The banter between the characters is what makes this rewatchable. Comedians at the top of their game.
I love how this movie put me in the habit of saying “Too late” whenever someone says “To make a long story short”
Damn your eyes!
Me too.
Me too! 😂
I've been saying it so long I had completely forgotten where it had come from.
Same
Back in '85 when this came out,I actually went to 3 different theaters in one day to see all the endings.
i hope you enjoyed it all 3 times!
I got to see Endings B and C in the Theaters.
I had to wait until it came out on VHS to see Ending A!
Tim Curry's replay of the evening's events is one of my favorite comedic bits. It was brilliant.
Madeline Kahn’s “flames on the side of my face” and the singing telegram used to leave me in hysterics as a kid. I still use the flames bit to this day.
I made my nephew watch this when he was in High School. He was like "Why would I want to see a movie about a board game?" and I was like "It has Tim Curry" and he was like "Sold, let's do this."
Clue the Movie is really a gem of a underrated comedy.
I think "Flames on the side of my face" is the official funniest line by Madeline Kahn, ever, lol. If I remember right, she improved it. Also, the telegram girl (Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Gos) I believe has the record for the shortest time between a character being introduced and then killed on screen, lol.
I've never understood why that line is so popular, it just seems so bad to me
She has several better ones in History of the World imo.
@@arisucheddar3097 “MY TITS ARE FALLING OFF!”
Allegedly, it’s the only improvised line in the entire film.
Pretty close, some of the "guest stars" in Police Squad TV show might be close runner-ups.
Tim Curry is probably the most underrated actor of all time.
He's in the top 3 in a 10 list at the very least!
Tim Curry is an international treasure!
I'd put Bruce Cambell in that category.
@@mrhal812 oh definitely!
@@nubbin0036 Always and forever!
If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend Murder By Death. It’s similar to Clue & even has the actress who plays Ms. Peacock. It stars Columbo.
I was going to suggest the same thing. Murder By Death works best if you know all the different detectives being spoofed. I'd love to see their reaction to it!
Single greatest whodunnit movie ever! =)
Eileen Brennan
Also HAUNTED HONEYMOON is great fun!
The cheap detective with Peter Falk and Eileen Brennan again as also a classic
Tim curry telling everyone what happened and reenacting the movie up to that point and saying who did what always my favorite lol
This movie is timeless. I've been watching it for 35 years and it's still funny. The cast is absolutely perfect.
I'm so happy you watched this again.
This is a comedic masterpiece. Every line, every shot, so perfectly lined up. The cast, playing off of eachother, and so brilliantly tuned.
This is as close to perfection as it gets.
How is it that in 1985, Hollywood managed to adapt a board game into this masterpiece, and today, they can't get video games right in movies if their lives depended on it?
I think you mean "Can't"
@@tbirum Corrected. Thank you.
I would love to see a Legend of Zelda movie but I already see Hollywood screwing that up!
too much money and not enough talent
I wonder how battleship would be like if it was made in 1985?
I love that Mrs. White threatens Wadsworth, he says no man in his right mind would be caught alone with her, then a little later Yvette asks if someone would go with her and Mr. Green says "No Thank You", and then when they draw straws, Wadsworth and Mrs. White end up alone together and Mr. Green ends up being the one to go with Yvette.
Final ending for the video version of the film was picked from the ending that got the most positive reviews.
Christopher also thought this movie was just going to be a dud after it died in theaters and chose to forget it until the video money came in. He was shocked at how much the opinion changed with the video endings and is very happy to see multiple generations of fans for the movie.
Fun fact: the "flames on the sides of my face" was completly improvised by Madeline.
THIS IS WAR, PEACOCK! I need this on a shirt.
Noises Off is another with a similar type humor & great cast, if you've never seen it.
Noises Off is great too
"He won't be driving home officer, I promise you that" might be my favorite line in this whole movie.
My fave knock knock joke:
"Hey, I heard a great knock knock joke, wanna hear?"
"Sure."
"Ok, you start"
"Knock knock."
"Who's there?"
Matthew: "Favorite bits?"
Me: "Yvette's."
Miss Scarletts were quite good as well.
Colleen Camp, yes, sir. More of that please.
@@Falcun21 You may want to rethink that. Have you seen her lately?
@@jrny20 she still looks good for 68 mate!
@@RandyReviews1990 Well, she may look good, just that there is more of her, like she let herself go. But that's for me.
This is easily one of my favorite movies ever. I don't always think about how much I like it, but when I do I can't stop giggling.
First movie i saw Tim Curry in, One of my favourite movies. Really well written. And the cast is spectacular.
Flames is a lot of people's favourite moment, which makes the fact she improvised it on the spot even more amazing. I miss Madeline Kahn so much. Check out High Anxiety for another great performance
“Math is the Devil’s art”. You are absolutely right!
Must have been such a fun time as an actor on that film, with such talent and comedic heavyweights in the entire cast. Tim Curry has said there was a lot of laughing & pool playing on that set. 👍
Another great period Whodunit is "Murder by Death"! ...and..."Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother"
or "the Cheap Detective"
@@MonsieurBooyah The Cheap Detective is such a confusing yet funny movie. My Dad and I watched it and we had to pause it a few times for our brains to catch up.
Murder By Death is a great ensemble murder mystery lampooning the mystery novel genre.
The bit I always use is, whenever someone says "To make a long story short....", I slip in "TOO LATE!". You'd be surprised how often I get to use it (And the reactions are hilarious!)
I do that a lot too. And it's all because of Clue.
I love Clue. An absolute classic movie. I Wish they made gold like this now.
You all should watch 1975's "Murder by Death", starring Truman Capote, Peter Falk, Alec Guinness, Elsa Lanchester, David Niven, Peter Sellers, and Maggie Smith!
Vastly superior film, but requires a bit more background context for the characters.
At least once every couple months, I find an occasion to say "This is WAR, Peacock!" idk why I find so many occasions, but I do. Have you guys seen Murder By Death yet? Mrs. Peacock is in it, as is Obi Won Kanobi :) It's another murder comedy spoof movie
This is the best, confusing movie that'll have you rewinding, and with a notebook in your hand asking how you missed THIS or THAT?
Just a great movie.
And.....MADELINE KAHN!!!!
My favorite ending is the one with Wadsworth as the killer. I just like the idea of the main character and arguably the investigative force of the movie actually being the killer.
I love that he "exposes" himself... as that can also happen in the game... "it was ME, Colonel Mustard, with the chandelier in the library!"
I literally had that happen one time, playing Clue. I was the killer. What's more, I was playing Mr. Green, and killed Mr. Body, in the Hall, with the Revolver.
With the chandelier? Jesus man, how badly did you want him dead? I was just gonna use the candlestick...I feel like such an underachiever now...
@@TheKyrix82 Sorry.
Mistranslation from me.
I was thinking of candelabrum. Chandelier has same root words, but arrived in english through french first... both come from CANDELA (candle). Because obviously, old chandelier had candles.
But the weapon is not a candelabrum either, but a candlestick, which in my language is a CASTIÇAL.
this was my Grans fave film, she loved how Mrs Peacocks hat moved all over her head but never came off lol
Oscar with Tim Curry is this good if not slightly better.
A great movie. But watches like a live play
@@garycallan7384 It was a play. The execution of the film adaptation is impressive. Very tight filmmaking.
Tim will always be "The Man"!
LOL! “Flames on the side of my face” 😂😂😂 that is my mum’s favorite part
Matt's favourite line was apparently used by the late, great Christopher Lee. During WW2 Lee had an illustrious and mostly secret time, including clandestine work for SOE, the SAS and in a small force of Nazi hunters just after the war. Someone got wind of this and was pressuring him for a fun anecdote.
"I'm sorry, I don't talk about that, it was all pretty hush hush."
"Oh go on."
"Sorry."
"Go on."
[whispering and leaning close] "Can you keep a secret?"
"Yes."
[booming]"WELL SO CAN I!"
Tim Curry is my favorite actor, I love him here.
One of my favorite movies of all time. I literally have it memorized. 🤣🤣🤦♀️
my brain can't handle seeing the movie flipped. I've seen it so many times i know the layout well, this is wrinkling my brain.
Ok, it's not exactly the same type of movie, but I recommend "Without a Clue", if you haven't already seen it. It stars Michael Caine. It tells the story of Sherlock Holmes, but from the angle of Watson being the mastermind, and Holmes being mainly a figurehead. It's a bit like Remington Steele. Of course, something happens to Watson, and Holmes has to figure out how to get him back.
now, from what I understand, they shipped the endings to different movie theaters across the country. So depending on where you went, you would see a different ending. THIS, is actually something I want to see again happen nowadays.
probably the reason the movie failed in the cinemas... Most viewers never knew about the alternative endings.
It was a huge mistake. This movie didn't do well as a result which is a crying shame given what a master class it is.
As a fan of Tim Curry after playing Red Alert, my favorite bits were the Tim Curry scenes. the math scene had me laughing my socks off though.
The comedy in this still makes me laugh. Timeless classic.
Mr Green being straight is the biggest twist of this movie
Hey! Seeing Eileen Brennan reminded me of "Private Benjamin". You two want to take a look at that one?
Another great movie in the same vein with an amazing ensemble cast is Noises Off. Carol Burnett and John Ritter are amazing slapstick actors.
“It’s you and me, honeybunch.”
One of my favorite movies of all time.....love everyone in this movie soo good
This movie is such a classic, there are so many good lines I think one of my favorites is:
Let us in, let us in!
Let us out, let us out!!!
"I'm gonna go home and sleep with my wife!"
LOL....what a way to end the movie. : )
I really dislike that actually, as if for the audience to say "phew, he's not gay".
@@Aeroldoth3 Well, they also made fun of perverts, men, dog poop, groin kicks, fat people, etc..so there was nothing wrong with a gay joke or two. :-)
@@Aeroldoth3, the real point was that he's going to go home and not sleep with somebody else's wife. He's the only one of the bunch that has no scandle attached to him.
@@mgordon1100
Have you seen the movie? The "crime" he was being blackmailed for was that he's gay.
MY point is that many people want and like it when gays turn out to be, or become, straight. It's NEVER the other way 'round.
A similar movie to this is "Murder by Death."
You beat me to it, that is such a great comedy.
One of my favorites. Truly an underrated classic
I feel I need to give a shout out to the writer/director Jonathan Lynn. This was his first ever directing gig, which is pretty amazing.
He's perhaps best known as the co-writer (along with Antony Jay) of the legendary UK sitcoms Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister.
Thank you SO much for reacting to this movie! It's in my top 10 movies of all time. I never get tired of watching it. It's like visiting with an old friend. Yes...the jokes are somewhat super corny, but that's what makes it lovable. Fun fact...Lee Ving who played Mr. Body, was in a punk rock band in the early to mid 70's called "Fear". They were invited to play on Saturday Night Live in it's very early days by one of their biggest fans, John Belushi. What makes this notable is that after the performance, they were banned from SNL for life. They played offensive songs, used obscene language and the dancers destroyed the set with their slam dancing onstage.
I have watched several other channels that did this movie, you are the only ones to really enjoy the continuous jokes throughout the movie.
Yeah, when reactors don't even get the jokes.....smh.
It gets me every time Madeline Khan smacks her champagne flute against the mantel and screams "Please".
Yesss!! Clue is one of my favorite movies. I love it so much. ❤️🤗
Ok, first. I LOVE how this is done like one big play.
Second. Singing telegram girl is from The Go-Gos and played Joan of Arc in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
One thing I don't see pointed out is that in the game, your can't overtake another piece. (if one is in a doorway, you can't go through that door until that one moves.) They did that in this movie up until Wadsworth starts running around explaining the murders. Any time the characters try to pass each other, they collide. Or when Scarlet and Mustard try to slide past each other.
Funny/sad passage of time note. The movie came out in '85 but based in '54. If this movie came out now, in '24, it would be based in the '93...
The flames bit was the only improvised bit in the film. It's the only dialogue with hitches and stutters as a result. And because they were supposed to be
very strict "no improv" about it, it took them all by surprise. Those confused looking around reactions are the actors wondering why the hell she's going off script.
You are incorrect, there is loads of improvised stuff.
It was not improvised, it was Kahn forgetting her line, but it ended up being funnier than the actual line as it had the usually poised Mrs. White dissolving into a sputtering rage.
😂😂😂🤣🤣💙💙💙💙😂🤣🤣💙 Love this movie, The two of you together are my dream husband . So many people don’t get the jokes , and that knock knock joke😂🤣😭💙💙
Tim Curry was amazing as a voice of Gabriel Knight. As a gamer I started to notice his talent more through games first. Then later he played Soviet leader in Red Alert 3, that was so funny and unexpected.
Never played GK... I'm more into rpgs than pncs. I saw him first in Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I first saw him in "Annie", but as I was only 5 at the time, he didn't make an impression on me. This was the first film in which I really noticed him, although I didn't lock in the name until I saw it in the credits to "Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates".
Space!
Let us in, let us out, my favorite part of the movie
I love this movie so much. Tim curry's performance gets stuck in my head all the time
1991 movie "Noises Off" another ensamble cast led by John Ritter.
I always thought of that as Clue’s sister film.
Nah I see you more like Miss Scarlet. Yes we'd all like a house like that with secret passages...and a maid like Yvette!
Emily's laugh is so infectious lol 😆
Hot dang! Hoped you guys would do this one. A classic of camp and slapstick. Perfect cast and kudos to Tim Curry. ALSO: Ryan Reynolds wants to do a remake of this movie. I love Ryan's work but hope that he doesn't.
JUST SUMM GROUNDHOG makes me smile.
Merchandising!
This was Curry's favourite role...mine as well
I think I might be the only one who lets the DVD pick an ending at random when I watch this.
I used to, but when I got my current DVD player, it always picks #2.
5:34 hot damn, after all the years of watching this, that’s the first time I caught the “so your work has not changed” jab
A movie similar in where we see a lot of people running around and several things are happening is the comedy "Oscar" from 1991 with Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei, and Tim Curry, takes place during the prohibition era with Stallone as a mobster trying to leave that world behind.
I was looking for your comment. I'll add that no one's reacted to it that I've seen, so that can sometimes add a little appeal.
Absolutely one of the best comedies ever made.
Favorite bits: 1) when the two characters run into each other at the head of the stairs 2) When the singing telegram get shot.
For me this is a 10 of 10
"Life STINKS" an underrated Mel Brooks movie.
"Transylvania 65000" an 80s classic.
Another good movie in a very similar vein to this one that you guys should totally check out at some point. Is Murder by Death. Very funny comedy mystery in the same sort of style just years before.
Tim Curry said this is his favorite of all his performances.
This is one of my favorite movies! I watch it a few times every year.
"Oui, Oui" No, I just want to powder my nose.
If you like this one, check out the movie Oscar (1991). It’s absolutely hilarious! Got a great cast too (Sylvester Stallone, Tim Curry, Marisa Tomei, among others)
Absolutely! That movie is just funny in a charming sort of way.
There is so much subtle comedy in this movie, I've seen it so many times over the decades and I STILL see new things
One of my favorite movies
My FAV bits of dialogue in this movie is the J. Edgar Hoover bit.
What a classic. I have this still on VHS
just had a thought. You should check out "Arsenic and Old Lace"
YEEEESSSSSSS
One of my favorite comedies
Had to pause watching your reaction after you called out Madeleine Kaun. Your probably the first reactors to acknowledge her specifically. She was such a comic genius. Have you seen her debut movie What’s Up, Doc?
The Telegram girl was played by Jane Wiedlin from the Go-Go's..
This is a classic movie, yes it's a bit dated, and it'll never win awards but it's a great script, great cast, and very well written.
@Al Tee dated because of the film quality.
Fun Fact: there's a novelization of this movie featuring a fourth Kill'emAll ending that was never filmed. The book is extremely rare and costs a lot of money, last I checked.
When this was first released, the newspaper movie listings showed which theatre was showing which ending. A, B, or C. I loved the movie so much, I did go to three different theatres, and saw all three endings.
This is a great movie it is true, but the house always reminds me of my mum's job. She was a guide at Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire (as owned by Lord Byron) and that is riddled with secret passages - for real. This fascinated me in my former years...
I also cured my fear of the dark by `playing' around the Abbey at night. It is a great old gothic building, complete with forests, formal gardens and a tomb for Byron's dog. Wander around there at night and NOTHING seems scary afterwards...
I always forget about the cameo of Jane Wiedlin from the Go Gos as the messenger girl.
01:13 - I agree, Emily. I agree
An exquisitely written and flawlessly performed classic.
The actress at 23:30 reminds me of Zooey Deschanel's usual act.
It's great to revisit old favourites and this one in particular I just love. I always look forward to your videos because it's almost like having movie night with my friends, something I haven't been able to do for far too long because of lockdown. So a big thank you and keep up the good work!
