Removing a seized quill stem from my 1992 Dawes Super-Galaxy Restoration.

- Whilst most of the bike just needed a good clean and service, the stem was badly seized inside the frame. So much so I thought it may be game over for the Super Galaxy.
Fortunately after a lot of patience, lots of wiggling and plenty of WD40 I finally shifted it.
I've raised it (and greased it) for now but will likely replace it for something longer before cycling around the UK.
Great to see the lady came to the rescue! I often need some extra pair of hands too. Thx for this great video, you encourgae me to persist!
Haha, yep, couldn't hold it all steady. Even the dog came to help at one point!
It was a long battle but worth it!
Piece of wood (2x4 for us yanks) for leverage in the forks is my go-to!
the worst seized head stem I had I used a forklift to pull it apart along with refrigeration gas being flushed though the stem to cool it as being aluminum it shrinks more than the steel
Wow, I'd have given up by then haha!
i have the same situation
Hope you were able to sort it 👍
Well done. I was lucky with my 1987 Super G that i have just completed. Quill and seatpost were both completely free.
Mind you, one of the crank bolts was seized and had to be drill out and re tapped and the same with a rear derailleur set screw! So these old bikes will get you somehow.
You can see the start and finish here.

Funnily enough, I'm just having it serviced after a year of use and the crank bolt is fully seized! Going to have to either weld it to a rod to remove or grind off the crank to remove it!
You're right, they'll get you one way or another!
