Hello, I had just found your video. I am not sure if you would be able to give me advice on a large pot of orchids that I was just given by a friend who is moving house. I love orchids but never grew them before. I am very lost as to what I can yo with it. Can I propagate it and repot it to smaller plants? I can see that it is flowering. I do not hv alot of inside or shaded space. But have a big outdoor area. Would be lovely to get some expert advice from you. Thank you.
@@kathylee7528 Hi. Is it cymbidium orchid? The best time to propagate the plant is right after flowering. You can try to follow the way I divided the whole clump, make sure you use the right potting mix (it's labelled orchid potting mix), place it in a spot in your garden where there is partial shade (particularly to protect it from hot afternoon sun), and water it twice a week. All the best!
@ezigardening Hi, thank you for your reply. Another question i have also, do you have any recommendations to where I can buy the large barks besides the orchid mixes sold at local stores @ Bunnings, M10/warehouse? I do have a humongous cymbidium plant that very likely need to be splitted into at least 6 or 7 pots plus pots of psuedobulbs as well. Hoping to mix up own orchid mixes myself which would cost less than buying ready mixes. I would appreciate too if you have any tips concerning putting together your own orchid mixes. Cheers!
Hello kabayan. Salamat for the video and shared idea when to repot. Got them too. We are country neighbours. D2 ako sa Sydney. Salamat uli. Dami kong ire-repot.
Thank you. I really appreciated your tutorial and the wealth of knowledge you shared, especially helpful to beginners like myself. Could not help but admire all the beautiful succulents.
I just rescued 3 pots of this orchid... they were up the back of a large and neglected garden.... with one of them, the roots are growing out of the bottom of the pot😯.. After watching this video, I am going to have a very good look at mine, buy some potting mix, and try to do as you did... 3rd August Blue Mountains NSW Australia
Thank you... very informative... have a few only but i need to divide the biggest one... fuscha color... i noted you are NZ based... me too.. i visited a farm of cymbidiums where i bought a few pots... very nice
Hi, thanks for this video with your tips. I just purchased 7 pots of cymbidiums for my collection and I am so happy with them. I hope I can keep them happy and I will make sure to apply your tips on my care for them. A new fan here.
Wow you have been thourough & extremely helpful. Will be getting started on my many plants of cymbidiums which are over 4 dozens. Thanks Happy gardening
Good video👍😁I used to grow many cymbidiums, now I'm starting to grow them again. My climate is freezing, dry, yet sunny in winter and a very humid summer 80%. I have a cymbidium indoors over winter by a sunny window. The room is unheated as I know cymbidiums like a cool winter. Thanks for the video😁👍💖
...CYMBIDIUM ORCHIDS😍. . . I'm an orchid grower from Baguio City, Philippines🤗. . . My search of Cymbidium lead me to your channel😊. . .coz yesterday - a sudden very strong rain, lightening/thunderstorms with ice and strong wind happened in our city and some of my more than 80plus potted cymbidiums fell down😢. . .i am due for repotting supposedly nextweek but this occurence came without typhoon but just an LPA still from afar. .anyhow, i am looking for cymbidium growers who uses soil only and i haven't seen one yet. . .because i grow all my cymbidiums with pure soil mixed with compost made of kitchen n yard scraps i harvested myself. . .yes it is just soil because they are used to it already, and their placement is in the second floor terrace that can be blown by a strong winds so i want them to be in soil . .now, i see in you that a pinetree bark can be used mixed with some lime for the pH since pine are acidic. . .THANK YOU SIR🤗. . .I plan to cymbidium with soil mixed with pine barks and lime. . .after all, i'm from the city of pines so barks should be readily available...😊
The pine bark that I used are composted and commercially available. Not sure if fresh pine bark will work. Anyway, I wish all the best. Happy gardening!
Hi my name is Jan, I love your cymbidiums all the colors, I love to learn to grow cymbidium now. Is it possible to buy few bulb’s from every color you have? I like to learn how to take care of them. What do you think?
Sorry, we've just moved to Christchurch from Wellington. I brought some cymbidium plants with me and i'm just trying to see if the plants are happy in this much colder (but less windy) place. BTW, where are u based?
Im a new grower and learning. The leaves of the original plant of my cymbidiums are dark green with white spots but the new shoots are a lighter green. Ive never had a bloom and Im in the Caribbean with very hot tempertures. What do u think the problem might be as they look unhappy.
Hi Misael, I am also in NZ. I really like the two colours in your show. The creamy white and yellow colour are very beautiful. Are your in Auckland? Can I buy some from you.
Thanks Misael. This was very informative. I have several Cymbidiums outside that have recently grown flower spikes...even though we are now in September in NZ. I assume I will need to wait until after flowering to divide the plants? PS I love your succulents in the background.
Thanks Sue. Yes, it is best to wait after flowering as it is always best to propagate plants when energy reserves of the plant is not spent on flower production. After flowering, energy reserves will be solely for the production of new roots and shoots of the divided plants. Cheers!
hello Misael....great video tutorial. if u do decide to sell your cymbidium I would love to be considered. I have only one cymbidium so I am still learning. Your succulents are beautiful 2 👍
I just recently got a new mini cymbidium to replace the one I killed trying to learn how to care for them. I thought I had over watered it. I’m 78 and housebound so don’t buy green bananas any more so I just canned the old and bought a new one. It came potted in very little spag moss and is in spike. My question is when do I repot it and can it live in a self watering pot.
About 20 -25-cm pots should be okay. I use controlled-release fertilizers (osmocote) just before spring time. You should find instructions on the fertilizer label as to how much to apply depending on pot size.
Do you think we can grown them in zone 8 Canada Vancouver??? Or should they be indoors, I grow hibiscus indoors (tropical) and outdoors (hardy). And I have Chinese ground orchids, helleborine orchids, (outside) and cattleya, dendrobium nobile, phalanopsis, and oncidium. I would like to try cymbidium they look very gorgeous
Cymbidiums are among the most hardy orchids, but they may succumb to frosts. They may do well outdoors but it is best to provide frost protection. Cheers!
Hi i got a gift Symbidian Orchid it has no roots it is put in some kind of gel...Do i have to get it out from the gel and put it in water or leave it be?
Hi sis, good timing, I have just published my video on how to propagate aglaonema and monstera. Please watch it. And yes, calathea and aglaonema are both propagated by crown division.
...mmmmmm there are cymbidiums that grows well in the warm and cold so better research the warm tolerant cymbidiums. . .i live in the North of Luzon growing cymbidiums😊...
I would trim the roots to a smaller size before placing it to the new pot. However, it would take the plant to grow more roots before growing new leaves at the top. When you have several months prior to have new blooms in the spring, then trim the roots.@@ezigardening
It may be exposed to too much light. Filtered light (or partial shade) will be best for this plant. Also add fertilizers, as I've suggested in my video.
The keys would be: right maturity, sufficient light, right temperature, rich soil, sufficient moisture. I have described all these in my video. Cheers!

I accidentally ripped the new leaf out of my cymbidium will it still grow a new leaf? I saw some yellow on the leaves we’ve had some heavy rain so I checked the roots to see if we’re just overwatering so I lightly and stupidly pinched the new leaf and it just slid right out but it’s still very green did I just kill my one of a kind orchid.?🥹😅😭

There is a chance they will grow and send out some shoots. Just keep them in your pots.

Thank you so much for sharing!
Is it okay to plant the orchids in ceramic pots?
yup, ceramic pots are among the best containers for orchids as they are porous and will prevent too much water accumulation in the medium.
