Very good information….I have seen many practices in minor hockey boys and girls that the coaches ignore the goalie (target practice only). Many don’t understand the position so they focus on the 15 skaters only. Team nots going to do well with no goalie instruction so that’s why I stepped up and coach the goalies on my daughter’s teams. Took the 2 goalie clinics and researched playing the position. So far I’ve had good feed back and seems to be helping the goalies game and building confidence. Thanks so much for your videos they are very helpful!
The next great goalie is a 10 year old somewhere thats playing basketball because they weren't exposed to hockey. There's a thing in the USA with parents that avoid hockey especially goal tending. Probably a lot of missed potential. And opposite there are rich families pushing their kids through AAA even though they aren't built for it.
Canadian goalie experience: 1. No hope to play at higher levels unless 6'1 or above. A few exceptions, of course. This is discouraging to many parents. 2. Utter corruption at every level with hockey Canada. Where I live, the coach's son and his friend or assistant coach's son is always the AA goalie. 3. Triple A? Ugh, even worse corruption. The #1 ranked goalie was not chosen for the team in PeeWee. 4. BUT, the division 1 school system, competing with the AAA league in Quebec, is producing exvellent goaltenders. They simply choose the best kids applying to the school, and many have full time goalie coaches ( like my sons school). My son doesnt play at College Ester Blondin, but this school produces awesome goaltenders year after year.

@@FutureProGoaltendingUSA Thanks for your reply! No one from Ester Blondin moved past the "Q" yet. Hopefully soon. I have a question for you. Last year, the grade 11 goalie from my son's school had the option of a USA prep school or the QMJHL. He choose to go to the USA. If given this option (good American Prep school or QMJHL) do you have a recommendation?
Some communities in Minnesota and California in the larger populated areas actually gear the kids up all the way threw minor hockey. Taking the cost to the parents out of the picture. Most parents now days, and perhaps always, dreaded the cost if their kid wanted to be a goalie. They do it in other places around the world like Europe and Russia. We may want to look at something like that here, because their is a Canadian Goalie issue.
@@jamesbruce8749 We all had minor hockey gear growing up but it was crappy. Parents do not want the stress and expense with the fact that the kid and parents can do EVERYTHING humanly possible to progress and something directly out of their control will invariably end the journey.
I’m the volunteer beer leaguer trying to help out our little club. I’m not the best option, but I’m the only option. What can I do to help? Right now I’m just doing my best to stay up to date, and sticking to the basics.
Lmk help you…. Your efforts are what makes hockey great…. Willingness to learn and grow as a coach. DM and I’ll reach out directly to help you step by step. The Masterclass will be the best thing you ever did in this area..
Love you content, but I have to disagree on one point. You said that the goalie coach can't be just some beer league guy. We do offer value, especially with the younger kids where an expensive goalie coach won't be at practice. We can help implement basic skating drills and help newer coaches understand the need to have separate training for goalies. There is not enough goalie coaches and to say a beer league can't teach is just not true.
@jasondreyfus7911 you missed the point. A beer league goalie coach is PERFECT!!! If…… they are updated on their goalie education. . If a beer league goalie is teaching how THEY played that is to be avoided. I played, coached and scouted in the NHL and 75% of what I teach I have never done personally..😎
No goalie coaching IS better than a beer league goalie coach who can’t teach RVH, and modern skating requirements. Otherwise you are just training future beer leaguers
There is a gap across the board, Canada and the US, where I am based. I get your point about whether they can teach modern style and that i do agree with. But I would argue give some of them a shot. Maybe if there was some type of certification program where they have classroom and on ice training time to teach willing beer league coaches to teach the kids the basics at 6 to 12. Maybe that will close the gap.
They all have the ability to play it's mainly a mental game .If they really can handle the pressure.Skinner as well got to game 7 play off finals last year .Many of these guys are elite athletes it comes down to mental ability at this po level .

Getting goalies to keep the stick on the ice period can be a challenge some days. Good take on development.

If you go to a random small town Canadian rink on a Tuesday night, you are far more likely to see NO goalie coaching or out of date goalie coaching .
