Thank you, Brian. Please do a repotting video in May. I look forward to hearing about the mix you use for potting. Thank you for mentioning the sun requirements in winter. I've never moved them into more sun and one species is a shy-bloomer so maybe more sun in winter will help it.
I have grown cymbidiums for years in Wisconsin and now Minnesota. Probably because you do not have to bring them in, you did not mention that they like to get cold (but not frozen) in the fall. They like it to be in the low 40s in the fall to initiate flower spikes, so you might want to leave them outside a bit longer before bringing them in. This may be the problem for those who have trouble making them rebloom. They also demand good drainage. However, the bark mix used for many orchids drains too well. You are better off with packed sphagnum moss +/- charcoal and pearlite. They want more sun than you would think- yellow green leaves is the goal. It can be tricky bringing them back outside without scorching in the spring. Both of my daughters now grow them successfully in our cold climate too!
Perfect Timing! I just inherited close to a dozen Cymbidiums from a friend who is moving away. I ❤️ Cymbidium Orchids because mine seem to absolutely THRIVE on neglect - and still manage to produce a few blooms. One of my older orchids - I swear I killed it! - well, after a year of randomly watering a clearly rootbound and DEAD pot of orchid stalks, the damn thing came back to life! I call it my Zombie Orchid!
I live in SC. I purchased a warm tolerant cym seedling some years ago. It didn't bloom till it's second year, after which it flowered every year. I repotted in compost, leaf mold, pearlite. I ended up with two large plants in no time. They were massive. I Put them outdoors in part shade all summer, and left them out till nights got down into the 40's. I brought them in, and they would be loaded with spikes, flowering in January. Cym. 'Swanlake Bayfront Park'
Thank you for making this video. I just got this orchid for my birthday (in may). My grandmother has been growing these outside for years (northern CA zone 9b). She gave me part of one of hers, so it's very special to me but it's a new plant I've never grown.
Yes, please do a May video on separating and repotting cymbidium orchids. I live in zone 9b, and my cymbidiums stay outside all year long without any damage from frost.
Thank you! I have about 10 pots of cymbidiums! I inherited my mother’s and have some of my own as well. Great to hear that yellow-green leaves are the best color. What has helped me with not overwatering is “weekly weakly”.
Hi Brian, definitely a yes please to dividing the orchids. We are mid summer here already but it will give us in the southern hemisphere something to reference in November. A number of mine need dividing but they seem to take a couple of seasons to recover after I do it. Also I am unsure how many of the older bulbs to remove and how much root should I leave on. I am looking forward to that video already.
Thank you Brian! I purchased my frist Cymbidium about 3 years ago at a nursery not knowing what type of orchid. It had a lot of flower spikes. I could tell it was an outside orchid . I placed under a small palm tree that has filtered shade and it surprised with a lot of pretty flowers. I think it is a dancing lady orchid. It didn’t seem to care about when I watered. I think she need repotting in May. The pot is very full. This week I purchased two more and one has flowers opening now the other has more buds on its spike. Fertilizer your recommended is soon to come! We are visiting an orchid nursery this weekend. And plan to stock up! Your videos are so helpful.
Thanks Brian, great info. i have one now totally bursting out of the pot and I see only two blooms this year. In past years it was like totally incredible with a dozen bloom or more, I think I need to devide, so yes, looking forward to your advice in May.
I had alot of cymbidiums, but didn't know how to take care of them. I am following your advice hopefully next year, I can see blooms for them. I just bought a new since I couldn't make my bloom.
We freeze to much to grow those flowers and I don’t have a place to bring them in where they would get enough sun light. I’ll pass this video to my sister in California. The flowers are really beautiful. ❤️🌺
Perfect timing, my white Cymbidium has a flower stake. I have a pink and an orange. While it is true even in Northern California by the coast they do well, it is important to know the best methods. Thank you for the tips!!! And yes to the repotting video, my white one is very much needing to be repotted.
Ah HA! I finally know what I've got. My mother gave me one of those in 2006, and it grows outside in a large pot all year in Sacramento. Blooms regularly and is pushing out bloom stems right now. I never knew what kind it was, thanks.
Loved your video ❤ I’ve Saved it to refer back to it after Buying this Beautiful blooming plant yesterday that I found when I went to Repot it, that it’s an ORCHID 😮 Help I don’t want to Kill it as it’s So Beautiful ❤
I've done nothing of what you proposed, and yet my orchid have grown and bloomed every year!!! I think I've fed them twice in the last 3 years😅 My husband serarated a cluster which was a bit difficult to get out of the clay pot, put them into two other pots. They bloomed beautifully the second year! Wish my indoor orchids were as hardy....
My mom grew beautiful cymbidiums without even trying at the beach (HB). I keep trying to get a few of her potted plants to bloom at my house (MV). I've not killed them, so after watching your video, I'm going to move them into a little more sun and get slow release fertilizer. Fingers crossed for blooms this year. 🤞😀
A suggestion for future videos for Friday flowers is maybe alstroemeria? I have best success in the ground but would also love to grow them in pots. --Susan
I was recent given several large pots of orphan Cymbidium that need to be transplanted and loved up a lot. I'm in 10a and they are currently sitting on an eastern facing porch. I don't really know what to do with them, but I couldn't resist taking them. I would love a video on dividing and repotting them.
Another great video, Brian! I have a variety of orchids and they pretty much thrive on neglect…unless we have too much rain over an extended period of time. This video helps me understand how I can take better care of them so they get more blooms! Thank you 😊
Question I am planning in a few days to repot my cymbidium. I was planning of using lava rocks, Yes or no???? I live in Chapala, Mexico. The rainy season just started, not in full force yet. Days are 90’s & night 68-70. Hours
I just acquired a cymbidium in San Diego and it’s now in chino… zone 9b I believe. At any rate the plant seems crowded and is mixed with a lot of what is probably Bermuda grass… it is January… if I repot and thin out now… is that a bad idea or should I still wait til May?
This is an absolutely awesome video and something I have been looking for to push myself as a gardener and a plant person. So I truly appreciate something like you create and help others as well to learn and try the tricks and tips for someone as well. Just a big thank to you for this and wish you all the best :)
Lots of people say grow them in bark I only use soil and perlite and it bloom even more then bark only. I only did that to experience it to see which one is better.
Hi, Nice video and duing good work by telling how to save plants for .l am from India Delhi . Here temp is 43 deg.and will go near 47 deg this time is very hot how can can l care my cymbidium and Dendrobiyam plant .please tell and help to save my plants . generally people don't plant this type of plant here
Help… love cymbidiums. I got a small rooted offshoot from friend c while visiting San Francisco Area 4 yrs ago. Brought home @ planted in same medium as my other orchids. It has hardly grown at all. Don’t know what to do to get this growing. Is it becuz I I’ve in South Texas where it is hot & humid & inside is air conditioned. Have it on shaded porch . Thx for help.
I love cymbidiums! Because most of mine are over 20 years old and are fading, I started looking for replacements. I have had a hard time finding any in SD area. Have you found any for sale?
For the life of me I can’t get my cymbidium to rebloom, please help 😢😢😢 I definitely need to see the repot in May. I love your Friday videos, I mean I love all your videos but I just love flowers a lot 😁
Hello..I have grown many types of orchids here in Texas. I live on the Gulf coast. We get frequent rains here. Sometimes too much. We have really hot humid tropical summers. Winter here is usually mild but we do get some frost and occasional freezes from late November on. Summer starts here in May. I've grown cymbidium orchids before but do run into issues with them. You mentioned putting them outside for the summer in the shade. What temperature range is too hot for cymbidium orchids? I have a hard time getting them to rebloom here. I always keep my orchids in my greenhouse during the cooler months. An old friend of mine in my local orchid society says you have to water the plants with chilled water from the ice box in August and September as our we do not get cool nights here in my climate til late November at least. Do you have any advice for someone in my climate on how to grow cymbidiums? I know they are grown here as I've seen them at shows but summer care for them is challenging. We do have high humidity with interchangeable drought and rain spells here through the summer. What suggestions do you have for me?
My cymbidium leaves are long like 48 inches or longer forever green every leave maybe one or two leaves would turn brown and dry off and flower each spike at least never less than 17 flower five to 7 spikes per pot always outside in Santa Monica California should I trim all the leaves out like 24 inches to help grow more every two or yearly
I was given an orchid for my birthday. After a year and a half of research ,trial and error it is hanging with buds .Garlic water seemed to work perfectly.
Does this work for all orchids? I dont have blooms every year. I did stop by the garden show a few years ago in Seattle and was told that orchids dont require a lot of water. Water seldom and leave them alone. No need to fertilize as often as stated on the fertilizer bottle states. Some orchids can wait up to 10 years to bloom again! This was all told to me by the Orchid expert at the garden show.
Most of what you said is true. Of course it always depends on the type of orchid. I have found fairly annoxious orchids to be super easy and definitely Bloom every year
"Some orchids can wait up to 10 years to bloom again! " - most orchids should bloom annually once mature. It is true that from germination it can take 10 years to get to flowering size, for some orchids. The American Orchid Society has quite a bit of information online and there you can find answers to most of your questions.
And yes, please repot an orchid in May! And please clarify my understanding - I believe orchids like to be a bit rootbound (although "a bit" can be wildly subjective!).
Grazie immenso.. carissimo. ..al rinvaso ho aggiunto al mix apposito per orchidee del concime lenta cessione OSMOCOTE e ogni 20 GG aggiungo anche concime liquido...per quest' anno ho avuto delle fioriture discrete..❤😊

I have been trying to find cymbidiums in Minnesota. Do you know where I can find them?
@@austinnguyen8666 online nursery's and etsy stores. Man mn suucks for orchids.
yellow green leaves is the goal? I thought mine was dying because it wasnt deep green lmao

Yes, I need a video on how to repot a cymbidium! I was planning on doing that right now after watching a video here.

How do I clean out the old dry stuff?
Would love to see how to repot and how to divide thank you
