostly the same from the 03 adaptation so most of the cast wheee extremely familiar with there characters

This was actually foreshadowed in the first episode of Season 1 when Issac Mcdougall's circle goes away and it shows Father closing his eyes. (At least that is what I believe is the reason behind that scene from the first episode of Season 1)

I think this shows just how different the Dwarf and Hohenheim's ways of thinking are. The Dwarf is a proud fool that truly believes he should be the one to control everything, instead of accepting the way the world works, he actively tries to morph it into something that serves him. He is completely uncertain of anything but his own ability, so he uses a part of himself (Sloth) to carve a transmutation circle. Hohenheim on the other hand, a man who is humble and understands the beauty arounds him, relies on the way the world currently is to balance fate in his favor. Instead of rejecting the world, he lets it help him, and is all the more powerful for it

Literally started tearing up when that baby cries. Such excellent timing with the music the brief pause that felt like eternity when you first watched it. You knew the reverse transmutation worked; you saw it, but having that audio confirmation was so powerful.

jfc the ending shot of the soul re-entering the baby, angled up so we can’t see inside the pram, the suspenseful pause, then the cry to close out the episode and show hope is restored… and I completely forgot it existed because the show offers thousands of brilliant visual ideas. ComradeSlice When all those souls got ripped out of Father's body he lost about 99% of his godly powers. There were still his usual things he could do, like the "You can't transmute" move, the stupid barrier, and of course, energy attacks. He just couldn't create the Sun in his hand anymore (let alone contain the damned thing), because that requires a good portion of his godly powers. With 99% of it gone, he no longer had sufficient energy to duplicate that feat, and was consequently forced into defense mode.
