I'm 54 (ugh) & I've been playing w McDermott cues since I could reach a table standing on a stool. Maybe 4 or 5 yrs old. I still have my first one made in 1970 by Jim himself- its still straight as an arrow, I use it once in a while but I seldom take it out. I have about 8 other McDermott cues, none if them very fancy, just kinda plain Jane types. No matter how cheap or expensive, every single one of them play fantastic! I've left them in the trunk for months. Ive lived in Phoenix where its extremely hot and dry. I lived in San Diego where its very humid at times... I see ppl go banas to protect their cues from bad weather and I laughed. My cues have taken more abuse than a red headed step child and they're all still ad good as new! Sure there are some better cues out there. You can spend A LOT more money, but you won't get a lot better cue... Spend 10 - 15 times the money and only get a little better product? Not for me... Especially these days when everything has gotten so ridiculous expensive.
Thanks for sharing, always good to hear from a McDermott fan! Their cues are indeed amongst the best there are - and also made in the USA (for McDermott branded cues) which seems to be getting rarer and rarer these days. Great stuff!

What do you have against red headed step children? JK.
Do you have any advice as to which McDermott pool cue that you like the best? 2:52
@cjh4427 make sure you get one made in America with a lifetime warranty! I have very old ones- from the early 70s, and some that are only a couple years old. What city are you in? Is there a dealer nearby that will have a few you can try out?
@@markcatanzaro9699
I'm in the outskirts of Seattle Washington.
@cjh4427 is there a store around where you can try some or maybe try a pool hall, and find someone who has one and see if they'll let you try it out- you'll probably make a friend in the process
Thank you for the review. I just purchased the star s72.
Good choice, and thank you for your support! 👍
I played a lot of pool when I was younger. I started on a Player's cue and my mother got me a Lucasi for my birthday when I was 14. I played avidly into my early twenties but kind of put it down. This Christmas she again got me a cue, this time a McDermott Star S72. I was very surprised at the quality and shot of a relatively low range cue. So much so in fact. I bought a G Core shaft used for it and it is still my main playing cue. I intend to get a Defy shaft for it, that's how much I like it. I can't recommend them enough as a good amateur cue.
That's great to hear! Agreed, the Star really impressed us with what you're getting for what you're paying. They are very solid cues 👍
Thanks.... very informative
Thank you :-)

I bought this cue because of this review. I'm used to shooting with a 650 dollar cue but the pin got damaged and body is warped so I want to see how this one compares
Hope you enjoy the cue, and interesting to see how well it compares to your old $650 cue 👍

Thank you. I learned a lot about evaluating a cue. I'm thinking about getting a table. I had a 9' Brunswick some years ago and liked it. Do you do reviews on used tables? I would like to know what to look for. regards, leo
I had a Brunswick Gold Crown 3. Awesome table. You can pick these up super cheap used these days, I got mine for $300. people just want them out of the house. Put Simonis cloth on it, and you have one of the best tables in the world. I like them better than Diamond tables with Simonis cloth.
Thanks for your kind words and support! I hope you go ahead and get yourself that new table!! We have not done a guide to used pool tables, but it is something that we have considered actually. Maybe in the future! Thanks again!

Yes, the Gold Crown's are considered amongst the best tables out there, and you can get lucky and get them super-cheap. Lots of them around in the US, so if you're looking for a used table then a Gold Crown should ALWAYS be on your list of options!!!
Star's are good but upgrading to a G- Core shaft will produce a huge improvement. But, honestly, a Cuetec with an Avid shaft is a better bargain. They give you a s softer hit with all the benefits a low deflection shaft without having to spend an additional $180 to upgrade.
Thanks for the input! Yes, the Star cue really surpassed our expectations, it's a great cue. We have confirmation that we'll soon be reviewing the G Core series by McDermott. Additionally, we'd definitely love to take an in-depth look at the Avid series by Cuetec. We've not spent any real time on one, but hear lots of praise on the Avid shafts. Hopefully we can pull together a review for Cuetec's Avid as well soon! Thanks again!

I wanna see the avid video 👍🏽👍🏽☺️
I have not played with a Cuetec Cue but if you can get a G Core shaft for your Star for around $100 used, you can have yourself a very high quality for a competitive price. it's what I did.
You overlooked the thickness of the steel joint collar. Some cue makers chintz out with a thin collar. Basically just for show.
Yes, that's a fair point. They can vary in quality!

Years ago I purchased a Star SG-1 three-piece cue because it would fit in my motorcycle saddle bag. I like it so much that I wanted to buy another, only to find that this cue has been discontinued.😢 Does anyone know where I could find one? Thank you.
Unfortunately it may be a case of regularly scouring eBay and playing the waiting game for a used one to come up. Best of luck!! 👍

An old original McDermott cue has another use.
I roll mine across the table,
to see if the table is flat.
Or if your cue is warped
@@tvm2209 you missed the point
McDermott's don't warp even after 20yrs

All of the wood was aged for 3yrs before being used.
So when he bought the wood he had to plan three years ahead to meet sales projections.
Can you use a g core shaft on a star McDermott, butt without it affecting the performance, thnkz
Yes, the joint size is the same between Star and McDermott (3/8x10 joint) so G Core shaft would fit a Star butt. Hope that helps!

Hi, will the g core shaft fit a star cue perfectly? Thank you so much
They use the same joint size and so yes they are compatible. Manufacturers usually recommend sending the cue to them to ensure a perfect match to a new shaft. Hope that helps!

Yes. I have a G Core on my S72
i prefer H series VBP with i pro slim shaft, i think this is worth to buy than other series of Mc dermot, or at least G seris with G core shaft..
Yes, the H Series is a great cue. And the G Core is very popular too. I can confirm that we will running reviews on both of these models soon 👍
I realize I'm a little late to this vid, You said this is a 3/8 X10 Joint, Does it screw directly into wood? Or into a metal insert? Had a dark brown woodgrain (no inlay's) McDermott with the white Nylon piece where the silver collar is, which was the same thread and screwed into wood. lost it a long time ago many regrets there and a long story. Anyways, I want another McDermott screws into wood joint, Are these star Cues screws into wood? I have never liked metal inserts in my Cue Shafts. Thank you and sorry for the ramble caught this vid and wanted to post before i forgot
Never too late! This video should be around for a good while yet! On this Star cue there is a metal insert in the shaft which the joint screws into. It is metal to metal, not metal to wood as you were looking for. Hope that helps!

@@AverageJoesPool, Honestly I've been shooting pool in some way since i started walking. I'm in my 50's now, but not been regularly shooting for a few years, the last cue i had screwed into wood and i loved it, consistent accurate and never bent tweaked or anything. I just loved the simplicity of the joint, less to wear out and loosen up as well as cheaper to replace the shaft if necessary. And thank you for the heads up on the joint construction, I found a Viper Naturals cue in exactly what i want with supposedly a wood to wood joint for a similar price point
It screws into the wood.

Noticed it looked like u used this on the break. How do these hold up for a single stick opposed to having a separate break stick?
Yes, breaks perfectly well for a playing cue. A dedicated break cue *should* always offer better performance (at breaking) as they are specifically designed to only do one job, with a stronger/thicker shaft profile and phenolic tip (generally), as opposed to the playing cue whose principal job is to play rather than just break. But yes, it definitely breaks a-ok for a playing cue! Hope this helps! 🙂

@@scottking6662 Awesome, you won't be dissapointed, it's a great cue! Hopefully yours will come fitted with the Everest tip, as ours did. That tip it a great match for this shaft, so hopefully that's what you'll have on yours 🙂
@@scottking6662how is it
Is the s1 good choice? I shoot pool occasionally
Having been very impressed with the S13 we featured here, I would imagine that the S1 would indeed be a good choice (but I have not tried it in person unfortunately). They also do the S67 and S69 which are identical (price and design) to the S1 but finished in Blue and Red respectively (with the S1 being brown). All three are their 'Hustler' cues, so essentially Sneaky Pete's. The most notable difference between these and the S13 featured here would be the wood to wood joint. Sneaky Pete's tend to have these so they have a 'basic' look and appear as a single piece house cue. Hope that helps!

I bought a STAR Sneaky Pete about 6 months ago. I played with an '84 C10 McDermott most of my 65 years. The only thing I'm dissatisfied with on the STAR is the joint. It's nowhere near as solid as a regular McDermott joint. In fact I have to check it once in a while to make sure it stays tight.
Thanks for sharing your experiences! Is that the Star Hustler you have, with the wood to wood joint?
The first thing to go on a budget cue is straightness. Perhaps a complete review would include a second roller test after five hours of play time.
An interesting idea, thank you for sharing! 👍

25mm Ferrule? How did you measure that?
That's the ferrule length, not diameter (if that's what you were thinking?) We would have measured it with a calibrated digital vernier. Hope that helps 👍
I did think you were referring to diameter & thought that would be like playing with a broomstick. 😀Does ferrule length affect play? Is there a preference?

At $235, it's directly competing with a Cuetec Avid.
Indeed! We're hoping to be able to do a review on the CueTec Avid soon 👍

@@AverageJoesPool I just had to cut the phenolic tip off of mine and switch to a navigator blue impact pro Max. It changed the personality of that cue tremendously
@@demmarcsxr Why did you decide to make the change on the tip? Did you not like the phenolic tip?
@@AverageJoesPool As it is a jump cue as well, phenolic sucks. It had enough power for breaks, but no control (for me).
My McDermott cues were made in Wisconsin, where I lived for many years. I will never buy a McDermott cue made in China. For me, it's America first, last and always.
Just to clarify on this point, McDermott cues ARE made in the USA. However, their additional brands such as Star, Lucky, Sledgehammer, Stinger etc are made in China. But if it carries the McDermott brand it is a USA made cue. Hopefully that makes sense. Hope that helps 👍
The main McDermott branded cue have always been made in the USA including their G and H series cues. But I think it's cool that they are able to outsource budget friendly cues to reach each segment of the market and introduce the brand to players of any budget or skill level. And McDermott makes the money on these cues.
I can buy any McDermott with the eyes closed
Do you mean because the quality is so good? If so, agree that they are some of the best cues out there! It's nice to see such quality coming down into the Star range, which are not manufactured by McDermott in their USA factory, but rather outsourced to Asia for manufacturing. It can be hard to maintain quality control when the manufacturing is outside of your own facilities, so it's great to see the Star range doing so well!
@@AverageJoesPool of course made in USA
@@ricardoli6235 Yes, that is correct. McDermott cues are made in the USA and both Lucky and Star are owned by McDermott but Lucky and Star cues are manufactured in Asia for McDermott.
Average joes!
Thank you!
