I dare claim to be a distant relative of Warner Oland. My great grandfather was born 1882 in the same area in northern Sweden and was called Volmer Ölund. Warner Oland's real name was Verner Ölund and he was a few years older, they were not brothers, but cousins I think. The "vaguely asian" appearance runs in our family. When I was a kid other kids often asked my if I was "en jävla japan eller?" - "a bloody japanese or what?" Maybe it was meant as an insult, but I mostly just laughed it off.
This is the first full Charlie Chan movie I've watched, and it was actually pretty entertaining. Can't understand how Warner could get away with that accent, it's CLEARLY swedish, not chinese. Especially when he sings it's super obvious. Back in the day it was probably enough with just a foreign accent to be believable. Great audio btw.
I'm proud of Warner being my kin and him succeeding as one of the first swedish Hollywood stars. He took the role seriously and portrays Charlie in a sympathetic way, but maybe a bit too stereotypically asian. It's sad they couldn't cast a chinese actor for the role, but I think Warner did a very good job. I don't know if chinese people find these movies insulting and racialist, hope not.

45:59 What could be more Chinese than a rickshaw? Well, pretty much anything actually invented in China. They are actually a late 19th-century innovation from Japan and "rickshaw" is a corruption of "jinrikisha" which means literally "man pulled vehicle". The Tokugawa Dynasty banned wheeled vehicles for most of its three-centuries of rule. The Meiiji Restoration which replaced it in 1868 lifted the ban, and the first jinrikishas appeared the next year. They rapidly spread to China, India, Southeast Asia, and even South Africa.
When my ship made a port call in Hong Kong in 1979, I saw only one rickshaw. It was part of a memorial. Rickshaws were illegal by there by then.

Is Charlie Chan the only detective who has a loving and supportive family????
Nick and Nora Charles had a marriage with one child but I can't think of any other detectives who had large families.

I actually love the old Warner Oland version of Charlie Chan and this is because he made it his business to know Chinese before they did some of the filming in in fact Shanghai and he claimed he came from a Asian mother Mongolian to be exact and there's been disputes on that grandmother not mother but he really was loved by the people in China they thought he was one of them and they said he really understood them well enough that they considered him Chinese, the only reason that whether its fox or its Warner Brothers or whatever back then they had whites playing Asians is because they could not have a scene where an Asian either hugged or kissed a person who was white it was against code as far as they were concerned Warner Oland having come from Sweden as far as they were concerned he was white, therefore permissible to play an Asian who might have to hug or or comfort a white woman in some way because anything else would not be allowed, however I've noticed a few things Warner Bros must have Warner Brothers or Fox I forget which it is it's probably Fox the company that was doing the Charlie Chanmovies were probably partially convinced that he had some Asian blood because they actually allowed him in one of the movies to hug and even kiss on the cheek is Charlie Chan's daughter, they would never have allowed it had they had some doubts as to how white he was.
