We applied melted chocolate to the sides of the cake layers. It hardens to create support to the sides. I actually made a mistake on second tier by not applying the chocolate, assuming that tier was going to hold by itself, as it was smaller. Had to redo it after collapsing. The second and third tiers sit on metal brackets. I actually changed 2nd tier bracket when I revisited it. The cakes are assembled on the rods. We iced with buttercream. It is better to apply final coat of buttercream from top tier going down. That way we avoid accidental icing bits falling on already iced cake.
