- On Wednesday morning, the first witness to take the stand in the ballerina murder trial was Alicia Byers, the mother of the defendant, Ashley Benefield. Byers recalled the day she took Benefield’s daughter to the park and returned to chaos after her daughter allegedly shot her husband, Doug Benefield, in self-defense.

In September 2020, Ashley Benefield ran to a neighbor's house in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and stated she had just shot her husband. Douglas Benefield had several gunshot wounds to his leg, arm, and chest area. Ashley Benefield claims she shot him in self-defense after months of alleged abuse. She was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Ashley Benefield made bail and has been living with family and her daughter since the crime.

I know people who have lost loved ones under difficult circumstances. Some talk, some do not. Some ask, some do not. Tehy show support in many ways, and sometimes that support comes in silence.

I’ve lived in Southern Florida for 30 years and it does NOT get “cooler” in the afternoon! In fact the temperature increases. You would take a toddler to the park,if at all, early morning. That statement made no sense. Clearly her and Ashley need to get their stories straight.
Absolutely. I lived there for a time and the evenings are brutal. I tried one time and one time only to walk down my neighborhood in the late afternoon/evening. We couldn’t even walk for the bugs,humidity and the heat. It was absolutely miserable. Makes no sense to me either.
The mom is menopausal so their bodies feel differently depending on hormonal changes. Some places in Fl do feel cooler in the noon depending on the east west facing of the houses.

Very strange. The psychologist who has her client living in her home for eight months, the client shoots her husband dead and the psychologist never talks about what happened with her. Neither does the mother. Never talks with her daughter about what happened.

I find it so hard to believe they never talked about it. I am a mother and I know the first question would be “are you ok ?” And the second would be “what happened?” They gave his poor daughter a much harder time than her mother on the stand.

There is no way you wouldn’t discuss this with your mother. No way! My mother was my best friend who loved me unconditionally. We spoke everyday. We were each other rock and confidants. We lived together when my daughter was born. When she was her husbands caregiver and he was dying we spoke everyday. We were each others sounding board and support. She passed a few years ago. Also doesn’t her mother have custody of her granddaughter now? I feel there is deception here in her testimony.

This prosecution team needs to fight harder or this killer is going to go free. They should have asked more why the defendant didn't discuss what happen with her mother. She is guarding her words so she can't be caught in a lie. This is why she didn't call 911, she didn't want to give a statement on what happened.
Are you serious? Did you hear the testimony? By the time she came back from the park, police were already there. She didn't call 911 because emergency services were there before her.

This prosecutor is missing so many opportunities during direct and redirect. The Dr said that Ashley stated that she would take matters in her own hands. Why didn't she ask him. Did she say what does that mean? She needed to make that point clear to the jury.

I was just watching her testify and she is trying to cry but doesn't shed a tear one and when she has to stand up and show how she shot him she starts fake shaking and she seems to forget a lot and then when she realizes she can't produce real tears when she gets back on the stand she than grabs a tissue and hides her face behind her hair and continues to fake cry and the judge asks if she needs a break so he lets the jury go this is so disgusting and the reason I'm commenting on this one is because they won't let us do it on the other video unless we pay for it
