This is amazing. The part about rotating the hips slowly and pushing the arms away with little to no hinge is amazing. The swing feels so effortless and consistent now. This is as close to a quick fix as I’ve ever seen.
Holy S***! That is the single greatest drill for making my ball strikes consistent. I have a long way to go adding tempo/speed but, wow, that straightened up my shot and is way more consistent. Thank you sir!
This is the only instructional golf video that has had any impact on my swing and oh my goodness it made an incredible difference. Utterly speechless. Thanks for the video man.
I've seen a lot of videos... most of them useless - however every now and again someone is able to simply explain that small detail that makes a significant impact... This one's up there... Kudos sir and best of luck on your tour aspirations. :)
Hit into my net for about an hour this evening. Here's the mantra: "Grab the club. Accept the club. Push away your hands. Super-slow hip turn." Did that about 200 times. I suck a tiny little bit less now. Thanks for the work you do, from a brand spankin new golfer!
Just returning to say thank you for this lesson. I hit an 89 last week, practiced your points here and hit a 77 this week! It really changed my approach to the backswing and I'm very grateful.
Been away from the game for 10 years. Used to be a good golfer. This is opposite of how I used to start my swing. I rotated my club back inside to set my wrists. As I've been getting stronger and back to swinging full shots I've definitely been missing a lot of shots. I'm going to give this a shot since I can't continue doing what I have been. Before my injury I was a single digit handicap. I'm pretty sure I'm a bogey golfer now. I have a lot of work to do but it's great getting back into it. I'll have to check out your other videos.
This is reassurance for me. I've been doing this lately trying to find what works for me and I am so much more consistent. The fact that you posted a video of this method is crazy. I thought I was just making stuff up 😆
This is the 4th Technique which addresses wrist hinge that I have found. This technique seems more natural plus it helps me stay centered and make a full shoulder turn during the back swing. Thanks
Wow watched heaps videos on wrist hinge lately as I am flipping it left hard and this is the first one that made sense thanks can’t wait to try it out.
Mr Short Game, you might’ve just changed my swing forever. I am someone with high club head speed but struggles with ball striking consistency. Never have I thought that being slower with the hips would help, now I do. Thank you much 👍🏼
I've been on RUclips for years attempting to dig my swing out of the turf and this is one of the best videos I've seen so far! Excellent explanation on wrist function in the swing and also pushing the club out in the backswing! In the many lessons and golf videos I've had and seen that's never been explained to me before. Thank you for sharing this with us!
push and turn and slow hip turn. for sure this will make a major change on my swing and i'm so excited to try it at the driving range. thank you for this wonderful tip mrshortgame!!
I can’t believe how much this tip helped me. Thank you so much Matt. Of the endless RUclips tutorials that I’ve watched (yours included 😉) this is the absolute best. 🙏
I know I have a cupped wrist AND a chicken wing, so I'm constantly fighting slice or the dreaded over the top pull. Can't wait to try this drill on the range. Thx Matt!
I've been pull hooking or fading all my shots. I can't wait to try this. It's been sooooo frustrating to try and figure out what I've been doing wrong. I've tried everything to fix it. Fingers crossed!
I like the slow hip part. My golf swing was ruined many years ago when either Johnny Miller or Nick Faldo said to turn your hips as fast as you can. To this day I struggle with spinning out trying to turn as fast as I can and doing exactly what you mentioned with bottoming out and stalling. Great video.
Thanks for this video. I watched it earlier today went to driving range hit 2 bags of balls. Your tip on pushing your arm out was amazing. Still have a lot of work to do but wow what a difference. THANK YOU
I tried to hit a few shots immediately after watching this video in my make shift setup indoor. And it feels smooth. Next on the course tomorrow. Will report result.
Dude you are correct and you have a very good swing, the turn of the hips in downswing is perfect (a quiet turn, NOT a shift). Thanks for the tips, will try.
Just tried this out. Results seem promising. I didn't have a single right slice in my testing (50 or so balls). Going to try this drill more frequently. Thanks.
I started doing this by total accident about 2 months ago, the ball rockets off the club. I'm so glad I watched this to confirm what I was doing. Yes, this really works.
Wow I’m new and was chipping and just grabbed my wedge and decided to just no wrist hinge full power chip with a super strong grip and wow most consistent straight shots, but using absolutely no hing so at the top feels very odd so tried doing some hing and have been in shambles. But I know exactly why. I roll it out like you described. Now if I just go back to a full power chip instead of rolling I go all the way back and wrist naturally hinges now thank you so much
Started doing this with just my wedges, transformation was amazing after just letting the club head drop into the ball naturally, so found out it works for every club in the bag
I literally watched this video this morning and shot a 73. I couldn’t finish the video as I was late.I have a 5 handicap but this was gold! Thank you!!!
How your wrists move is so key. My swing thought was to cock the right wrist back, instead of cocking it up. This automatically makes the left wrist flat(or slightly bowed), and lays the shaft on plane(right palm holding a tray). Almost all amateurs get this wrong. They’re trying to cock the club up, and that puts the club across the line, with a cupped left wrist, and an open face, just like you pointed out. Great video! I remember my left wrist getting sore when I first changed this. It felt strange, but it was so worth the change. Much more predictable flight, with much better strike.
Can’t wait til I’m done with shitty work to go try this out.. been playing golf for 16 years on and off and recently got the golf bug back because of a work outing .. I wanna say in the last two months I was hitting every club in my bag including 3wood (which I was pounding 250 yds)and driver pretty consistently and I was like finally!! I was so stoked that I got a certain feeling in my back swing I like. Well yesterday it went all to shit because I was struggling with my 3 wood as if I’ve never played the damn game.. I was furious and to top it off the range had a power outage right when I bought a large bucket.. at this point I was enraged..
I like it. I have a tendency to start my back swing with a little wrist movement. But after watching a lot of your video and one on taking 3/4 back swings, I started to hold my wrist position more and just let it hinge on it's own when I start my downswing - which I think is what you are suggesting here. Works a lot better. Much more consistent - especially when chipping or taking less than a full swing. Great stuff.
I've always learned A TON from your videos. Here's an idea for a new one...not sure if you'll read this or not but if you do, hopefully you'll like this idea. Topic: What makes a great practice facility? Specifically, what kinds of grasses/conditions/course-up-keep do you feel makes a great driving range practice area? This is obviously a wide range of opinions, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. Also.....for full swing practice (and short game to some degree), what kind of hitting mats and chipping pads do you like the best that you think course superintendents could use in their practice areas? What kinds of pitfalls can arise from poor technique on mats or poorly kept grass? And any other practice facility opinions you'd like to inject. I happen to have a putting green in my backyard in Phoenix, AZ - it's about 800 sq ft. I always find practice area and short game stuff fascinating, so if you want to cover this topic OR if you're ever in AZ and want to shoot a "backyard short game" episode from "Club 3130" and become an "honorary member" (which just means signing the guest book) let me know!!! Best wishes on your continued pursuits for pro golf qualifiers!!! Very inspiring sir! Eric
Excellent video on hinging the wrists Matt! I have no problem in the backswing, it's in the downswing transitioning that my problems occur. Although I haven't tried your recommendation with a slow hip turn, it does make sense!! I will definitely try what you suggested and if it works, I will shout out a big "THANK YOU!" Good Job!!!
I went for a lesson today. I roll my forearms open in my takeaway and have my wrist cupped at the top. I was told it causes an increase in loft and a loss in distance. And ya, I said but Freddie Couples has a cupped wrist at the top. I think I do this because I was always told to have the club toe up when the club is parallel to the ground. But instead of turning my body back to do this, I’ve gotten out of sync and move my arms first then my body. He had me hit shots moving the club outside the target line without rolling my forearms. Alternatively, he said I could take it to the top as I do but then I had to rotate my left hand from cupped to bowed. I think you had a vid on a move like this too. We also worked a little in syncing up the body and arms but I had enough just trying to work on the wrist.
This is genius , I just went out hit plastic golf balls every ball with right to left spin . On the downswing I just get my hands in front of the ball as I turn my left hit . Well done Mr. Short game well done the hat is thrown onto the ice this is a hat trick .
Definitely going to work on this. Wrist hinge is why I would be good one day and awful the next. Everything has to be timed perfect to have that many moving parts
Guilty of the wrist flip hinge and hips turning too fast. I’ve got my back swing on video and it looks exactly like your example of what NOT to do 😆 your explanation and demonstration with the slow mo really help build my intuition on form and tempo, that smooth delivery of power
100% agree with this. The wrist hinge and lag happen naturally when you don't over manipulate the wrists/clubface on the backswing. We could all use one less swing thought.
Weird, I basically figured this out myself over the past two days on the range - have been making contact better than ever. Going to add the slow hit turn next. Great tip!
Great! I recently stopped myself rolling the forearms at takeaway. It still feels uncomfortable, the sensation is exactly like your drill - it feels like I am throwing the club away from me, but it does wonders to my strikes.
Matt, I have recently improved my swing by hinging my wrists (I was hardly hinging them at all). Results were great. But I'll give what you are saying a try.
That's a great way to describe using your forearms to hold the clubhead on your target line and take the hands out of the swing until shoulder turn sets your swing plane
Holy crap this was it! I've been turning my hips too fast! It's like getting hit with a crystal clear diamond lightning strike of knowledge, thank you Sir!
Wow this was some great advice. Been struggling with a too inside of a takeaway and this helped a lot. Played some of the best golf recently after this video!
Great vid! That feeling of pushing the club away while turning really helps me with my irons (when I remember to do it.) Quick question though, is it applicable throughout the bag?
Been playing golf 35 years and this is the single best piece of advice I've ever had ........my ball striking has become way more consistent
This is amazing. The part about rotating the hips slowly and pushing the arms away with little to no hinge is amazing. The swing feels so effortless and consistent now. This is as close to a quick fix as I’ve ever seen.
Best tip I have had in 40 years playing golf...used it off the tee and hit every fairway (for a change)...thanks so much!!!
Holy S***! That is the single greatest drill for making my ball strikes consistent. I have a long way to go adding tempo/speed but, wow, that straightened up my shot and is way more consistent. Thank you sir!
Does this work for drivers as well or irons only?
Drivers as well without question.

What an incredible tip and no other golf instructor on youtube (that I've found) is talking about. Mr. Short Game is the best !
Been away from the game for 10 years. Used to be a good golfer. This is opposite of how I used to start my swing. I rotated my club back inside to set my wrists. Love you too! Finally i understand what happens in correct golfswing😅
push and turn and slow hip turn. for sure this will make a major change on my swing and i'm so excited to try it at the driving range. thank you for this wonderful tip mrshortgame!!
I can’t believe how much this tip helped me. Thank you so much Matt. Of the endless RUclips tutorials that I’ve watched (yours included 😉) this is the absolute best. 🙏
I tried this today and it significantly improved my ball striking and distance. This tip basically fixed my hook.

Outstanding tip sir. Once again keeping the ideas simple and easy t apply for all level of players!
Can't thank you enough for how much this has helped my ball striking
Great tip! This is the piece I've been missing on hinging.
I started doing this by total accident about 2 months ago, the ball rockets off the club. I'm so glad I watched this to confirm what I was doing. Yes, this really works.
Great tip. Was really struggling with driver. Hitting off the heel, weak slices and pull hooks. Really helped. Thanks Mr. Short Game.
Wow I’m new and was chipping and just grabbed my wedge and decided to just no wrist hinge full power chip with a super strong grip and wow most consistent straight shots, but using absolutely no hing so at the top feels very odd so tried doing some hing and have been in shambles. I literally watched this video this morning and shot a 73. I couldn’t finish the video as I was late.I have a 5 handicap but this was gold! Thank you!!!
This video right here is what I needed!!! Going to take this to the practice net and dial it in!
Wow! I almost passed this video up. This was so timely for me. BTW...Good luck on your journey,!
Thanks Matt. What a aha moment that was. Made me realize what I’m unknowingly doing when I absolutely catch one. I’ll be working on it. Great tip.
How your wrists move is so key. My swing thought was to cock the right wrist back, instead of cocking it up. Great directions with simplicity! Tk you!
Man what a great tip. Been struggling with my irons and wrist set. After this tip 40/40/39,
Smashing my drives too. Pretty good for a 15 hncp.
Can’t wait til I’m done with shitty work to go try this out.. been playing golf for 16 years on and off and recently got the golf bug back because of a work outing .. My god! What a tip! Went to the range and tried this, took a swing or two and then everything was a straight compressed ball. THANK YOU!
Matt, Thank you for all of your great videos and the honesty and frankness you display!!
It’s all in the hips!!! Can’t wait for you to make the tour!
One of the best videos on you tube! Killed it!
This has helped sooo much. Can’t believe I’ve never thought of this or seen it explained before.
I know this is old but that’s the best lesson i ever seen on RUclips

Simple, exact and doable. I love it! Will this work to stop me from hooking my hybrids?

I used to chip / pitch into a can off a patchy lawn. A great practice facility is nice but what you make of it is even better.
You are the Bob Ross of golf coaching 👏👏👏
Excellent video on hinging the wrists Matt! I have no problem in the backswing, it's in the downswing transitioning that my problems occur. Although I haven't tried your recommendation with a slow hip turn, it does make sense!! I will definitely try what you suggested and if it works, I will shout out a big "THANK YOU!" Good Job!!!
Thanks Matt. I discovered the slower hip turn but was still struggling with the take away. The pushing the hands out really fixed my wonkey lead arm!!
Worked on this today on the range and it was amazing. Crushing the ball. Thanks.
You mentioned this already when you talked about long irons, it is unbelievable but true push and turn !
this had insane results man thank you
been doing this for a couple of years. great way to add consistency and distance. awkward at first, but with exploring! start well.
I went for a lesson today. I roll my forearms open in my takeaway and have my wrist cupped at the top. I was told it causes an increase in loft and a loss in distance. And ya, I said but Freddie Couples has a cupped wrist at the top.

Great, great advice!!! Can really feel the moment of lag in the transition.
You just described my entire mess of a swing, left….right. I can see this helping thank you!
I’ve been struggling….I mean struuuggling with my wrists for a WHILE!! Thanks for the video!!!!
Love it. I know I roll my wrists like that. Can't wait to give this a try.
I have never heard that before. Is great advice. If that is an original thought then you are a genius.
This is genius , I just went out hit plastic golf balls every ball with right to left spin . On the downswing I just get my hands in front of the ball as I turn my left hit . Well done Mr. Short game well done the hat is thrown onto the ice this is a hat trick .
Great lesson. Very subtle, but effective.
Definitely going to work on this. Wrist hinge is why I would be good one day and awful the next. Everything has to be timed perfect to have that many moving parts
There are several drills I have for take away, but this is going to fit right in and won’t cause any extra thoughts. Thank you thank you!
I used this ALL day on the course. Awesome 👏 😊
I CANNOT WAIT to take this to the range!!! It feels so right just here in my office... Luckily no one walked by my door. :)
Guilty of the wrist flip hinge and hips turning too fast. I’ve got my back swing on video and it looks exactly like your example of what NOT to do 😆 your explanation and demonstration with the slow mo really help build my intuition on form and tempo, that smooth delivery of power
Nice way of putting that info.out.Well done!
This simple trick worked wonders! My ball striking was pure once I put this into play!
Quick one, when you push forward while rotating your club face should be pointing more toward downward to insure a more close club face upon impact?
100% agree with this. The wrist hinge and lag happen naturally when you don't over manipulate the wrists/clubface on the backswing. We could all use one less swing thought.
Never thought of it that way Matt. Thanks for opening my eyes!
Ha ha love it!! What a great way of tricking into your body into form. Thanks for keeping it simple 👍😁
I have been trying to not hinge the wrists too much, but lacked a good thought/drill on doing so. Thanks!
I think your tutorial are The best and simplest ways to fix strikes
Weird, I basically figured this out myself over the past two days on the range - have been making contact better than ever. Going to add the slow hit turn next. Great tip!
This tip has helped my strike my irons so much better!
Does this tip help with driver too?
Great! I recently stopped myself rolling the forearms at takeaway. It still feels uncomfortable, the sensation is exactly like your drill - it feels like I am throwing the club away from me, but it does wonders to my strikes.
I like the slo motion part
Push out , hinge at the top
High finish , belt buckle towards target !
Beautifully explained...Thank-you
I can't wait to try this. Thanks, Matt!
Wow so different from other coaching.Feels ok. I’ll keep trying it.
Matt, I have recently improved my swing by hinging my wrists (I was hardly hinging them at all). Results were great. But I'll give what you are saying a try.
Ya gotta think…. Right wrist back, not right wrist up. Trust me. You’ll thank me later.
Doing this tomorrow. I do another drill similar to this to try and prevent rolled and cupped wrists, but I think this one might be the key for me.
Will have to give this drill a go. After seeing this I realised I am uncoiling too quick. Thanks Matt 👍
this was a solid one. best of luck reaching your goal of the tour!
When can we expect to see Mr Short game on tour??? Such a great swing matt!
That's a great way to describe using your forearms to hold the clubhead on your target line and take the hands out of the swing until shoulder turn sets your swing plane
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. You're the best!
Yes push out and make sure not to cross the target line. Btw nice shaft dude!
Amazing lesson in tempo
Holy crap this was it! I've been turning my hips too fast! It's like getting hit with a crystal clear diamond lightning strike of knowledge, thank you Sir!
Wow this was some great advice. Been struggling with a too inside of a takeaway and this helped a lot. Played some of the best golf recently after this video!
thank you! changed my golf game
Great vid! That feeling of pushing the club away while turning really helps me with my irons (when I remember to do it.) Quick question though, is it applicable throughout the bag?
I hit every club in my bag at the range with this method, everything long and straight.
