Just looked this one up - it was Toler's 22nd and final appearance as Chan, and his final film of any kind. He had cancer during his last few films and was often so weak that he could hardly walk or say his lines coherently. No wonder he seems more gruff and moves so slow in this one. Rest in Peace Sidney, and thanks for all the movies.

Toler made the best Chan for me. Look up how many films Mantan Moreland was in......through the roof. Mary Kornman of Our Gang was the niece of one of the other two Chan actors ( Warner Oland ?). She went on to be quite the actress in other later films with big name actors like John Wayne.

Don't know if RUclips will allow the link, but here's a page for Toler's films: charliechan.seriesbooks.info/sidneytoler.html He did 11 films for 20th Century Fox and 11 films for Monogram. You can find most here on RUclips if you do a deep search for them, though some are in pretty bad condition.

Sydney is 72 here and dying. He looks great for 72 though, right? Sadly, it is to be his last film. It was produced in July and August of 1946. "The Trap," opened in theaters in November of '46. Three months later, Sydney, born Hooper G. Toler Jr., died February 12, 1947, from a prolonged bout with intestinal cancer.
Victor Sen Yung, Jimmy, Charlie Chan's son in this one, had an unusual life. He of course had his extensive film and TV career, but also, in 1972, he was on a hijacked plane. During that incident, he was inadvertently shot in the back by an FBI agent, as they stormed the plane to apprehend its hijackers. In 1975, he stumped the panel on To Tell the Truth, with his life story. His death too was unusual. He died from a gas leak from a kiln he used to fire his pottery creations. His body wasn't discovered for 9 days. He was 65.

Yes, the various styles of stereotypical women of that era is like an encyclopedia. If you watch closely, the men in the movie were also stereotypes. I wonder if that is why some of the typical Chan banter and teasing was not scripted in - might not have been only due to his health.

My friend most black people didn't appear in any movies Charlie Chan movies were ahead of their time because it was mostly always a black somewhere in one of those films most of the films in the thirties and forties had no blacks at all 0 how these films at the time was somewhat Progressive something is better than nothing the vast majority of films from this time had no blacks period!!!!! The film The Birth of a Nation affected the way America looked at blacks the first 50 years of the 20th century it was the most powerful film ever made as far as the image of blacks was concerned most people have never seen a black they only knew black because of this film what a scene of this film and they seen the film hundreds of times during the early nineteen hundreds one of the major reasons for the word Niger and the Demonic image of the black man was the film The Birth of a Nation our image was set during the 30s 40s 50s and 60s a negative image of the black man and it is an image that is still strong in the year 2021 all we can do is play athletics dance and sing that's been our image for the last 50 years reparations for slavery that's a joke but slavery built this great nation

The one with the French accent it's not a real good actress to me. The other female that does all the screaming all the time is over exaggerating. Other than that I really enjoyed this Charlie Chan movie it was a really great movie thank you for the upload.👍👍👍 Mantan Moreland was a great actor he was amazing & all the Charlie Chan movie's🎥🎥 comic relief very funny😂😂

I totally agree Angela Bassett did a amazing job portraying Tina Turner in what's love got to do with it. She didn't win the Oscar. She also played. Betty & Coretty. She also played Rosa parks she didn't win a Oscar. Denzel Washington won a Oscar for training day. Playing a dirty cop. But didn't win for playing MALCOM X. A Great Civil Rights Leader.

Si vous présentez un film en français annoncez-le en français. Sinon faites-le en anglais et les gens de toutes langues et origines pourront choisir de regarder le film en anglais ou pas. C'est la base de tout respect et de courtoisie.

This is a good one. The only problem I have with Charlie Chan movies is how they portray the black actors as ignorant, silly and overly scared. (I guess black people had a reason to be this way at that time, and I hope we can finally realize that we're all equal as souls having a human experience.)

      Fear not my dear,
      In the Jerry Lewis
& Dean Martin movies, Jerry is
      always the fool,!!
      Black or White,
      Comic relief has
      NO color,!! Take it
      for what it is,!!!
      Mantan Moreland
      was a great actor,
      Not only in the Chan
      series of movies, but
      also in other ALL
      black movies, made
      especially for black
      people,!! He made
good money as a black actor and comic at that time,!!
      One his Last movies,
      "Spider Baby" was
      with Lon Chaney jr.
      Late 1960ies, he had
      a long career in
      Hollywood,!!!

Oh they still do the same characters on occassion often through their own chose. Whats really sad us the underwesr still hanging out in public and the horrible mysogynistic and drug hyping rap music just to be rich. Even the female rappers often humiliate themselves and others by association. Sad. Moreland was a funny comic.

A normal sized car, usually able to hold three passengers in the back and two or three in the front, pulls up at a house, the car's doors open and 12 persons (at least!) troop out! In fact, an endless amount of people get out!!!

(Where is Warner Oland and Bruce Humberstone when you need them?)
Sydney Toler, 1946? Is this Sydney Toler's last film?
Has anybody taken up the mantle of our favorite detective since then? It's long overdue for another iteration of Earl Derr Biggers character. Don't you agree? Eight minutes in and I'm bored to tears!
(This had to be Toler's last Chan, it wasn't cancer that took him from us, it was shame. This is lame.) SMH...

Mr King I don't know if you're interested (and I mean no disrespect to anyone by mentioning this), but there are free apps available that will block ads on youtube. You can use them at your discretion. If this is unhelpful or in any way offensive to you, please excuse me.
