A great tip is do not rent the car for a few days and then pay parking fees...you can rent the car daily pick it up in the morning and return it in the evening if you leave at 7-8am and return it at 6-7pm and you save 40$ parking fee.. you can always rent it again tomorrow morning (make sure you are doing multiple reservations 1 for each day you want to rent the car) this can save you hundreds on parking fees...

I just returned from Hawaii and found the cost of food and things in general so expensive. I was practically eating one meal a day which I split the portion for lunch and dinner.

Oahu is beautiful. First visited in 2016 with family and had a great time. I did notice that walking during the day one or two streets off the beach front that there was homeless people:( Can't imagine how the insanity of the last few years helped people's financial situation. I'm heading off to Oahu again soon. Wished I could stay longer and see Kauia and Maui. Another time definitely
@@lachlanbrown409 for sure Oahu is very beautiful filled with kind people. One of the best places in the world for me. The only place I’ll ever call home. The fees!! Saw a "deal" for $1990 for 10 days. Once I added those fees, NOT including daily parking, it turned to $2761, then parking on top! Stayed at Marriott last Feb,$45 daily parking, we stayed 3+ weeks, sometimes couldn't find a spot! The resort fees were a joke. We only slept there. Aloha stadium flea is great. Found my beach hat. My husband lived there in the 70's. His mom said if they didn't have it then you didn't need it. Staying at the North Shore this Feb. We put 1600+ miles on our rental car last time. We found awesome beaches that never had more than 3 other groups. Waikiki Beach was a big disappointment. Ate at Romys shrimp just about every day, will again! All local places other times. We come to hike, swim and eat. Looking forward to our trip this Feb. ❤
Thanks for your insights. My husband and I are booked at the Marriott next week. I saw the $45 daily parking fee and decided to start doing some research which is why I am here reading comments. I"m thinking we should skip the car rental and try to get around on public transportation once we get to the hotel. How was the hotel itself? Frankly, we're lazy tourists. We will do some exploring but mostly hang out by the pool or the beach near the hotel.
BEWARE of coconut vendor at the Aloha Stadium swap meet. Make sure his prices are posted unless you want to pay for a $16 coconut as he hands them to you.
Great content.🥰 Lived in Hawaii (Oahu) about 14 years. Anyway, way back in the mid 1990’s, we were on a family trip n one of my fam members n I were a victim of a SCAM. A guy was at the airport, gave us a very sad convincing story that he had a personal crisis, we felt really sry for him, we collected enough $$$ to pay for his one-way flight from one of the outer islands back to Honolulu n the airline ticket agent informed us that it was a huge SCAM. The others in our fam who refused to donate to him, laughed at us. I’ll NEVER forget how these evil people target kind, compassionate n vulnerable people to give up their hard earned $$$. Anyway, a major lesson learned, I very rarely give $$$ anymore as a result mostly bcuz rarely carry cash these days. Btw, I like the tip about that Surf hotel that has FREE parking n FREE coffee. Back in the day when I was married to a military guy, we almost always stayed at Hale Koa hotel (or at one of his relatives houses). Ty for sharing.🥰 Enjoyed it.💕
Udon noodle line is long but moves fast. Fun to experience for first timers to see them make it in front of you.... The Laylow is bomb! The best shashito peppers! Great service. Props to the chef there!.... Thanks for the tips, we just came back from there. Will use these for next time! Bus looks like a great option to save... Our turo was pretty cheap I must say tho
A lot of this is pretty universal - rental cars get broken into everywhere, popular beaches always have eagle-eyed opportunists looking to snag things (remember the days of expensive film cameras?) and hotels will always stack on the fees if they can. Good point about Hawaii tap water though - after living on the mainland for so long, I sure miss it.
If you’re going to rent a car make sure all the tags are up to date the smaller companies especially personal rentals like TURO will rent you cars that don’t have up to date registration tags. (It’s illegal to drive with expired tags and you might get pulled over and ticketed)
I was staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village just a few months ago and the parking fees and resort fees is where I huge chunk of my money went. I will never stay at that place again.
If you're a tourist, just stay in Waikiki, you'll get the full authentic Hawaiian traditional experience. If not then come by my house at hakimo road waienae, we give good authentic Hawaiian experience too.
This is a very useful video. I suggest for lunch give rainbow Drivein a try. Great and big plate lunches. Also loco moko. For dinner out, walk up Kipahulu. There are lots of places to eat on that street. We are seniors so first day we take the bus out to the depot, buy a senior bus pass ($10 for 3 years) then we buy a sticker for the month we are there-another $5 and that is our transportation for our stay.
IMO This video should’ve just been titled.. “Don’t come to hawaii on a budget” Lot of contradicting info on here. But then again what do I know I’m just a Born and raised Honolulu city boy working in the hospitality industry..
Been to Waikiki many times. Rent car one day at a time. Pick up morning, return at night. Public bus best for nearby areas, and even to visit Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbor and the stadium swap meet for souvenirs etc. U can talk to locals on the bus etc. Be respectful and if you are a guy and bus full allow any standing women to sit if you see that. Is expensive in Waikiki to buy things but if you don’t care then it’s a convenience thing so pay then. I recommend going in the off season less crowds and calmer feel even in Waikiki. Mahalo.
Almost all beaches in Hawaii are public land. The exceptions are the ones on Military Bases. Specifically Bellows past the ID post and White Plains. And White Planes is only military for the rental equipment like surfboards and stuff, but the beach is public. The rest are on a base so you need base access to get to them. So if possible, just bring your own stuff vice paying for rentals. Also, Aulani will try to tell you that you can’t put chairs and umbrellas up at the Lagoons, which is false. Again, they don’t own the beach so you can bring them.
partially true. the land owner owns up to the rocks. before ko'olina was built, those lagoons were not there. technically from the road to the rocks are private property. you can be kicked off the beach. if the security tells something, well they have the power to call HPD and have you removed from the property. the rocks and ocean is public. they have no poweronce your on the rocks. people need to be educated with facts. ko'olina is one of very few exceptions where the land is private and state, city & county and federal dont own the beach. the "lifeguards" when they are on duty are paid by the property owner. please if you don't know, don't speak.
@@yea_i_podagee_so_what I don't think that part about the lagoons is true; it has nothing to do with the rocks its with the water itself. The law states : The public has a right of access along the beaches and shorelines in the State situated below the “upper reaches of the wash of the waves.” depending on time of year/surf/tide the lagoons do develop waves, and are therefor are represented under HRS §§ 115-4, 115-5, Revised.
@@FpSNet yes but the lagoon is not part of that. the high water mark is at the rocks. I've had a DLNR officer tell me that its all gonna come down to what ever agency responds to a complaint tho. but i can guarantee you that if you tried to fish or spearfish in the lagoon, you will be cited. ive seen it numerous times 🤣 i was almost cited for using the lagoon "opening" to enter the water with a speargun but when i showed video of my speargun being unloaded and a protective cap on the tip of the shaft i was not cited.
Raised in Waikiki in the late 60’s Only two hotels the Moana and the Royal Hawaiian. You could park anywhere and walk anywhere. It was called the Waikiki Jungle at the time. No lines to eat. The Royal Hawaiian Snack shop and Minute Chef were popular restaurants and the prices were reasonable. I might be old, but we had it soooo good back then. . .25 cent cheeseburgers too! LOL!
The "jungle" was the area between Kalakaua and the Ala Wai, where locals lived, often who'd been there forever or who worked in the hotels etc. Lots of 1-3 story housing and well, kind of jungle-y.
@@alexcarter8807 yes it was jungly. Lol! We lived in the Islander Cottages As you say lived and breathed and surfed Waikiki day in and day out. Used to cut classes to surf. Those were the days!
Jaycation there is also the Kona St car tow away rip off for parking. There are a number of clubs and bars in the area, such as Jazz Minds, and as you said parking can be expense or hard to find. If you park on Kona street and use the parking meter. Know 100% of the time if the meter expires there are tow trucks waiting that will immediately tow your car. Kona street is privately owned by Ala moana hotel and the towing companies have arrangements with them to tow any vehicle that has a expired meter 24/7. You will not get a parking ticket, you will get towed at a cost of about $250 plus cab fare out by the airport. Tourist get towed by the dozen on busy and late nights.
I went to marukame udon and got the teriyaki chicken noodles 10/10 and the lines don't take as long as you think maybe 10-15 mins, paia fish market across the street on the other had we had to wait 30- 40 minutes standing
All of the hotels listed on priceline, expedia, kayak, etc advertise rates of under $100 a night, but it's never true. If you book through them and you get to the pay screen, you will see SOME of the extra fees they add. It could easily be $60-150 extra a night. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL: After you book it and pay in advance on your credit card. They will hit you with ANOTHER fee when you check in: Maybe $80/a night. My $55 a night rate at a cheap ass hotel turned into almost $800 for 3 nights. Solution? Stay at a hotel that doesn't have resort fees. They are out there, but they won't be cheap. They'll probably be the same price as the rooms that charge all those extra fees. Sure it comes out to about the same, but at least the room is nicer.
As a Kanaka Maoli. I know these things happen. But if you keep aware of yourself, then you should be just fine. Mine your manners. As far as telling them were to go, just remember things change, so it's NOT always the same. And as far as stairway to heaven go the right way residents DON'T want tourists coming through their yards. I hope they start securing their property and get a CCW license. All trass passers will get punished. Mahalo lui loa....
Minute 11:27 shows a parking pay station. The machine's lettering is all in Hebrew(!) so I wonder where that actually is, I'd be very surprised if in Honolulu. I found it amusing as I will be making the VERY long trek over from Israel to Oahu and Maui in one month's time. First visit and really can't wait. I'll be using The Bus and my two feet to get around! Thanks! I am getting a good feel for the city through videos.
I can’t imagine why it’s in Hebrew unless the machine was imported. I have some Jewish ancestry but there is not a large Jewish population here. Our bus service on Oahu is great! 11:37
The Hawaii island circle tour is the biggest rip off. All they do is drive you from gift shop to gift shop and are constantly reminding you to tip your guide the whole time. Just rent a car and explore yourself.
If I could afford to rent a Lamborghini, I would be watching this video hahaha Great tips, thanks!! I’m going to Oahu for the first time in 2 weeks. Super excited☺️
When hubby and I go to Hawaii we have a water bag from local motion, put our stuff in it and you can even keep air in it to float on lol obviously make sure there’s no leaks going on before doing that lol
It doesn't involve Waikiki, but SeaLife Park is definetly a tourist trap/scam. Don't go to the park. It has more love birds than the park has "Sea" life.
Hi! I am concerned because of the recent news I have heard.. I am traveling to Waikiki with a friend. I abstain from smoking, drinking, and parties. I am extremely kind and have excellent manners. I just want to relax on the beach with my pal and go food shopping without bothering anyone. How can I avoid offending Hawaiian culture or coming under attack from enraged residents when I visit? I'm sorry if this is insensitive, but the news has worried me and gives the impression that locals are gathering in gangs with machetes and picking targets to murder. I'm now so frightened! 😭 we are girls! We don’t want any trouble with anyone!!!
Skip Waikiki, Just come to the North Shore. Perhaps stay at the new Laie Marriott off of Kamehameha Hwy. It’s located by BYU Hawaii and The Polynesian Cultural Center. The whole town is owned by very wholesome Mormons. No liquor or cigarettes are sold at the Laie Foodland. There’s lots to do here in the country. 🤙🏽
I actually didn't see any scams or rip offs. It's the same exact thing in San Diego. If you stay in downtown at a hotel, $30 and over for parking a night or more. Coronado is also a man made beach but people love going there. Im watching your new surfjack hotel video. Good one. Like your channel👍
My wife and I were eating in a well known burger place on the main strip, when it came to pay the bill the waiter decided to cross out the two lower tips expecting to be payed the higher one, suffice to say he didn't get any. PS. We've had 4 graet holidays in Waikiki, it's got to be good for the 19 hr flight from the UK.
Side note, if you like go swap meet... Don't get ripped off like me if you like try some fresh island fruit... If the vendor doesn't get da price listed, always ask da cost! One time I just walked up and asked the vendor for two coconuts to drink for me and my daughter... I'm thinking to myself da price should be around $20 for two... He went crack da coconuts, put da straw in, and told me "that'll be $42!" So I had to take that L... Meanwhile, right around da corner, had one other vendor wit bigger, and fresher coconuts only going for $7 each! This went happen 2yrs ago, and I still get pissed to dis day... 😩🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
My biggest complaint about Waikiki is the Back alley 'souvenir' shops -- these are mostly trinkets and crafts (craaap) from Asia and not NOT locally make goods. Second, most of these vendors are Asian (not that I have a problem with that), but they are often rude and pushy as heck... Stay Away from them. As far as the Waikiki beach, honestly, I loved it when I was there; I have no issues with it. Beware that some other beaches are fine, but the water is often overcrowded with 'Locals'--locals that often do not like sharing lineup space--often resulting in violent encounters & fights in some cases. I personally love Hanauma Bay; it is one of the best places to snorkel in O'ahu that is not crowded by 'locals' and where you can swim alongside fish and turtles... this is always my go-to place. As for taxis; honestly, the trolly is fine, but walking is not a problem between Ala Moana Park & Mall to downtown Waikiki; it is excellent exercise... I highly encourage it. And lastly, as for restaurants, this is a crap-shoot... lots of restaurants but lousy food. In the last three times I visited Waikiki, I hated the food, except for Rainbow Drive-in. Though, my wife didn't care for Rainbow Drive-in as much as I did. I cannot explain why the food at well-known chain restaurants are so lousy in Hawaii, but there is something really wrong with them.
That goes back .... forever. Those big conch shells they like to blow on like a trumpet? Those are from the ATLANTIC ocean! Living on the windward side as a teen, I used to earn some money stringing necklaces from shells and stuff imported from/through the Philippines, then sticking a "MADE IN HAWAII" sticker on 'em. This was in the 1970s and it was well-entrenched practice by then.
Aloha I think the food at restaurants are so crappy because they hire anyone nowadays most of the cooks are there just to work and get it over with so the food taste like crap but idk that's just my opinion

But the crime has gone up so much here, it’s ridiculous. I hope you enjoy your visit here and have a wonderful stay. But please be careful for thieves and what not if you stay in Waikiki. Time time has been crazy on Waikiki. Just stay safe and have a good time
Jeez.. I was thinking of doing public parking from the hotel that's 3 blocks away with my toddler, but forget this.. I'll do valet instead..
So happy that I stumbled upon your channel! Thank you for all of the super helpful info. It's been ages since I've been to Oahu and I needed a few reminders for my upcoming trip. 😄
mahalo! I actually have a res for Surfjack so good to know you stayed there! And yes, Aloha Swap Meet is the best... I go every trip!
Thank you for the cool tour, gonna add some of your suggestions to my next visit!!!
as a resident here I can validate that these are all valid concerns and good tips. good work
Surfjack was an awesome hotel! Loved the bungalow 2 room style.
When I lived at Pearl Harbor, I very seldom went to Waikiki beach. My "beach" was Bellows Field.
Very helpful video. Going to watch all the hawaii stuff. Going very very soon.
Ty for sharing.🥰 Enjoyed it.💕
Your videos are super helpful. Can u please do big island next
The line in Murakame Udon is long but goes quickly. We probably were just on the line for less than 30 minutes.
I'm from Memphis, I don't trust anybody!! Thanks for the tips
Shout out to Memphis!
Great video and tips the hotel fees trick is astonishing thanks for sharing
I was staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village just a few months ago and the parking fees and resort fees is where I huge chunk of my money went. I will never stay at that place again.
If you're a tourist, just stay in Waikiki, you'll get the full authentic Hawaiian traditional experience. If not then come by my house at hakimo road waienae, we give good authentic Hawaiian experience too.
Save your ABC store receipts and turn them in before your vacation ends for free gifts!!!
Always wondered where do you turn them in? At the airport or an actual ABC store?
@@Jaycation at any store. at the register. Best Sandwiches in HNL at ABC store... !!!
I loved rainbow drive-in! I went back in 2016.. i need to go back love their locomoco
I'm moving to HawIi in a few months... Thank you for the tips to watch out for.
MAHALO for the AMAZING tips!!!
ALOHA!!!🌺🌴😎🍍🏖️
IMO This video should’ve just been titled..
“Don’t come to hawaii on a budget”
Lot of contradicting info on here.
Mahalo.
Amanda and Felix = 🐐
Good collab with Felix! I'm glad car rental prices are going down .It sounds like you got a good price with Hotwire.
Yeah i was actually surprised to find that deal and i got it literally a week out
Is there somewhere I can get info on hotels with the least amount of fees?
We loved the Surfjack! Great rec! Wish we could have stayed longer.
Amanda and Felix are the best. Love their cheap eats videos.
Eat like a local! So yummy!
Good job Jay. Nice to see you collaborating with Felix on an information based video. A lot of good tips for newbies to Hawai'i.
Thanks Don! It was fun filming with Felix. U know i love doing informational vids like this!
Again, they don’t own the beach so you can bring them.
yeah u can totally post up for the day at Aulani. They definitely cant kick u out unless youre not a guest at the pool
partially true. the land owner owns up to the rocks. before ko'olina was built, those lagoons were not there. technically from the road to the rocks are private property. you can be kicked off the beach. if the security tells something, well they have the power to call HPD and have you removed from the property. the rocks and ocean is public. they have no poweronce your on the rocks. people need to be educated with facts. ko'olina is one of very few exceptions where the land is private and state, city & county and federal dont own the beach. the "lifeguards" when they are on duty are paid by the property owner. please if you don't know, don't speak.
Those public busses are so flippin' cold.
Sometimes, Always bring a sweater. It’s best to sit in the back seat over the engine. It usually stays warm there.
Raised in Waikiki in the late 60’s
Only two hotels the Moana and the Royal Hawaiian.
LOL!
wow you had it great back in the 60s! if only prices and inflation didnt increase haha
The "jungle" was the area between Kalakaua and the Ala Wai, where locals lived, often who'd been there forever or who worked in the hotels etc. Lots of 1-3 story housing and well, kind of jungle-y.
@@alexcarter8807 yes it was jungly. Lol!
We lived in the Islander Cottages
As you say lived and breathed and surfed Waikiki day in and day out. Used to cut classes to surf. Those were the days!
Cockaroaches everywhere.. especially when you come home at night from work and turn on the lights
@@Kwedeekhapo LMAO! Totally accurate! Yep! I would scream at the sight of them. B-52’s! 😖😂
My husband and I are traveling to Hawaii next September. Is there any information for first time traveler it would be appreciated, thanks
"when you give me your ocean eyes" 😅 nice taste in music
I went to marukame udon and got the teriyaki chicken noodles 10/10 and the lines don't take as long as you think maybe 10-15 mins, paia fish market across the street on the other had we had to wait 30- 40 minutes standing
Very informative. Thanks……👍🏽
Those fees, make Vegas casinos look like a hostel.
Lol thats almost over $200 in fees. CRAZY!
The cars also Israeli
I can’t wait go back yesterday I was there I love Hawaii but it so freaking expensive
The Hawaii island circle tour is the biggest rip off. All they do is drive you from gift shop to gift shop and are constantly reminding you to tip your guide the whole time. Just rent a car and explore yourself.
Thanks for all info I just came across your site very helpful
If I could afford to rent a Lamborghini, I would be watching this video hahaha Great tips, thanks!! I’m going to Oahu for the first time in 2 weeks. Super excited☺️
My girlfriend and I are coming in a couple of weeks we would like to do a luau what Is the best luau to attend
I hear Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie is good.
When hubby and I go to Hawaii we have a water bag from local motion, put our stuff in it and you can even keep air in it to float on lol obviously make sure there’s no leaks going on before doing that lol
I like your San Diego Padre gear! Like Amanda and Felix Eats too!
The swap meet reminds me of the international market back when there was still red lion and Mr magoos pizza in the late 70s early 80s
So sad, lived and worked in Waikiki from 81-95. Didn’t have any scams back then, more Aloha less concrete. Mahalo.

Bus in Oahu is a great deal sometimes you gotta wait awhile but the bus that loops you around the island is great
They yell about luggage.
Why didn't you mention hui when talking about rental cars?
7:41 (Da) bus system is amazing, nothing like it anywhere on the mainland US. They do stop quite a bit though but so much better than Ubering around.
With Res Hill, I wouldn’t trust the water right now.
It doesn't involve Waikiki, but SeaLife Park is definetly a tourist trap/scam. Don't go to the park. It has more love birds than the park has "Sea" life.
isn't the water polluted by jet fuel?
Luv the SD Padre shirt. Let’s go! 🤙🤙
Right. Our sand is pumped to the shore also!! Big deal and at least the water in Waikiki is nice.
1:09 *Tahiti (according to a local)
4:27 Hilton is my go as they have free Wi-Fi for diamond members
Those mentioned are not really scams. They're unreasonable charges and basic safety features that everyone should be aware of.
Awesome video with great tips!! They didn’t even have cars at all to rent for a while so good to know you can get one now.
Thanks! Looks like the cars r back for rent… haha
Waikiki was my home for ten years.
What’s the app for island vintage coffee? I couldn’t find it.
Not an app just through their website
Nice collab! Now I know what to watch for next time I’m in Oahu!
You’ll like my next vid! Haha
Parking in Hawaii is a lot like parking in New Orleans. I paid $45/day when I went for Mardi Gras pre-pandemic in the French Quarter.
No need to rent a car in New Orleans. You can walk everywhere
@@JohnSmith-dm1wo You can take public transportation in both places but I a;ways drive to NO and need to park somewhere.
I’m not going to lie everything your saying I did the bus saves so much money and you can literally visit all hawai in a bus👍
thats what people been saying... the bus is a money saver!
This video tells me I never wanna go to Hawaii to have a downtown experience
