That was an amazing video. I am just about to attempt making some drums from large plastic barrels and this video will help a lot. I would have liked to have heard your drum played more but I am sure it sounds great. Many thanks for sharing.
Ohiyo Susan: Great meeting you at the 2015 North American Taiko Conference in Las Vegas! The workshops we happened to attended together, 'Improvisation and Creativity' and 'Multiple Drum Techniques' were wonderful... 'Taiko Jam' beyond electric... your thoughtful video on drum making a valuable tool for taiko drum makers everywhere. Best to You, Matthew, and Robert, and to Stockton Bukkyo Taiko! So Re, -Lois, Unit Souzou / Korekara Taiko, Portland, Oregon.
What an incredible instructional, and entertaining video! I've been lucky to be witness at different times as the drum in the video was created, and in my own small way can attest that Susan, Matt, and their Taiko friends work incredibly hard and with such skill, patience, and devotion to adhering to the Japanese cultural tradition of making such beautiful (and always functional) works of art and music. Seeing the work that went into just one drum is impressive; knowing there are 19 others already created and so many more to come boggles the mind and inspires me to practice more due diligence in my own art--bringing to life the ethics of creating with passion and with care. Well done, Brunis and skilled Taiko friends!
One of the nicest and most informative RUclips videos I've ever seen. Thank you. Cheers, D. (Will be making a Taiko drum someday and this will be my guide.)
This was awesome !!!! Thank you very much for sharing. Very interesting and educational for me being that I consider myself a hand drum aficionado with a great interest in vintage tack head conga drums. Thanks again!
Great video! Thank you for sharing the process! I use a router to make the bull nose, it is much faster and precise. You can also use a planer and make the first few crude passes, then use the belt sander to finish.
What beautiful drums! Your skill and dedication are impressive. Knowing Susan and Matt, I should not be surprised at the drums artistic inner walls, but I am! This is a wonderful and informative video. Bravo!!! Thank you all.
WONDERFUL ! I was hooked on drumming after l watched the movie Bird of Paradise. Although log drums were used, the amazing rhythms and intricate tones drove me wild. l had to make drums.l was only 12 so my barrels were 55 & 20 gallon sizes. l tried pulling large truck inner tube slabs with dismal results. l was watching a PBS program on the brain and Taiko drum were used demonstrate the brains ability to synchronize after a Taiko drum group played each on their own randomly and gradually synchronized. l flashed back to 1963 and foR fun....l searched RUclips AND THERE YOU WERE! Your band seem so happy and clever l was wondering if there might be a similar bunch behind The Zion Curtain wherer l live? PS...Your video was delered beautifully. $ stars
Great video! I will build a drum with a barrel too but I need it to be lower. What do you suggest? Do I cut the wood at the desired height before or after removing the barrel rings?
I have an old barrel and I would like to make a simple taiko. However, I have no access to the tools and i don't have such crafting skills. If I bent skin tight on the ends of the barrel will I obtain satisfactory sound that allows me to train drum skills?
Do you have a subjection to where and how i can get my hands in some wine barrels? I would love to try and re-replicate the Nagado. PS: I loved the video. It was very informative.
Samuel Rodriguez I am creating maketaikodrums.com and it will have additional details there. Thanks for the feedback. Our goal is to share our experiences and information.

You can also use Rice glue by mushing rice
And i also use urushi lacquer to ensure strength

When you're tuning the drum, would it help to use a drum dial? Do you guys think a drum dial for western drum sets would work?
Taiko drums really simmiliar as Mosque Drum

Thanks so much for sharing this! :) Just wondering, what thickness of rawhide is advisable to use for the skin?

Actually you don’t glue on the black dots. They are like a type of nail that you put in.
