Before I leave a comment, we need some context as to how much I love your channel. To say that this channel is great is a massive understatement. I’m sorry… WHAT? I mean this channel is INCREDIBLE!!! While a non-sports fan might rate this channel, 30, which if compared to quarterback rating would be worse than if you spiked the football on every play, I rate this channel 1000. To not do so… Well… what a dumb decision!

Correct. Also Matt Patricia, Phil Bengston, Ray Handley and to a lesser degree, Buddy Ryan. Some guys are great "Generals" others can only be great "Colonels"
Dolphins would not even reach the Super Bowl again (after this happened) until 10 years later. and they had won their last one... while Bill was there.
The information from this video doesn't surprise me at all, I met Bill Arnsbarger in 1984-85 when he was the head coach at LSU and I was in high school (St Augustine in New Orleans) I played Linebacker, was a 3 year starter, and All district player my senior year, as was my teammate Leroy Hoard. When Arnsbarger arrived at my school to recruit Leroy Hoard I took the initiative to introduce myself to him with the intent to express my interest in attending LSU to play football and get a college education. To my dismay, and surprise, he was totally not interested in me or any positive aspirations that I was attempting to communicate or display to him. Looking back at that encounter with Bill Arnsbarger I remember him being very arrogant, rude, and totally dismissive. Finally, to hear that he totally lied during the post game interview after superbowl VIII confirms that he was suspect all along, but in the end things worked out ( I got my college degree and Leroy dismissed him and LSU only to play for a better coach and person, Bo and the Michigan Wolverines)
I’m so glad you gave credit to Arnsparger for his role in inventing the zone blitz. Nobody gives credit to Don Shula and the Dolphins for using the no-huddle as a strategy to be used outside of late-game situations. If you listen to almost everyone you’d believe both strategies started with Sam Wyche and the Cincinnati Bengals.
1. Thank you for improving the audio. 2. Thank you for including the links to your other videos in the description. You have a zillion videos and this makes it much easier to find the ones you mention. 3. Thank you for another great video. 4. One day you'll have to make a video about your process of making these videos as they are well researched and we have no clue as to where you find these great and obscure stories. It would be interesting.
After Arnsparger left Miami in 1983 (after he returned) to take the HC job at LSU, the Killer B's started to decline (it also had to do with age and injury as well). Shula never had a DC that good again.
Maybe terms of the Giants contract weren't finalized on Super Bowl Sunday. Maybe it was one salary if the Dolphins won and a different number if they lost.
Arnsparger is one of many cautionary tales to NFL teams (that probably won't listen anyway) that you should at least take a pause before jumping in and hiring a "smart" Offensive/Defensive Coordinator to be your next Head Coach. It doesn't always work out the way you think it will...
The Giants had traded away all the good draft picks and players before Arns got there. He had a very difficult time building a team. He probably should have taken the other job that was offered to him rather that Giants.... San Diego Chargers.
@Coogan Yes it happen in 1987 doing the Strike when Del Rio though Taylor were a Scab player didn't know he retired and only work for the Chiefs as a Scouts at the time
Matt Patricia and Josh McDaniels lost Super Bowl LII as DC and OC of the Patriots and were appointed head coaches of teams after the game. Except McDaniels backed out of the deal.
And even after that cowardly move, trading guys like Marshall, and as meh as he looked in Chicago at the end, Cutler instantly in his first go round, the Loss (intentional from a salty, disgruntled fan) Vegas Raiders were still dumb enough to sign him, and keep him after he did worse than a GD STC. I wish I chose the Lions as my favorite as a kid instead
@@ShrexyGuywhat is GD STC? Don't worry about wishing you had chosen the Detroit Lions. They will once again return to less than mediocre to mediocre. It's what they've done for the past 60+ years.

I can understand why Arnsparger denied he had the head coach position with the Giants. It seems to me that other people are deciding his destiny without asking him what he thought about the deal. Did anyone ask him what HE thought about being the head coach? I bet not.
A great player almost never makes a great coach. The only one I can think of that did was Larry Bird with the Indiana Pacers. He took them to the NBA Finals in 2000.
I wonder what led Arnsparger to deny that he took the Giants' head coaching job. Why even pursue it if you're not gonna own it once you accept the offer?
Some coordinators aren’t cut out to be a head coach. Having said that, he was a great college head coach at LSU and cleaned up the big mess in Florida’s athletic department. Oh, and he hired Spurrier.
Giants hadn't won it all at that point since 1956 and hadn't even made the playoffs since 1963 but had winning records in 2 of past 3 seasons (70 and 72). Starting with this season, next time Giants would be above .500 would be 1981 (also their next playoff appearance).

This would be the last time a Dolphins coach would deny taking a specific job, then taking that job.
Some coaches are great coordinators but awful head coaches. Wade Phillips is a shining example of this.

The days when the dolphins owned the bills, and could actually win super bowls
