You can actually finish this whole game with 1st place in each level without ever using the boost function. All you need to do is purchase the pit droids, and then upgrade your pod using parts only from the junkyard. Droids will repair damaged parts after each new race, allowing you to make a profit when you sell them back to the yard in exchange for other parts. You can actually max everything out within just half an hour of gameplay. Even the worst pods (looking at you, Elan Mak °o°) can get you 1st place in every level, including the invitational circuits. One other thing to keep in mind though is that the pit droids will only keep four stats fully repaired, so I usually choose just four things to upgrade and leave the rest untouched (stock parts never get damaged). I would recommend maxing out acceleration, turning, and top speed. The fourth stat you can decide based on whatever helps you the most (in my case Repair). 😼
Which is what I accidentally did on my first playthrough as I didn't know there was a boost button
IMO Elan Mak is mediocre, but Ody Mandrell and Neva Kee (especially the former) are probably the worst due to their horrible default speed. Gasgano at default is also very frustrating to play as without upgrades; his good speed is completely offset by weak acceleration, very slippery handling combined with poor turn response, and his engines overheat almost instantly if you boost and take forever to cool down.
@@SparkyMK3 ...to sad to read this, Gasgano is my favorite pod and favorite racer =(
@@SparkyMK3lol I've only played those two haha. I always make these choices by accident.
If we’re doing Star Wars remasters, I’d adore Shadows of the Empire.
Oh damn, you're right. Though I still probably couldn't beat IG-88, the cheating droid bastard.
Why not battlefronts ?????
@@AeonCommander OMG man, you brought back memories lol. 1G-88 is the droid in the junkyard correct? If so that particular boss battle was so hard specially since we were kids, took us hours to beat it lol.
@@reznortetrault4348 I always used like 3 or 4 lives with that bastard lol
I still have my Nintendo 64 and have both of these games, I also bought this game but on PS4. I'd too like to see Shadows of Empire in modern consoles though.
this game is surprisingly deep in its mechanics. I love how much thought they put into the controls
"The only reason you'd watch Episode I again."
Um, hello? Duel of the Fates lightsaber fight?
*Cries in being the only person to love Phantom Menace*
@@noahfessenden6478 You aren't the only one.
@@noahfessenden6478 i love the prequel films (AOTC being the weakest in my opinion only because of the bad romance writing lol)
More than the fight itself, the soundtrack. May Yoda bless your soul, sir John Williams.
@@IceSpoon I'll drink a Fuzzy Tauntaun to that!
I've been playing it for the last week and I love it. It takes me back to when times were much brighter and simpler
Me too!! I was like I hope Nintendo brings n64 games onto the switch but if its only game it better be starwars pod racer
Do you guys still play??
So much memories. Loved it on N64
After seeing this video, I really think there's a market for these sort of reviews for older games. Because admit it or not, most people haven't played the classics from prior eras, so treating it as an explanation of the game, and review by modern standards, would be a great way to explain to people what these games are about and why they should check them out. We can see this with games like Luigis Mansion and Animal Crossing, when these came out on Switch, there was a large crowd (Me included) who didn't have a clue how they played, and then we looked up reviews and all we could see was "This Animal crossing has more stuff to do" or "This Luigis Mansion is a return to form". A return to WHAT form?
Low effort comment wants high effort games to be reduced by low effort videos, allowing the low effort to enjoy a high effort, by pressing "win".
Make your own game?
Yeah, it would be nice to see more reviews of retro games from the point of view of someone who likes games but has never played or owned any retro consoles. Nostalgia-free reviews, in a sense, so you can have a better idea of if you'd like it on its own or not, and not just whether people who have nostalgia for it will get that feeling again.
There are channels out there. Look them up.
There are channels look them up
@@fourdee4d I wonder if you're still just as smarmy as you were a year ago.
"Easy to unlock all the characters" Did he ever beat Abyss?
Omg i hated that track it took me forever to beat it
@@YoungWill163rd Think we all did. On Switch the better stick REALLY helps, as well as being 20 years older too. Made my first one-shot of that track on Switch
Is that the track where falling from the top part to the bottom makes you instantly drop like 6 positions?
@@jacksonpercy8044 Exactly the trouble with that track. Only ONCE have I ever one shot it on the first try. Half of that track is knowing where to boost and where to slow for the turns. Even the 2nd part of the track you could fall and fall behind some thanks to that tracks design. Seen it listed on some Top 10 hardest race track videos for a GOOD reason.,
@@Railer61 I've NEVER managed to get 1st place on it. Not first try, not 100th. Not sure if I could do it even now tbh. I tip my hat to you though, that's quite an impressive feat.
While a bit glitchy, two player split screen makes Mario kart be completely forgotten about when friends are over in terms of sheer speed and reaction times!! This is now my favorite racer on the switch!!
And this is why we need f zero on the switch
Loved this game growing after playing Lego Star Wars Skywalker saga remembered this and searched it up glad they remastered it, its a classic
Gamers: We want N64 games on Switch!
Aspyr: Ports Star Wars Racer.
Gamers: This looks like crap!
will yeah it's a old game
It May look like crap, but it is fun as hell. I'm enjoying racing every single track. I wish they will make a remake or a new version of this game. Too much fun. too much. Love it
@@ped182 It doesn't even look like crap tho.
@@bradydavis5791 I mean it looks pretty bad but it's been polished up a bit on switch than the n64. Still same textures tho
This is a n64 game ..... the rest of n64 games will look the same or worse so appreciate it and embrace
I love it. Some people can whine that it's just a basic remaster but it still makes huge improvements over the original with just controls, input lag, andframerate. Also it's much sharper and was an amazing game to begin with
Same. During my middle school years I played the shit out of the N64 version, so I can confidently say that the Switch port is not only 60FPS and 1080x720. It really has improvements (albeit minor, but the game IS a simple game) that make it smoother and easier to handle. Something as simple as having Repair & Taunt, and Accelerate & Boost actions now in separate buttons makes it that the pod racer does exactly what you want.
And perhaps this is just me, but the overall speed was greater. Like, I don't remember reaching 480-ish during the first races in Tatooine and Mos Gaza. It felt quicker from the start.
Just beat the game yesterday game was super fun just like how it was in the 64 days
Jon Tron yea some tracks are glitchy at times especially when your goin fast
As someone who missed out on the N64 release, thank you for providing info on how this game runs on the switch because I was super interested other than the fact that I was worried it might not have been ported well
I played it both in N64 and Switch: The control is more sensitive on the Switch so your racer (specially those who are VERY nimble like Slide Paramita, Neva Kee and Bullseye Navior) does exactly what you want. And there's a nanoscopic improvement that actually makes life easier: you accelerate with R and activate boost with A. Since now two different buttons are in place (unlike on the N64 where everything was with the A-button) you have more control over your own decision of when activating the boost. Nanoscopic, but it's an improvement.
Everything else: it's the same as the N64.
I didn't know it was finally out! I'mma go buy it right now.
Limited Run Games is doing preorders starting July 10th for a physical release.
Saw it in the shop, in the new releases. Bought it instantly.
Then it would be like $60
Only found out this remaster was a thing the other day and purchased it straight away. Great bit of nostalgia. Be great if they do the same with shadows of the empire and rouge squadron.
Oh my gosh Shadows of the Empire!!
Can you play the game with an actual controller or only the joycons?
@@maggiebeltaa5421 I assume you know the answer to this now, but supported controllers are listed on the eshop page for every game as well as the Nintendo website page for each game
@@bradaloop Thank you! I still didn't know the answer 🤣 I used to play this game on Nintendo 64 and it was the coolest. I'm thinking about getting it for the switch. Thank you so much!!
Someone is gonna buy this, not knowing it's a remastered N64 game and be so disappointed with graphics
I mean, the trailer and screenshots in the eshop say it all. I bought it, knowing about the graphics and I like them. I think it has this special thing to it.
@@moonlightmando7163 I was thinking more along the lines of Karen buying this hot new Star Wars game physically for her son for his 11th birthday
You mean compiled game for ARM, with untouched textures/geo? AKA: "Port".
I remaster your Chinese whisper.
Pfft, gone.
Dude I think people would buy it it's a n64 starwars game only non starwars fan would say what you said
I don't know what you are talking about
Graphicas are great
Since they did this in the combo pack with Republic Commando, I would be over the moon to see a Bounty Hunter/Clone Wars port make it to the Switch!
Bought it on Star Wars day and was pleasantly surprised! As a F-Zero fan who has played FAST RMX already for years by now, this was a welcome "new" futuristic racer (for me) and another cool N64 game that I don't want to miss anymore. The controls are surprisingly good, the tracks are varried enough, the speed gets intense and the music is John Williams, so wonderful. I'm glad they ported it though of course some nicer textures here and there would have been nice.
Now we wait for Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 to come to Switch
I found out recently the PC version works great (1080p, 60fps, steam, GOG) and there is a discord community that got online multiplayer working. You can have 8 players online!
Its based in LAN use isn't it?
This port is AMAZING. I owned the n64 version and just bought the switch version yesterday. Incredible version.
just need f-zero now.....
... and Wave Race!
cool review. If this had online play id buy it
It sucks that it doesn't have online, But if it ever goes on sale, I can wholeheartedly say that the split screen race intensity has replaced Mario kart at my house parties with friends!!
It's just a whole nother ball game
the original game didn't have online
Not every game needs online
@virtue sorry bot not every game needs online and it's a game so I don't know how they would do it
If you're not buying it because it doesn't have online no offense but that's pathetic
I would love to see a remaster with a few new levels added, and some depth added, alongside online multiplayer...
They pretty much ctrl+C ctrl+V this game. Graphics suck, but gameplay STILL holds up imho
"Bullseye" Navior was my jam! So many great memories of exploding from just tickling a wall.
Oh, right, Prequel-hating. I'd almost forgotten about it, honestly, with the new trilogy taking so much heat. Ah, well, now I get to relive my childhood years of preferring the newer movies and getting shit for it.
The boost control was allways a little iffy. The game is worth its money 10x. Absolutely wonderful.
Would have got it in a flash if this was done with modern graphics
The graphics are still good, I actually like them because they are special.
Dude it a n64 game what you see is what you get it shows your not a starwars fan only non starwars fans say that
Would buy it in a flash if it wasn't 15$. That's a bit much for a N64 game.
It's a good game and try to get through GVG without dying that's special
@@sangerzonnvolt6712 Dude IKR. It's cancer but it's fun. I'd recommend using Bull's Eye Navoir, since he has amazing traction, turning, and repairing (you'll get pretty beat up if you don't slow down on tight turns).
1:14 You know this game was also released for PC and already ran at both high resolutions and 60FPS, right? I played this A LOT not only in my N64 but also on Win XP.
One thing you failed to mention is the horrendous rubber banding. If you get ahead, you spend pretty much the rest of the race alone in front and it is very boring. If you fall into last, good luck getting back up again to first.
To be fair it was notoriously bad in the opposite way in Mario Kart 64
You mentioned that you'll have to hit the r button to repair when necessary. I think that it's relative. You can hit the b for brake just one quick time and stop the boost and it stops overheat and you're good. Or if you want to push the limit of the boost I recommend getting a repair upgrade asap as it takes less time to repair and therefore you get less of a speed decrease and you're back in the race. Hitting brake at the end of the overheating gives you almost instant speed reimbursement and you'll do just fine.
Not even brake just let off of the acceleration and you lose the boost
I would absolutely buy a modernized remake of this game, were they to do that. Add more planets, more/custom racers, modern racer physics, modern graphics, online multiplayer, etc., and it would kick so much ass.
I was so glad to see they put it out for the switch. I would attempt playing it on my phone but it wasn't the same without a true controller
i played this game soooooooooooooooooooooo much on nintendo 64 with my dad, he was a real pro :p just saw it now on ps store and was like, whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
Not every game needs an online mode.
yeah people need to shut up
Yeah they act like any racer is ded without it lolz
The 'Switch Version' gets lag spikes and has hidden over extended wall hitboxes. Ramps and ledges kill you unless you're holding up and holding down on steep up or down sections also kill you for no reason. Game is fun overall but these are glaring issues you can't ignore as well. Xbox AND THE ORIGINAL N64 don't have this issue
Neva Kee was the best racer for me. Not the fastest but seemed to be the most agile podracer. Unique design because the pod was physically attached to the engines instead of tethered.
Who cares about graphic when the game is awesome!
Loved this game on the n64
I want shadows of the empire on the switch soooooo bad!!
I know right!!! Although a shooter that old would be a pain to play now with the graphics and lag. Maybe a remaster but yes man that was my favorite game on N64. I’d gladly accept a port or anything.
Dude I loved that game so much. I played the train level so so many times. And I remember the first time I got the jetpack. My 8 year old brain could not believe how cool that was!! That game had so much variety in the gameplay too between the vehicles and the walking.
I don't like the game in my opinion
let's be honest. NOTHING will beat the arcade machine.
I'm curious do the stats of the AI racers also go up when you upgrade the other pods?
Nahh, those go up just with the levels themselves. :)
The graphics actually look pretty impressive. Looks even better than I remember.
It's because this is based on the PC version but at an even higher resolution
I actually bought this for 64 just because I didn’t think there was enough of a difference to be worth getting it on switch
Neva Kee was my main guy. The line at the start of races, "The current record holder for this track is, Neeeva Keeeee" is permanently fried into my brain.
Fun fact: I played through the entire game without knowing about the boost mechanic, coming in 1st place for all but 3 races.
So it is possible
Honestly, I played this game when I was a kid. I won all the races with no boost or repair. Game was easier when I worked it out, this time around.
😂😂
This was the bundle game with my xmas N64. So many hours in this one
I unabashedly love this game. Certainly not the best game, but it’s still a joy to play. I played this so much as a kid, and now my kids can play the best version of it. And no one can tell me otherwise: Neva Kee is the best racer in the game 😂
I was a big M.A.S.K. fan when I was young. And in my mind (that is nearing 40) it looked fantastic, the story was great, the best saturdaymorning-cartoon ever. I recently watched an episode again. I wish I hadn't. I believe some things should be a sweet childhood memory. And I get the same feeling, when I watch this. It will never give me the same feeling I got when I first booted this game on my N64. It can only disappoint me. But then again, for someone who never played this before, this could be great.
Ahhh Mask, what an opening tune it had; between Mask, GiJoe, Transformers, Dino Riders and Silverbirds we had it good 😊
It still amazes me I can technically play an N64 game on the PS4.
Let’s be real folks as those of us who grew up with this game on the N64 what we’re seeing on the video is how our nostalgia saw it
My brother wanted this on my switch
I bought it, tried it, and it looks... the same as the N64 game we played as kids (and now because we still have the N64 game)
And the controls are weird
Also, idk if you can, but can you change the stats when racing? On the N64 you could pause, then I think hit the R button until you see a big square and the flag of each player.
This game and every location and character in it is technically canon as the game was shown on the screen in the Outlander Club in Episode II.
I was so hyped when this game got announced. But then I realized it was just a port from a 20+ year old game...... That I already own twice (N64 and Steam). So yeah, I was pretty disappointed.
They need to re-release Rogue Squadron and Battle For Naboo next. PLEASE.
Star Wars Racer 2 with VR support for PC and PSVR please!
loved this game but beat it in like 4 hours unfortunately
i wish there was more replayability
Now THIS IS F-Zero on the switch! Sad that Nintendo doesn't want to bring back F-Zero.
I always say just make a new pod racer and it’s better than wipeout this game was hard back in the n64 days
If it had online play I'd buy it straight away but without I don't think I'll bother.
Honestly the person reviewing the game speaking of it should be the one playing it imo
Instead of remaastering it, they should do a new Pod Racer game, I think there is such a market for it. Based on the concept but new, Star Wars is huge right now and alot of that is nostalgia.
I still have Starwars Kinect and the pod racing and tracks are pretty awesome! I still have this on 64 and I’m thinking of getting this for switch aaahhhhhh!!!
Hating on the prequels? Okay dude 2008 called
I missed this game
Best pilots : Neva Kee and "Bulllseye". Period.
I remember this looking really good on P.C.
But I'm also an old fart, so maybe my memory is bad? Lol
It did, for its time look really good on PC. Console.... Nah.
I will second the fact it looked really good on the Dreamcast.
@@KryptKicker5 Didn't play that.... 🙊
This is almost definitely based on the PC version, but at a higher resolution, so this should look better than any other version
This was an amazing game on N64
Am I the only one who remembers this game on the Dreamcast?
Game was awesome on the Dreamcast!!!
It's actually entirely possible to beat the semi-pro circuit with no upgrades. I did it with Ebe Endocott.
classic!
Ebe was one of my favorites
I beat the whole game with no upgrades. Anakin is OP.
@@arturocevallossoto5203 he's a bit too slow for my liking at base form. I found the most challenging way to win the game is to start at the galactic circuit with the base roster. For me personally, I found Ebe's high base cooling stats to serve me best.
I remember playing this as a kid and being pretty annoyed at the economy in it. I didn't know about the parts trading though.
What's the name of the song you play in is this video?
Played a lot of this back in the day... With a joystick! On a Pentium III xD hahaha
I finished the game a few times without turbo boost before I found it on my keyboard. It makes some races easier but it’s not very necessary.
Man I lived and breathed on the edge of destruction pushing my engines using boost when I was a kid xD
I would disagree with your part at the end Alex. I think that there is value in a game like this that you can pick up for 10 mins for a hit of simple arcade fun. Big companies don't make a lot of these kinds of games anymore and I like filling my Switch storage with Shmups, Beat em ups, Retro collections and arcade games and indie games to be the ultimate pick up and play machine.
So this game is a straight up port and not a remake or a remaster? I mean, just look at dem character models.
“Only reason you’d watch Episode I again…” the pod race is the one part for the movie I skip through!
Not the only part for me but can relate haha (tho the extra clips that werent on our vhs tape I look for, those are cool)
Grew up with this game on the Sega Dreamcast
I wish it had multiplayer or new tracks
Online mutiplayer souls greatly expand the games
Enjoyed this game as a kid on the 64
What was the cheat you used to get characters
"Hello there lovely people italics woman's and the life here" -the english subtitles for this video XD
Great racer. But the sound volume and quality sucks and one of the videos is reversed...
"It's a new rap record!"
- Eminem, 2020
Having trouble with this on the NINTENDO SWITCH. NO BOOST! HELP!!!
Its all i need, forget online multiplayer this game wasnt made for that. Lets vote for rogue leader and battle for naboo combo
Honestly loved the 64 version and this new one . However , I feel it’s a bit lazy work . Could’ve made this with much better graphics . But still a fun game
I actually won all the races without using speed boost as I didn’t know how to use it 🤪
"Chokodoka Pit-Stoya!"
Now imagine a 4player splitscreen. Didn't the N64 game have 4p Splitscreen? O.o
It wouldn’t have been hard to upgrade the graphics so it doesn’t seem so outdated.
Sense of speed indeed - almost as fast as F Zero X
I actually prefer this game over Revenge
It's perfect as it is
This is the closest thing we can get to F-Zero on Switch
Wrong. There is a game that came out shortly after switch launch thats basically a wipeout/f zero rip off.
Though this is better than those other games
I googled it and it was fast rmx. Which is better than this.
@@ICalverz nah, it's not as tight with its controls and you basically cruise rather than have your instincts turned to 11 to work your way through the courses
Episode 1: Racer was so good on the Dreamcast
It is possible to play online?
Pretty much only good thing to come out from last last six episodes of Star Wars. Pod Racing movie scene and this game. I only wished that they would have made bigger graphical updates to this rerelease.
I saw this pod-racer clone on the Switch but forgot its name. It could, minus the nostalgia, actually be the better game.
Your Domb The Prequels Are Awesome 👊
is this game new? cause it looks like a ps2-ps3 version at best.
Dang, I had this on my Hot Wheels Windows 98 😂😂 it was good on all platforms
