In that series all three did genuinely belittle, bully, and reject him for his appearance, with only his mother showing him any love. He poisoned one, ran over another, and softened a spot on the ice for the oldest to fall through. He also opened the window on a cold day where his sick father was trying to recover. I know the show and the comics are their own thing but I thought some would find it interesting
Classic caretakers not holding others in the household accountable and calling out bad behavior makes the wronged kid vengeful and spiteful. If the mother loved her son she would of done something about such situations both Mom’s enabled and allowed oz to become the monster he is.

The sad part, his mother's dependence on him and her harsh personality is because of the death of Oz's brothers. He's all she has left in this world. Her saying that she deserves to be happy is due to her losing Jack&Benny. There's no deeper sadness or heartbreak than a parent(s) losing their child(ren). She was broken and wanted Oz to succeed in life because his brothers will never be able to achieve their dreams.
She is not a saint. She is actually very unhealthy love towards oz it’s no wonder he reciprocates an unhealthy love back. An adult putting the burden of their happiness on a child is not healthy. She didn’t want him to succeed for the good of him and his future but she wanted him to succeed so she got what “she deserved”. That’s entitlement. It’s also another burden she is placing on a literal child… the way she interacts with her kids is also alarming even before they were killed. What kind of mother watches tv while she doesn’t know where her children are? Say she was a good mom before her children died, grief is not an excuse to be a bad mom and create an unhealthy and damaging attachment style with your child alongside emotional incest
I think it was just the petty actions of a child and when he suspected his brothers where on trouble he didn't say anything because he didn't want to ruin the great moment with his mother that he was having. When he then found out that his brother's died though he couldn't cope with the guilt and shame that he had to become a psychopath or face what had happened at his hands. When his mom gulited him about who was going to take care of her now the love for his mom which he was latched onto combined with the now psychopathy he had developed from pain and guilt then gave him the perfect personality traits and motivation to become the king pin in a world which he saw was corrupt and unfair. That's my take

In the present day scenes Oz is definitely scummy and has an unhealthy relationship with his mother, but he also shows remorse and conflict- he basically cries when Vic leaves him, cries to Sofia and shows a warped sort of moral code. Seems like they dumbed down his character for shock value.

I hated "The Batman" ... Love "The Penguin" ... For real, the show is fantastic, the movie is bland pretension
Show was great. I liked the movie too. What was so pretentious about the movie? (Excluding Bruce Wayne going through his Emo phase.)
@chapman3713 The Batman had zero understanding of pacing. The Dark Knight is a masterpiece of both storytelling and pace. The pretension comes from Reeves not respecting the audience enough to MOVE THE STORY ALONG. It wallows. The Dark Knight has the speed of GoodFellas. It is a subatomic rabid dog that can't wait to tell its tale. Also, Bruce Wayne didn't even exist in The Batman. All we had was him brooding and scowling without the Bat Suit. There was no differentiation between him and the Batman persona, unlike Bale's performance.
Then Reeves turned The Riddler into a mouth-breathing, manic depressive loser 🤣 I could go on and on about why I hate The Batman 🤷♂️ You get the point
