FINALLY someone reacts to this movie, which is one of the greatest slapstick, screwball comedies of all time. Hope other reactors start catching on too. Two other classic Peter Bogdanovich films are PAPER MOON and THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, both shot in beautiful black and white that is very evocative of their period settings.
This film, Paper Moon, The Sting, Death Wish (the original starring Charles Bronson) The Taking of The Pelham 1-2-3 (original of course). Poseidon Adventure (72-73 original of course) Among so many others, were the classics of their day !
A favorite movie!!! "That's a person named Eunice?" "Love means never having to say you're sorry" is the tag line from Love Story, a soppy romance movie Ryan had made a couple years prior. All music in the movie were Cole Porter tunes, from the era when Screwball comedies were at their peak.
I just wish to say, kudos to whoever recommended that film. It is a family favorite, and it is always great to see new people experience it. Great reaction, great commentary, and yes, it is close to impossible to track the bags on the first watch.
When Buck Henry was rewriting the script, he drew a diagram of the hotel floor and used colored lines to map each of the bags as they got mixed up. When Peter Bogdanovich called him to ask how it was going, Buck said, “I don’t believe it. I’ve lost one of the bleeping suitcases.” But eventually he found it.
One of the funniest, silliest movies on record, loosely inspired by by "Bringing Up Baby" with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. The cast is roster of talent: Kenneth Mars as Hugh the obnoxious rival; you will see him "Young Frankenstein" if you haven't already, and in "The Producers". Austin Pendleton as Mr. Larrabee. He is a lovely man, now teaching acting at NYC's HB Studios, and a popular presence in supporting roles in many movies and tv shows. Mabel Albertson as the owner of the jewels, another wonderful supporting actor, with a very wonderful resume. Madeline Kahn in an early movie role. She was a staple in Mel Brooks movies, was hilariously fun and a lovely singer who died too young. The bit about being sorry is an in-joke: Ryan O'Neal was the male lead in the movie "Love Story", and "love means never having to say you're sorry" was the catch phrase from that movie (it was based on a book which was written with an eye toward making it into a movie, and was very successful). Calling Howard "Steve" is a callback to those who know old Hollywood movies: in "To Have and Have Not", Lauren Bacall calls Humphrey Bogart's character "Steve" even though she knows his name is Harry Morgan. (Bogart's character calls her "Slim"). In turn, this is a little in joke from the director. Howard Hawks and his wife: those were nicknames for each other. Thanks for a fun reaction to a very fun movie.
Liam Dunn who played the judge was another Mel Brooks regular: The unfortunate patient assisting Frodrick's lecture at the beginning of Young Frankenstein and Rev Johnson in Blazing Saddles ( You're on your own)
Judy: "Love means never having to say your sorry." Howard: "That's the dumbest thing I ever heard." The audience had to be laughing their asses off at that one. 😆
Oh, we did! Peter Bogdanovich (director) has said that the laugh was so long and loud in previews that he had to add the two reaction shots from Barbra and Ryan so that the audience had time to hear Ryan's reply. Unfortunately, the joke is lost today on young viewers who don't know that "Love Story" had made Ryan O'Neal a movie star in 1970, and that's what Barbra is spoofing. But yes, back in the day, the line got a HUGE laugh, and it was a wonderful way to end the movie. :)
3:34 - For some reason the car crash when Barbra is jaywalking to the entrance to the hotel come to mind as I was driving home from work, which inspired me to watch this video.
That last joke, "Love means never having to say you're sorry", that was Ryan O'Neal spoofing his own famous line from another famous film he did "Love Story" which came out before this. It's an inside joke.
Yeah, Love Story was the Titanic of its day. Big time tear jerker. The slogan "Love means never having to say you're sorry" was pretty much on every ad for the movie.
This movie is one of my old faves. I saw it when it was first released. You don't try to figure it out, you just go for the ride. As somebody above posted, I hope more reactors do this movie, it's just fun and laughter...
@@larrystuder8543 ,, omg, it's tha plaid cases all over again ❗,, surely u follow the reactor, not follow the film, what does it matter if others ever do it ! Or if u love the film that much, why not just rent it from blockbuster 😃🍿
I agree with other commenters that you need to watch "Paper Moon". Ryan O'Neal plays a con man traveling through the midwest during the depression. He agrees to take a recently orphaned 10 yr old girl to here nearest living relatives in a neighboring state. The girl is played by his real life daughter Tatum O'Neal. Tatum won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at age 10, the youngest person to ever win it.
Wow, I didn't think anyone would ever react to this classic. This is in my top 5 movies of all time. Not Oscar worthy maybe but a movie I can watch over and over again. Most Oscar winners I've watched once and that's enough. Thanks for choosing this one and thanks for your appreciation of it.
I loved your reaction to this hilarious film. I haven't seen any other reactions to it so yours may be the first. You'd probably like "Foul Play" (1978) starring Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase as well. "Bringing Up Baby" (1938) starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn is a great screwball comedy which was a major inspiration for "What's Up Doc?". Hope for more comedy movie reactions.
I follow many First Time reviewers, to see how other people react to movies that I have seen. You are the only one that I have found to review this movie. It is an absolutely hilarious movie. So many one liners. The trouble between me and Hugh. You and me? No me and Hugh. I am Hugh. You are me?? stop saying that!! THanks so much for reacting to this.
You'd probably love Clue (1980s, zany, brilliant, based on the board game) and Cold Turkey (1970s, a whole town has to quit smoking for a month to win a large amount of money) as well.
So glad someone has reacted to this movie, one of the funniest i've ever seen. First saw this in a theater as a kid, and have remembered almost every scene.
That use to be typical couple comedy for real life. Not much anymore. If you like this, you might like Tootsie another comedy classic. And don't stress about the reactions. You're doing a good job.

I saw this theatrically in 1974. I rode my Dinosaur to the drive-in. There's a gag/Easter egg in the end. When Ryan O'Neal apologizes to Barbra Streisand on the airplane she replies "Love means never having to say you're sorry". Director Peter Bogdanovich is also a film historian/writer. One of his favorite directors he has written on and interviewed in person is Director Howard Hawks who is famous for a series of "screwball comedies" he did in the 30's and 40's which were the inspiration that Bogdanovich and screenwriter Buck Henry used to pay homage to Hawks. Imdb Hawks and you will find a treasure trove of movies you need to see. Having watched this movie when it was new and having remembered it fondly ever since, I was surprised recently to read Barbra Streisand's comment that she is very shy in real life. She's anything but shy in this film, and she doesn't seem like she's acting at all.
One interesting thing about this movie is that in the scene where the cars are going down the concrete steps, they actually did not get permission to do that. They actually damaged the steps & the steps were not repaired. As far as I know, the steps are still there & still have the damage that was done to them during filming. One movie that I can recommend is 1979's "The Villain" with Kirk Douglas & Arnold Schwarzenegger.
You don't know Barbra Streisand? She looked so good in this this movie. The last line she says is the tagline to the movie Love Story which also starred Ryan O'Neal.
I saw this when it was originally released at Radio City Music Hall. A great experience with thousands of viewers howling with laughter. Have seen it dozens of times since. My favorite comedy!
Many notice the Cole Porter music playing in the hotel; did you catch that in the Chinatown parade (19:33) ,the music playing was "La Cucaracha", and it was being played on German glockenspiels?

One of my favourite scenes and dialogues is "Follow that cab, I'm with the government", the man answering is hilarious, always have to watch the scene multiple times "Oh, alright"
My advice to anyone watching What’s Up Doc? for the first time would be don’t even try to keep up with the red plaid bags. It doesn’t matter. Just roll with it and enjoy!

So glad someone finally reacted to this hilarious film. I second the Bringing Up, Baby recommendations and another fabulous Streisand screwball comedy, For Pete's Sake. Others that belong on this watchable list include: The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming; Fun With Dick and Jane (Fonda & Segal version); Mr. Mom; Operation Petticoat; Some Like It Hot... I'll leave it here. Too many to mention and this is long enough.
Finally someone reacts to this film! Hurrah! Thank you so much!! Dare I hope for the Pink Panther films at some point? (The first one is slow and the fifth one is dumb, but numbers two through four are utterly hysterical!)
@@classiccomedycinemaprogram1640 I agree! But because it doesn't have "Pink Panther" in the title, many people simply aren't aware that it's part of the series. :-(
I love this movie. 😂😂😂 "Did anyone ever tell you that you are very very sexy? Well actually no. They never will." 😂😂😂😂 I could quote this whole movie. ❤❤
My wife and I watch this movie once or twice a year... Its funny every time, easy to watch, Barbra has never been more sexy, walk away with a smile. its kind of a cult game to try and keep up with "which bag is which" and how accurate is "Howards story" with the Judge.. and the Glass joke is so classic and different too. the stunts!
So many fun facts relating to this film - Firstly, the fire in the hotel room scene, Madeline was actually freaking out because she hates fire. The car chase sequence required MANY stunt drivers but the bit where they all drove down those famous Frisco steps, they got into serious trouble for damaging them. Aaaaand, the kid with long hair who's bike gets stolen is Ryan O'Neal's actual son! :D
@@lillymsf5946 That's okay - we all get wrong information sometimes! My comment wasn't meant to make you feel bad, it was just to let you know for future reference. I hope you have a lovely day!
goofball comedy that I think I like more than I should cause my mom took us to this one and it struck me as the first actual "adult" movie I'd ever seen. Made me feel grown up. Introducing Madelaine Kahn. She kills me. And I love her character. She is Fearless. "What are you Doing with Howard Bannister's Rocks?" Fearless. poor Howard. Love the Car Stunts. Can't Fight a Tidal Wave baby Ryan O'neill was famous at the time for starring as the romantic lead in Love Story where the love of his life Ali MacGraw dies of cancer? But among other things in this tear soaked movie Ali says a lot of Love Means Never Having to Say you are Sorry kind of things. Thus the joke at the end of this movie. Judy was a Chaos Machine.
kay did not know that "love is never having to say you are sorry" was a famous quote from a very famous film melodrama of the 70's titled Love Story. Too young to know.
Lots of references there. You should also see Woody Allen's sci-fi parody, 'Sleeper", 1973. Wonderful fast and funny comedy and a great jazz musical background. A comedy classic.
I watched this movie for the first time earlier this year and loved it as much as you. I also recommend the extended version if It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, High Anxiety, Ruthless People and Foul Play

Wow! One of my favorite movies from my childhood. Loved seeing it in reruns of the late late show. Such a fun film.
So glad to see someone reacting to it.
I remember seeing this in the theater when it came out - I was 7, and it's still one of the funniest I've ever seen.
They did not have permission to drive cars down the Alta Plaza steps. You can still see where they patched up the damaged spots to this day.
Austin Pendleton with the glasses on must be the model for Austin Powers.
GREAT FILM.SO,good. Striesand is looking soooooo FINE in this film!! And those eyes. YUM.LOL. Medaline Khan is hilarious also.LOL. This is a must see film if you like comedies.
Based very loosely on the 1938 screwball comedy “Bringing Up Baby”
So glad someone finally reacted to this hilarious film. I second the Bringing Up, Baby recommendations and another fabulous Streisand screwball comedy, For Pete's Sake. Others that belong on this watchable list include: The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming; Fun With Dick and Jane (Fonda & Segal version); Mr. Mom; Operation Petticoat; Some Like It Hot... I'll leave it here. Too many to mention and this is long enough.
Barbara Streisand and Ryan O'Neal did another comedy called The Main Event.
Worth checking out.
Love your review! It’s so refreshing that you appreciated the humor in the film!
Finally someone reacts to this film! Hurrah! Thank you so much!! Dare I hope for the Pink Panther films at some point? (The first one is slow and the fifth one is dumb, but numbers two through four are utterly hysterical!)
A Shot In The Dark (2) is outstanding & the best IMHO.
@@classiccomedycinemaprogram1640 I agree! But because it doesn't have "Pink Panther" in the title, many people simply aren't aware that it's part of the series. :-(
I love this movie. 😂😂😂
"Did anyone ever tell you that you are very very sexy? Well actually no. They never will." 😂😂😂😂 I could quote this whole movie. ❤❤
One of my favorites reminds me a lot of the Cary Grant, Katharine movies like Bring up Baby peace out.
My wife and I watch this movie once or twice a year... Its funny every time, easy to watch, Barbra has never been more sexy, walk away with a smile. its kind of a cult game to try and keep up with "which bag is which" and how accurate is "Howards story" with the Judge.. and the Glass joke is so classic and different too. the stunts!
Crushed as a teen on Babs. She was so beautiful in this one! Look for a young Randy Quaid too.
He's played by Kevin O'Neal, Ryan's younger brother - not his son!
@@amandabaker4678 I was told he was his son, sorry :/
@@lillymsf5946 That's okay - we all get wrong information sometimes!
My comment wasn't meant to make you feel bad, it was just to let you know for future reference.
I hope you have a lovely day!
Barbra!
Brilliant and funny movie. Almost a throwback to a thirties madcap movie.
Sufferin succotash i thought this had something to do with bugs bunny
Looks like I took a wrong turn in Albuquerque.
In my top 10 comedies of all time...and you're the only reactor watching it!
You have a refreshing way about you. You are smart and you catch on to the movie. Love your laugh and please do more of these.
goofball comedy that I think I like more than I should cause my mom took us to this one and it struck me as the first actual "adult" movie I'd ever seen. Made me feel grown up.
Introducing Madelaine Kahn. She kills me. And I love her character. She is Fearless. "What are you Doing with Howard Bannister's Rocks?"
Fearless.
poor Howard.
Love the Car Stunts.
Can't Fight a Tidal Wave baby
Ryan O'neill was famous at the time for starring as the romantic lead in Love Story where the love of his life Ali MacGraw dies of cancer? But among other things in this tear soaked movie Ali says a lot of Love Means Never Having to Say you are Sorry kind of things.
Thus the joke at the end of this movie.
Judy was a Chaos Machine.
kay did not know that "love is never having to say you are sorry" was a famous quote from a very famous film melodrama of the 70's titled Love Story. Too young to know.
Lots of references there. You should also see Woody Allen's sci-fi parody, 'Sleeper", 1973. Wonderful fast and funny comedy and a great jazz musical background. A comedy classic.
One of my favorite movies of all time.
I watched this movie for the first time earlier this year and loved it as much as you. I also recommend the extended version if It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, High Anxiety, Ruthless People and Foul Play
