this is one of the best details they put in this game i remember going to catholic school and being taught the old testament and whenever we were reading it aloud to the class and saw the word "yahweh" we were instructed by the monk who was our teacher to instead say "the lord" because mortal men were not allowed to say his name
"yahweh" is really just the best and widely-accepted guess because ancient hebrew didn't denote vowel sounds
But even he cannot say it... Hmm.
@@hitkid2456 Less that he can't say it, more that we can't hear it
Eso son tonterias y frikadas el nombre de Dios se sabe su significado pero quienes no saben no comprenden
True, even I called Lord because as Catholic player it offense me even having evil thoughts to myself I want forgiveness but this game is just fictional so Lord only
Man this *record scratch* guy sure is popular.
He should really be a DJ at a club
Ah, that's a decent description of the sound effect.
For some reason, I picture someone fiddling with the zipper on a windbreaker jacket whenever I hear that sound.
So popular you can make a religion out of it

"Gaston is a... Gaston is a (record scratch)"

That feeling when the DJ does a trick:
You know, if the law and chaos endings weren't treated as early game endings, maybe this game wouldn't be as heavily panned by the fanbase. Cause i honestly like this game more than the 1st SMT IV.
I feel like it would have been really great if there was a Divine Powers path and ending.
The game was trying to establish itself with options beyond Finns story, so I didnt mind that it sidestep law/chaos.
Even 4 flirted with moving past those two with The White. I feel like the "good" ending was just a bit too sweet for SMT, which might not have been that bad if it wasnt just one of a mere TWO true endings.
I like them both equally. I really really like 4's neutral ending and the story's tone in general, but Apocalypse just gets insane (in a good way) with how over the top the stakes get and I really like the Divine Powers.
I thought people mostly derided Apocalypse because the tone of the peace ending is too happy and they don't like the "power of friendship" message. I feel like the peace ending was really satisfying and I thought it was less the power of friendship and more that humanity is able to come together and rely on each other to overcome problems, in contrast to relying on deities, which has been part of the message of the neutral routes of most of the SMT games I've played.
The game has good ideas and concepts and its Anarchy ending has a really cool message to it, however I wouldn't really think that even actual law or chaos endings or a divine powers path could save how terrible the writing is.
@@yoso378 Peace ending was shit, they're still relying on demons and stuff by the end of it, so clearly once again the problem of depending on deities has only been postponed and it will come back to bite them in the ass later. Really the only problem that was solved was that the people of Tokyo can go above ground again, which was solved better in IV anyways with the complete removal of the firmament in that game. Overall the peace ending feels like a watered down, not as good version of IV's Neutral ending I'd say.
Honestly, law and chaos being early "bad endings" only scratches the surface of it
The main reason apocalypse sucks is because it plays out more like a Persona game in it's plot, people rant about friendship and ignore the entirely valid points made by the beings they oppose. The game doesn't let you think for yourself at any point and will just tell you what the good ending is through hamfisted dialogue, which can ironically have the inverse effect for someone like me, laughing manically as they slaughter their friends while they scream about how evil my actions are.
Meanwhile, SMT IV lets you see for yourself. Sure, people will voice their points and oppose you, but they aren't morally superior or anything of the like. They're just people speaking their minds. Lucifer would still seek to make Mikado and Tokyo a purely chaotic hellhole. Merkabah still seeks to commit Genocide. Isabeau is doing her best, but it's only for now, in an unstable and uncertain world, that their future lies. The white see all of that, and beg of you, the messiah, to end all of that suffering. And if you do not wish to believe in the future, the game will not judge you for ending all things. It will just let you take the course of action you chose. The right answer is what you, the player, observe and put your belief into. That's how a game like this should be. That's what makes Shin Megami Tensei special.
Always wondered, was this Censored or just how it's intended to be a record scratch? YHVH could have been pronounced as Why-age-Vay-Age
Different way of fading out the pronunciation. English dub has the record scratch, while Japanese audio has some sort of other sound to mask the voice actors actually saying it.
the record scratch does sound like Yaweh
I assumed it was because no one can decide how to pronounce the name of God, so it's just scratched out.
The name of god is unpronouncable. That is what these are meant to reference
@@CountXDracula Naoya from devil survivor can pronounce it if i remember correctly
I always thought the humam characters should just say Yaweh or Jehova since they cant actually pronounce the Tetragrammaton
but lately ive realized its just another hint that all humans in smt 4, unlike humans in the other games, are part demon
With 20~ years under a dome of stone and demons running rampant, crossbreeding is not out of the ordinary. Hallelujah is proof.
now that i think about it THAT does make sense considering that in Devil Survivor they actually say His name
@@Windermed Yehovah isn't the proper pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton.
NO ONE knows what God's true name is.
That's not entirely true, the humans from the eastern kingdom of mikado specifically are part demon, the humans from tokyo are just normal joes. It's implied flynn and company are able to cast actual magic due to that, while people from tokyo fight like the main characters of smt 1 and 2, in that they don't have access to magic and their demons does most of the heavywork.

Shin Megami Tensei YHVH Survivor IV Record Scratcher
Gee Luigi this Yiff guy sure is popular.
It's funny cause you see, it's forbidden to speak the name of god, specifically that name and they masked it nicely
*RECORD SCRATCHING*
Good. Now replace every record scratch with Spongebob's dolphin noises
I love this as a symbolic gesture. For one thing, imagine the shitstorm this game would get for all these characters talking about killing YHVH and actually hearing the name said aloud, religious groups would probably boycott the thing, but more importantly, it's purely symbolic when you take into account that YHVH, or the hebrew characters "Yod Heh Vod Heh" isn't actually a name. It's a declaration made by God, "I am he who is" or as he says in this game "I am that I am". If he has a true name, it's likely beyond human comprehension, let alone pronunciation. So when you think about it, the *text* is the true "censor", replacing the audio we can't comprehend with understandable text...
...Or I could be completely wrong about literally all of this, I'm not a theologian. Hell, I'm not even religious! I'm just going off bits of trivia I've picked up that I might not even be remembering right in the first place. Take everything with a pound of salt.
I mean, the fact that the premise is attacking and dethroning God AT ALL should be enough to earn people's ire.
Why not a pillar of salt?

Oh the record scratch wasnt edited in?
The game (even in Japanese) just doesn't have audio for YHVH's name because it's supposed to be unpronounceable. The English version added the record scratch and I believe the Japanese just had the voice acting mute when it was said.
Yes, it's actually in the game. The record scratch.
Every single time someone says YHVH it's replaced by that.
Even when he speak about himself.
And in the Medusa battle, a line of hers is censored.
Not changed in translation, not un-voiced or skipped over, literally bleeped over.

Johne was the only person who choose that option (from what I found)
I think it's hilarious that the one censored lines in SMT is from a minor boss early in the game.
Caught me off guard in my first playthrough.
(not sure about the Japanese version. But it is censored in the English version.)
@@potatistatis6709 Medusa's long cussing tantrum is pretty much bleeped out for comedic effect.
In japanese they use a wind sound effect that sounded different most of the time.
His name is ironically enough pronounced "yod heh vav heh"
I was surprised at how different the sound was from the Japanese version. I don't know why they did it, but the English version is funny.
I like that halfway through the scratch changes, and then after that you can start to hear the characters say ...weh.

But like seriously who else thinks the Divine Powers aren’t really bad guys? Like, even before SMT I thought they’d make a sick alliance, but SMT shows it’s not really a too-bad concept because I also thought Tsukuyomi made a good argument for chaos-but-like-more humane alignments!
Honestly, the Chaos ending is the best one in SMT5. The alternatives are the same issues as YHVH’s Reign, leaving the world in utter Chaos or rejecting the existence of an entire species including those who helped you throughout your entire journey. I thought SMT couldn’t surprise me anymore but then they made the neutral endings more extreme than the Law and Chaos ones.
@@trutyatces8699 I definitely agree with that. The most glaring flaw is that the game makes it sound morally correct to wipe all demons from existence, including the proto fiend that was key to MCs survival AND Yakumos surrogate mother/lover, Nuwa. It's like come on did this script even get scrutinized??
Granted, the devs could have made Chaos lool more compelling by giving us time to spend with the gods that werent complete dicks at the Summit (Odin and Zeus clearly wouldn't cooperate, but Khonsu legit cares for humanity's wellbeing, AND he was the only chief god wanting to help another human without expecting anything in return.)
Loved playing the game, but omg these flaws as really bad.
bro, I'm on YHVH's side. the Divine Powers can burn in Hell.

Dunno why it's like "censored", even in japanese. It's as easy as saying "Yahveh" lol
It's done that way because the true pronunciation of the Abrahamic God's name has been lost to time. We only know that involved four consonant symbols interpreted as anywhere from 'YHWH' (usually said as Yahweh) to 'JHVH' (usually said as Jehovah), with 'YHVH' being just one interpretation itself. Treating it as lost to time or forbidden to hear is therefore a neat history reference that sidesteps taking any sides on the matter.
because christianity says "mememe dont give hod a name mememe"
@@Rmuda Jehovah has been confirmed as an incorrect translation. It has even been removed from all modern editions of the Bible, except for the Bibles of some cults like The Watchtower/Jehovah's witness.
@@elk3407 There is indeed a consensus that Jehovah isn't the correct pronunciation, but that doesn't stop people like Jehovah's Witnesses from using it anyway, so it's at least worth pointing out its existence. I should have clarified that it's probably not legitimate, though, and that JHVH is more commonly used to interpret the Tetragrammaton in other languages, I'll admit.
