Wow great comparison! Both pedals are amazing in their own way. The green Russian seems to have a looser fuzz, whereas the Pharoah has a tighter sound. Definitely brings you to Melvins, Neurosis and eyehategod territory real quick. Awesome demo. I'm definitely getting a green Russian now. I already have a Pharoah and I love it.
If you really want to go the Melvins, EHG route try to find a used Blackout Effectors Blunderbuss Hybridfuzz. That's the gnarliest tightest fuzz you can find, super versatile adn unique sounding.
Great video as always. I finally found a Pharaoh, used. Ironically in going to trade it for a Green Russian residue plus 50 bux. Lol. I'm pretty stoked. I've wanted a Pharaoh forever.
The Pharaoh is a terrific pedal! There’s tons of versions of it and the artwork is badass! To be fair, it’s hard for me to say if I favor it over a Green Russian because I’m a Muff clone addict in the first place. Lol Cool comparison! Cheers!
I have a Pharaoh fuzz that developed that same problem (switch only worked sometimes) but all you have to do is open the switch and clean it out (there's youtube videos that show you how) now it works fine again.
Thanks! I agree and also think alor do the modded boutique muffs lose rhe power becuase they sacrifice the rounded tone and low end for clarity and openness
I had a Green Russian for a while and while they're fun to play with at home, they don't really cut through at all in a band mix. I'll probably end up getting a Pharoah soon.
Great comparison video. Would you say the Pharoah is worth the higher price tag than the muff. Could you get the Pharoah tone with amp tweaking and eq with the Muff?
@The Distortion Principle thanks dude, I appreciate that. How about if you put the Hoof into the mix too? Also a Happy Christmas to you and your family, thanks for all videos and advice 🤘🏻
Great comparison man. Your tones and riffage were cool. The Pharo definitely sounded tighter than the Russian which was a little flabby. I had a way Huge Russian Pickle for a while wish I hadn't sold it. I have the Fuzzlord FM-4 now and it's amazing it doesn't leave my board and is my favorite fuzz right now for sure. Looking forward to your vid and what you think of it. 🤘
@@TheDistortionPrinciple yeah I just saw it and the Fet120 video and about a dozen more I'm gonna watch on this rainy Sunday. Don't give up on the Fet120 your right about it being a bit hard to dial in a really great tone but when you do it's great. I use mine for more of a mid scoop like you mentioned. Killer Laney dude. Are you running fx front end or fx loop? I have the BATS Civil War Fuzz and a JHS modded EHX GRussian and i run into a Dark Terror head into a 4x12. Currently on my board is the EQD Hizumitas but when I run BATS, its no clip middle, as you're correct, it is more OPEN w/whatever Jfet Bobafet or mosefet it is. I do like the choices of Silicon or Germanium sounds with diodes. Many other settings are too muddy for my taste... might be the Amp lol. Love BATS as I have a Witch Burner prototype but their EQ is very different. I'd recommend ppl try the EQD Hizzy and EHX opAmp BMP.🤘
Front end. Im actually putting together a demo video for the BATs priestess. Shockingly there arent really any up and its as good as the pharaoh. Maybe the marketing wasn't loud enough or something
@@TheDistortionPrinciple Yep almost bought a priestess for nothing. Great pedal. Very overlooked. But modeling is finally getting more "amp like" so basically paralysis by analysis as I run pedal board & multi effects out to 2 JC120 amps or Dark Terror. I could see myself switching between the two, in the same song, for different reasons but probably Green Russian - Rhythm, vocal passages during a song where the Guitar needs to sit-back in the mix BAT Pharoah - Lead, punchy riffs, choruses (essentially a mid - push during a song's chorus or ending) where the guitar needs to stand ou I have both but not on the same board. I think that needs to change!
@@TheDistortionPrincipleI sold my EHX Green Russian and got a handmade Green Carrot Pumpkin Pie (Green Russian & Opamp dual Muff pedal). So that's three Muffs on one board :) Tell ya what, straight into my JCM800 clone it's instant Smashing Pumpkins
Pharaoh knocked off a big muff pi, a big muff tonewrecker and the acapulco gold at band rehearsal. No boost or od used. The pharaoh has a pretty good mid high frequency that cuts on the band mix. I preferably use the silicon side. Also the gain and volume is very responsive with the highs. The louder it gets the more highs it adds. So a setting like this guys is the go to setting. I use the same tone highs setting without having seen this video.
It depends on what and where you play. If you are a guitarist who plays live or alone, at home. The problem is that the muffs, regardless of the model or brand, are all beautiful when you are at home or in another place and play alone. We all feel a bit like the David Gilmours of the situation. But when you go to play live and you're with your band they become a real nightmare: you can't hear yourself and you don't come out in a band's mix. The big muffs have too much bass and too scooped mids. I tried almost all of them and they ALL had the same problem. Also the beautiful Vick Audio 73 ram head which has midrange boost control. The only way to solve the problem is to put an overdrive before the big muff, but at that point the sound changes radically and a lot of noise is added. Or you have to use Marshall head and cabinet but maybe that's not even enough. (I also tried the big muff on a hiwatt amplifier but the problem remained. It is practically impossible to use the big muff on fenders). Do you like Gilmour and have a Fender tube amplifier that you don't want to give up? Maybe (definitely) you'd be better off with a Rat or an Ocd or a boss bd-2waza Craft.
Tanks for this clip. I got that Laney as well and i am toying with similar pedals...so this is really good Inspiration for me 👍👍👍
